Chapter 217: 216. Templar Knights (1)
A couple of days passed by and we reached in a considerably larger township where there was a better church.
The plague wasn’t that severe here, there were only a few who were infected. As I travelled further inside the territory the numbers of the infected dwindled and the air was also cleaner.
"Our speed is better than the infection but there might still be some villages which need help." I mused as we were riding the carriage.
"Master?" Lyall spoke up and I hummed.
I knew what he wanted to tell me, I could already sense them creeping closer.
"I understand, I’ll stay in here but don’t kill them let me see how far they can go." I instructed.
He looked back at me for a moment before he nodded with thinly pressed lips.
"I understand, Master."
I sat in my place pretending to be perturbed and scared after Lyall had jumped off the carriage and started fighting the ones who had now attacked us.
I waited for a couple of minutes before I felt the carriage jolt and the door was almost ripped open before I saw a man draped in black.
"Who-Who are you?" I gasped feigning being terrified and the man reached out grabbing my wrist.
"Wait! Stop! I’m a healer!" I shouted.
"Hurry and grab the girl! We need to leave!" Someone shouted.
I yelped as he dragged me out and I tried to struggled but he wrapped a cloth to cover my mouth and tied my wrists. He threw me over his shoulder, I struggled weakly making sure to hold my strength back to a significant level.
"I got the girl! Let’s go!"
Lyall’s eyes widened as he saw me but I gestured him to not overdo it as the men slashed at him. He stumbled back and pretended to be seriously injured as the men rushed towards the treeline.
One of the men tossed me over the horseback before he got on.
"Hurry! We need to get out of here soon!"
I flailed trying to free myself but we were already moving. I knew Lyall would be following behind us quietly so, I was simply pretending to do my part.
I waited for a while before I heard the sound of something exploding around us. The smoke engulfed us driving the horses disoriented and my kidnappers panicked.
"Who the hell is it?"
"Protect the girl!"
The sounds of fights started and the horse which had me suddenly jolted neighing loudly making me and the man on it fall to the ground. He gripped my arm kept me behind him as he brandished his sword looking around trying to see if he could see anything in the thick smoke.
I wondered who these new guys were that had suddenly appeared, to be honest, I didn’t even know who the previous guys were.
Suddenly the man in front of me wheezed and slumped to the ground. I looked up to see a tall man standing in front of me clad in a silver white armor, holding a long sword with the crest of the Temple. The shield which had the figure of a praying Saintess and a Dragon flying close to her.
A Templar knight.
I flinched as he reached out towards me and he stopped.
"Please don’t be afraid," he spoke rather softly and I looked at him.
To increase the effect, I even had tears streaming down my face, the knight slowly undid his headgear and exposed his face. His curly blonde hair tumbled over his smooth, fair forehead and his clear blue eyes met mine. He seemed like he would be in his mid-twenties.
"I’m a Templar knight from the Order of Saintess Miella Temple. Please don’t be afraid, we are here to protect you." He said as he gently reached out to me.
I sniffed and took his hand. Finally, the temple’s idiots were here.
The smoke dispersed and I saw a handful of more knights who faced me while my earlier kidnappers were on the ground, dead. The knight cut the ropes that bound my wrists and then removed the cloth over my mouth gently.
"M-My knight! They hurt my knight!" I stammered.
"Please don’t worry-"
"My Lady!" I turned to see Lyall rushing towards me.
The knights grabbed Lyall before he could reach me and I hurriedly walked up to him.
"Wait, that’s my knight!"
The knights looked at me before he looked at Lyall who huffed, I placed my hand on his shoulder as he leaned over to me.
"A-Are you all right, Ma-My Lady?" Lyall asked me and I nodded.
"Yes, but you-" I gasped as I saw his arm bleeding.
"I’m fine, My Lady." He said and I shook my head.
"I’m sorry," I genuinely said. He was far more skilled than those kidnappers and there was no way that he would be hurt because of them but since I had asked him to not show off his skills he ended up getting hurt.
"I’m really fine, Ma-My Lady."
