Chapter 238: 237. Goddess of Life (2)

The three Priests seemed a bit taken aback before the High Priest cleared his throat.

"Then, can you explain why she was with Sir Asher of the Templar Knights?"

I chuckled, "You don’t know?"

Benedict’s lips thinned and I added, "I may not be travelling with her physically but I knew about every place she went to and also of the people she came across... including those who attacked her and tried to kidnap her."

I saw Benedict shiver ever so slightly as I fixed my icy glare on him. The Temple was the one who had attacked me at the time when Asher saved me and it was according to their plan that I was being taken by the Captain of the Templar knights but since there was an unexpected kidnapping attempt on the Saint these guys had sidetracked me for a while. After that, when they managed to subside the issue they must have asked for me but since Asher denied and took me away they must have made a deal with Lyall in bringing me to the Temple.

"So, you knew about the Saintess already?" The large man asked.

"I did, I was the one who had suggested her to travel in the first place." I said making them look at me with surprised expressions.

"Pardon? Why?"

"Her potential would have been wasted by sitting at home." I shrugged my shoulders.

"Besides, it wouldn’t be good for my fiance tonot be of any use to me now, would it?" I asked making them gasp.

"Pa-Pardon? Your fiance?" Benedict asked.

"Yes, she’s my fiance and she shall be treated with due respect here as a Goddess." I announced making them exchange a glance.

"Why are you sending your fiance to the Temple?"

I tilted my head, "For the support of your Temple."

"But, you have already taken over the underworld so, why do you want the Temple’s support?"

"You know each coin has two sides, and I’m a businessman. I need both the sides in my control to achieve what I want."

The Priests seemed a bit wary now, even a greedy person had some sort of instinct.

"But you don’t need to worry, my power is your power. You can get profits from indulging in the Underworld business like you do by selling the children from your orphanges as slaves."

The two Priests stiffened and Benedict seemed to be pondering a bit over my words.

"I can even open routes for exchange of selling the humans in exchange for the other species."

This made his eyes shine and I knew I was starting to get him.

"Like I said, your Holy Nation seems profitable to me as well so, I’ll help from my side so that you would get rid of the meagre power that those nobles have left. In exchange, you will have to do as I say."

"Sounds quite profitable for us as well." The pudgy man said with a grin.

"I agree, if it’s our support then we shall be happy to indulge you," the large man said before they looked at the High Priest.

"What do you say, High Priest?" I asked and he kept observing me.

"I... shall take your words into consideration after I see just how strong your Goddess is," he said and I smirked.

"Do you even have that many injured people to see her potential?"

"That’s our problem." He said and I could already see that he would do something heinous for that.

"Anything else?" I asked.

"Donations?"

I chuckled, "All right, I’ll send you a good amount. But in exchange, my girl should have good facilities here. Am I clear?"

"Yes, yes! We’ll take good care of her!"

"She won’t face any problems!"

The pudgy priest and the large one excitedly promised me and I smiled.

"Good to know,"

The meeting didn’t last for long after that but I did mention that I would keep an eye on them unless they tried to do something to my girl.

"Ah, right." I suddenly recalled the other thing that I needed to confirm.

"You might have some idea as of where Sir Asher is, right?" I asked.

"Why do you presume that we might know of him?" Benedict asked.

"Your ways aren’t that secretive for me," I smirked making the High Priest sigh.

"He tried to take my fiance so, I do have some things to settle with him." I said making the High Priest ponder over it.

"All right,"

He stood up and I followed suit. I knew that if my people didn’t find him anywhere else then he must have come here.

The High Priest stepped out of the prayer room and I gave a final glance to the statue in that room before we made our way down the corridor deeper into the Temple. He stopped and turned into another corridor which unlike the other hallyways seemed a bit different. At the end of it was a thick wooden door, he led us right through the door down the dark staircase.

I could make out what this place was but I didn’t know that the Temple had such a place though, I was not surprised to find an underground dungeon below this Temple.

At the base of the staircase, there was a split into tha path. One path led to another door while other led to the dark corridor filled with the depressing sounds of wails and sobs.

Benedict turned towards the dark corridor and I gestured at the door behind us.

"What’s behind that door?" I asked.

Benedict stopped and turned. His eyes lingered on the door behind me for a moment before he shook his head.

"You don’t need to know, Lord Ace." He said and I tilted my head.

I used Mana Eyes to look but something seemed to be blocking my vision. I couldn’t see past that door and it slightly irked me but I didn’t say anything as I kept walking behind the Priests.

The familiar stench of rotting flesh, excretion and blood clogged my nostrils and I tried not to gag. Among all the scents I caught the trail of a familiar scent, Asher’s blood.

I followed behind the High Priest and saw as the prisoners reached out from behind the bars begging for them to be released.

"Who are these people?" I asked.

"Those who opposed the church."

"Don’t you all burn them at the stake or something?" I asked as I recalled the bloody history from my past life.

"We do, but that’s only for those who need to be silenced at once. These are already broken." Benedict said coldly and I hummed.

I gazed at the poor people who seemed like they were on the verge of death, badly malnourished and already starting to rot while still being alive. The most horrible kind of death a person could have.

I could save them right now but that would hinder my plan.

The High Priest stopped in front of a cell which was at the end. I saw a familiar pale headed man in there crouched on the ground with the thick shackles binding him down.

"Here he is," Benedict said and I stepped ahead.

"I need to talk to him, open the door." I ordered.

Benedict looked at the pudgy man and gave him a nod before the pudgy priest stepped ahead and pulled out a band of keys from his robe’s pockets and fiddled with the keys.

He opened the cell door and I looked at the three.

"Are you going to join me?"

The three looked a bit confused and I added, "I need to talk to him on private please leave us alone for some time."

"Be careful though... Even if he is shackled, he is strong."

"Don’t worry, he won’t be able to do anything. I just need to meet the man who tried to seduce my fiance, that’s all."

Asher stirred a little and I saw his head moving. The priests nodded in understanding.

"We shall wait for you near the staircase then, here is the key, please lock it and return there." Benedict said before he handed Lyall the key to Asher’s cell.

I was a bit surprised as he was handing the key of Asher’s cell so easily but then again, he might be thinking that I might just be the person to do something worse to Asher for laying his hands on my girl. It sounded a bit silly in my mind.

I stepped inside the cell and heard the low growl coming from Asher, he was crouching but I could see he was more like an injured animal waiting for a moment to attack.

"Asher Lewinstein." I spoke up before I crouched in front of him to get on his eye level.

He lifted his head and his sharp blue eyes glared at me, I could see the dried blood forming a thick mesh at his temples and the sides of his face. Even his golden hair was stained with the dried blood.

"They’ve really done a number on you, huh." I said as I observed him.

"Where is Miss Mirielle?" He asked.

"She’s safe."

"Where is she?" He repeated and I sighed.

"With me."

"Are you really her fiance?" I could see the ire in his eyes. He really was in love with me aka Mirielle.

"She and I... are a bit more closer than that,"

Asher’s grimace grew even menacing and I was just wondering when he would lash out on me.

"Why are you here? Are you planning on bring her to the Temple?"

I smirked, "Bring her to the Temple? She’s already here."

Asher’s face turned paler, if that was even possible.

"What?"

"Yes, she’s already here and doing what she is supposed to do."
