Chapter 216: 215. Nobles Of Denril (2)
Duke Damon Lancaster was a thirty-four year old man who had gained the title only recently from his father who passed away suddenly.
His father was a strong opponent for the temple and it was said that as long as he was alive the Temple’s folks never had enough power. But as soon as he died the power vacuum created by his absence was quickly filled in by the Temple while his son Damon was left with only half the power that he was supposed to inherit.
That was why he was trying his best to keep the side of the nobles strong by doing all he could.
Damon slowly removed the mask that was covering the lower half of his face revealing a young man with curly brown hair and piercing green eyes with a fair face.
"Who are you exactly?" He asked me looking straight into my eyes and I tilted my head a little, my eyes going sharp.
I saw a slight shudder pass through his body before he lowered his eyes.
"My name doesn’t matter here, Duke. But what matters is how I will be introduced." I spoke making him look at me but not meeting my eyes.
"I will be introduced as the Saintess Mirielle and I will enter the Temple," his eyes widened and jaw clenched but he didn’t say anything.
"My ultimate goal is to destroy the Temple’s image and bring forth their true face, if you play your cards right and do what I say then you will regain the power that you had lost." I said.
"What... will you get out of it?"
I smiled as I answered, "Satisfaction,"
I saw him gulp before he asked, "But why... choose to do this? You’re a Great Dragon so... why not simply go to the Temple and destroy it?"
I smiled as I answered his question, "If I take direct action then Denril might seize to exist along with its citizens."
Damon stiffened and I shook my head, "I am not here to kill anyone unnecessarily, Duke. I have my own agenda here and that is to clear the name of the Dragons and the Saintess whom you worship."
Damon eyed me with a cautious gaze and I stood up from my place making him flinch along with the large man behind him.
"You will have to lay the groundwork by gathering all the nobles under you while I do my part. It might take a little bit time but not more than a couple of months so, till then stand in your power and do as I instruct."
"What else am I supposed to do except for gathering the nobles?" He asked.
"I need all the information about the Saint,"
"About the Saint?"
"Yes, every little thing that you can get and also about the people who are around him, Pope and all."
"I-I thought that the Dragon would be o-omnipotent "
I chuckled as I plucked out a few papers from my vest and walked back to the chair.
"Here," I handed him the papers.
"What... is this?" He asked as he took the papers and looked at the contents.
His eyebrows furrowed a little before he looked at me.
"The list of the moles on your side,"
His eyes widened and he almost rose to his feet.
"What?!"
"I am omnipotent enough to know people’s weaknesses, Duke. These people are making you weak so, weed them out of you need to get stronger."
"B-But..." He seemed sceptical for some reason and I shook my head.
"It’s your choice if you want to do it or not, but if it were your father sitting in your place he might have been smart enough to believe."
His eyes grew sharp as I said that, "Y-You talk as if you knew my father."
"No, I didn’t know him but I know that the men who have lived longer enough are seasoned as well, they know things better than the younger folks who have just stepped into the arena."
His lips grew thin and clutched the papers tightly, I observed him until he released a deep breath and asked me.
"What exactly do you want me to do?"
"Bring the Saint’s image down. Question his legitimacy and then bring my name forth, make it so that they would know you’re trying to create a rift in between the Temple."
He listened carefully before he asked, "And what will it do?"
"It’ll make my work easier."
"Is the Saint fake?" He asked and I shrugged my shoulders.
"You tell me, have you ever met him before?"
He nodded, "A couple of times before, he seemed quite different than the other priests I saw, a normal seeming child... I guess."
"Child?" I cocked my brow and he nodded again.
"Yes,"
"How old is this Saint?"
"12 or 13 perhaps." He said and my blood seemed to simmer under my skin.
I was up against a child who was younger than me here. I let out a surprised chuckle before a full blown laughter spilled from my mouth and I leaned back.
I kept laughing for a good while and shook my head as I realised what my lack of information would have caused.
"Are you sure he’s just a child?" I asked and Damon looked a bit hesitant but he nodded.
"The boy stays at the Temple with the Pope." He said and I sighed.
"Change of plans," I said and his eyebrows jumped.
"Pardon?"
"Just promote me, spread the news about a new Saintess awakening."
"You mean, Saint?" He asked.
"No, Saintess." I corrected.
"But what good will it do? I mean, they must already know of you by now."
I smirked and spoke up, "Damon,"
He flinched as I used his first name without any honorifics. I leaned ahead with my eyes growing sharper and my Presence sizzling around me like looming predator.
"You are failing to acknowledge the situation you’re in."
I smiled this time showing my teeth as I rose from my seat and leaned ahead placing my hands over the handrest of the chair he was sitting on. I glared right into his eyes which quivered and he squirmed back in his seat. I sensed his knight try to move but one glance from me and he became rooted in his spot.
"It is you and your team who need me, keep in mind that in order to gain what you want you have to be smart enough to be quiet and listen when you have to do and act when you’re told to. If you fail, it’s not my problem but it sure will be for you. Because all the hard work you will put, will go to waste and I am not coming for your rescue if you don’t yield results to me."
He gulped and I continued, "I haven’t given you a tough job unlike some others who work for me so, be a good boy,"
I gently patted his cheek keeping the grin, "And do as you’re told to earn the power, do you understand?"
"Ye-Yes," he spoke breathlessly and I stepped back allowing him space to breath.
He inhaled and exhaled loudly as I stood in my spot looking down at him.
"My plan is to only bring forth the true face of the Temple and protect the image of my kin and Saintess. If you cannot do your part well then, erasing your nation would be as easy as this," I snapped my fingers making him flinch and go paler than bone.
"Now that you’ve understood what you have to do, I guess we can call it a night." Damon got to his wobbling feet.
His knight held his shoulders before they moved towards the door.
"Ah, Damon?" He flinched before he turned to look at me,
"Ye-Yee?"
"Tell Fenson that he did a good job." I smiled, "You don’t find such capable men often."
"Yes..." He spoke and I nodded.
"Good night,"
"Yes, good night, L-Lord Dragon."
"Saintess." I corrected.
"Pardon?" He blinked before he understood and nodded.
"Yes, good night, Saintess."
Damon left after that and I turned to Lyall.
"We should head back too,"
We returned back to our rooms and I lay in my bed staring up at the ceiling.
"Why wasn’t I informed that this Saint was a kid?" I mumbled.
[Defender of Divine Glory asks if you will make an exception even if the child is wrong.]
"No, but I need to know who he is first, I don’t harm children and innocents." I spoke.
[Defender of Divine Glory reminds you of what you did with one child.]
"Are you talking about Charlotte?" I asked and then chuckled, "She was a spoiled brat who needed to know how to respect others, especially dead that’s why I taught her a lesson."
Charlotte was the daughter of a noble from Frosthail who had been pestering Davian while taking advantage of his weakened state but now he was fine.
"Come to think of it, I wonder how he’s doing on the battlefield."
[Giver of Gifts wonders if you’re worried about your friend.]
"Friend, huh? Yeah, he is my- Reina’s friend... I guess I am worried."
[Goddess of Wisdom smiles knowingly.]
"Well, I wonder if he’s doing well at the battlefield, he did look strong enough when I last saw him and I guess he will become stronger till the end of this war."
In future, Davian would be one of the very few humans who were able to control Aura and harness the power that could compete with the most powerful Mana users.