I closed my eyes and activated the healing spell curing the gash on his arm.
"M-My Lady!" He gasped and simultaneously, I heard more gasps from around us.
I opened my eyes and looked at his arm which had completely healed.
"You didn’t have to do this, My Lady!" Lyall said and I shook my head.
"I can’t let you be hurt."
I guess staying with me had its effect on Lyall too since he also was now better at acting except for him mistakenly calling me "Master". Still, it was fun to act like this to fool others.
"My Lady! You’re-"
I turned around to see the blonde knight along with others staring at me with wide eyes.
"A healer!"
"That... Well..." I and Lyall exchanged glances before the Templar knights nodded at each other and the one who had saved me earlier reached out to me again.
"Please come with us, Miss. We are here for you."
"For me?"
"Yes, we were ordered by His Holiness, the Pope to bring you to the Temple safely and I’m glad we were on time." He said and bowed along with the other knights.
I gasped and Lyall looked at me as if wondering what he should do next.
"I-I’m Mirielle Clarkson and this is my knight Zoro." I said gesturing towards myself and Lyall.
"I am Asher Lewinstein. The captain of the Templar knights of the Temple of Saintess Miella and the Dragons." The blonde man introduced himself with a smile and I was almost surprised to see that the Captain of the knights himself was sent to fetch me.
I acted like an innocent lady as I gave him my hand and Lyall who seemed a little displeased said nothing but followed us. There were horses close by and Asher stopped before the large white horse before he turned to look at me.
"Please pardon my rudeness, Miss," he said before I gasped as he placed his hands on my waist lifting me off the ground in one sweep.
"What?!" I gasped as he placed me on the horseback.
"We have a long way to go before we reach the carriage so, you will have to ride with me."
"I shall ride with the lady." Lyall spoke up making the knights look at him sharply.
"It’s fine, Zoro. You must be tired too. Besides, they are Templar knights so, it’s safe." I smiled making him falter.
They wouldn’t hesitate in hurting him when I wasn’t around and make up a story in future so, I must make him understand that he shouldn’t involve too much.
"But, My Lady-"
"Please trust us, we understand that you have sworn on oath to protect the Young Miss but since she is identified as a Healer before the Templar knights so, the Temple will protect her from henceforth."
"You-"
"Zoro," I spoke up with a tad bit firmness into it.
"Please... We’ve been through a lot... These knights seem like they will protect us... You don’t have to fight on your own... Please..."
Please understand and don’t be an idiot, Lyall!
His eyes grew hard for a moment before his expression changed and he bowed his head.
"I understand, My Lady. I’ll do as you say."
I smiled brightly at his reply, "Good."
Lyall was riding with another knight while Asher rode with me.
We rode in silence and I could feel the other knights occasionally stealing glances at me but I looked down as I was busy concealing my smirk.
It was happening, the doors to the Temple would be opening for me and I would be able to unveil the secrets that I was tasked to exposed to the world.
[Goddess of Wisdom says that she feels as if she is letting an abominable presence enter a Temple.]
"I’m a Dragon." I corrected, "It’s basically a temple which would worship me. And an abominable presence? Really? Am I that hateful? Aren’t I doing your bidding?"
[Giver of Gifts calls Goddess of Wisdom rude.]
[Defender of Divine Glory corrects it by calling you a sinister presence.]
"Are you competing on who could piss me off better?"
[Giver of Gifts asks you to not pay mind to the rude ones.]
"Only she understands my heart!"
[Goddess of Wisdom wonders if you have a heart.]
[Defender of Divine Glory says that you only have a brain.]
"I’m officially pissed!"
"Are you all right, Miss Mirielle?" I looked up at Asher whose eyebrows twitched.
For a split second, I saw my glowing, sharp blue eyes reflecting in his eyes and I concealed my expression quickly.
"I’m fine, just a little tired." I smiled.
"I-I see..."
We kept riding like that until I found my eyelids dropping and before I knew it I had rested my head against his cool and hard chest plate before I dozed off.
