The Masked prince -
Chapter 120: The Past(1)
Chapter 120: The Past(1)
Evelyn was standing in the silent chambers near Elias.
She could feel Rex’s eyes on her and she knew that the prince was expecting answers to his question ...the answers that Regan had helped her to avoid.
But Rex was persistent.
"We need to investigate Arthur."
Regan said suddenly and looked at Elias.
Elias understood and nodded his head. But before he could say that it will be done to his master, Rex spoke up.
"You won’t find anything. My people didn’t find anything about him except that he had been a very good friend of Prince William and he had a wife."
Rex’s eyes again went to Evelyn when he said the last few words.
"Don’t say that, Rex."
Regan said coldly but Rex raised his eyebrows as he countered.
"But that’s the truth. You can’t deny that, Regan. Can we, Evelyn?"
In the end, Rex turned the matter to Evelyn again.
Evelyn’s body was very stiff. Her hands were clutching her dress very tightly. A moment later, she raised her head and said to Rex.
"Yes, we can’t, Your Highness. I had been married, yes. But I would not call myself Arthur’s wife."
Evelyn paused as she lowered her head again.
She had never shared that part of her life with anyone. Even her conscious tried to remember it as less as it could.
So was she ready to go down that lane of memory?
If one would ask Evelyn, what had been the most horrible part of her life, she would never say that it was after she became a slave.
No, it was before she was a slave.
That was the most horrible part of her life.
"What do you mean to say, Evelyn?"
Rex asked Evelyn. It was a good thing that she was speaking about her past because he needed to know as much as he could.
Even Regan was looking at Evelyn in confusion. He couldn’t understand what she exactly meant.
A part of his heart urged him to stop her because she looked unwilling to speak but then another part of his heart said that he shouldn’t stop her.
The girl in front of him looked too petite but she seemed to hold so much in her inside that it was perhaps not possible for a human being.
So should he let her speak today?
Just when Regan was trying to sort out his own conflicting thoughts, he heard Evelyn say.
"I was married, Your Highness but not to Arthur. I was married to his brother who is already dead. I am his brother’s widow. As for why Arthur is behind me and how I got married to his brother, it is a very long story."
Evelyn’s eyes shone with fresh tears and the memories of the past flashed in front of her eyes.
Today, she was to relive her past again.
.
.
(Sixteen Years Ago)
Behind the small hills, a very small tribal village was there in Zamorin.
In the past, the tribe people rarely interacted with the people of other villages and towns. However, in the recent past, the population of the tribe had been growing less and less.
As the people of the tribe had started to go to villages and towns in search of livelihood, they returned rarely.
Hence, now there were not many families in this tribe.
Inside this tribal village, the largest hut belonged to the head of the tribe. At this moment, outside the large hut, children were playing with each other.
From the door of the hut, a pair of green eyes peeked and looked at the children with hope-filled eyes.
However, only a few moments had passed, when the girl heard a shout.
"Evelyn! Where is this dead girl? Evelyn!"
The girl jumped at the sudden shout and hurriedly ran inside.
A middle-aged woman was seated on a cot and she glared at Evelyn as soon as the latter stepped inside.
"Where were you dilly-dallying? You are yet to clean the dishes."
Evelyn was afraid to see her aunt’s anger and said immediately in her childish voice.
"I will do it now, Aunt."
The middle-aged woman was the wife of the head of the tribe. Looking at Evelyn’s innocent face, she humphed coldly and no longer said anything as she lay down on the cot.
Evelyn immediately went to the kitchen to do the dishes.
She was still only five and her hands were small. It was difficult for her to hold big utensils but she had to do it. A few days ago, she had broken a glass and her Aunt had not given her dinner.
After that night, she would try to be extra careful because the feeling of staying hungry was very difficult to bear.
As she washed the dishes, she heard the children’s shouts from outside. Her eyes couldn’t help but flash with slight sorrow.
She also wanted to go out and play like her Aunt’s children but she knew that if she did that then she would be beaten by her Aunt.
Evelyn’s eyes unconsciously filled up with tears but she blinked them up furiously when she suddenly heard a knock on the door.
"Is there someone inside?"
Knowing that her Aunt was asleep, Evelyn put aside the dishes and walked to the door.
She saw a man and woman standing there.
"My uncle is not at home."
Evelyn said innocently as she thought that the couple was here to find his uncle. The woman smiled when she looked at Evelyn and asked
"Are you Evelyn?"
Evelyn’s eyes went wide when she realized that the big woman knew her name. But she didn’t know this woman.
She tried to remember hard but she couldn’t recall if she had seen this woman.
The woman who was still standing at the door stepped inside and approached Evelyn.
"You must be. Your eyes are just like hers."
The woman whispered and suddenly bent down to pick Evelyn up in her arms.
Evelyn’s eyes went wide slightly but she felt shy. No one had ever picked her like this as far as she could remember.
Looking at Evelyn’s confused face, she smiled and asked
"We have met before but you might not remember. After all, you were just one year old. Where is your Mother?"
