Chapter 215: 214. Nobles Of Denril (1)
For the next few days, we had been travelling from village to village until we were crossing through the woods. I was tired from the whole day’s work so, I had dozed off in the back while Lyall was riding the carriage.
It was growing close to evening while we were yet to reach the next town.
"Master, it seems like we would have to make a stop in the forest somewhere," Lyall spoke up and I hummed back.
"All right."
He prepared a bonfire and laid out the sheets on the ground for me to sleep on. Soon the sun had set and the darkness was spreading across the skies like the dark mist.
Lyall hunted a couple of rabbits and we had dinner before I lay on my makeshift bed and Lyall sat resting his back against the tree close by to keep an eye on the surroundings. Despite, keeping my eyes closed my ears were still able to keep track of every sound that was happening around us.
A couple of hours later, I heard Lyall’s breathing slow down, it became deep and rhythmic making me sigh as I realised that he had fallen asleep. He was working harder these days, while I was healing people he had been on alert keeping me safe and travelling all the time while I took occasional naps.
I was glad that he could fall asleep quite well after having such exhausting days. I waited for my sleep to come before I smelled something from a couple of feet away. I sat up and looked once at Lyall who was still asleep.
The bonfire had gone out dousing us in the darkness of the night and I heard the sound of the twigs snapping a couple of feet away. I looked again at Lyall who stayed asleep before I moved.
I activated my Mana Eyes and spotted five of the men who were approaching us. I swiftly made my way towards them without letting them realise that I was coming for them.
"We only need to grab that girl and return."
"If the guy wakes up, take care of him."
I wasn’t surprised as I heard them speak of my kidnapping but they chose the wrong timing. I landed behind them and one of them who sensed me behind him quickly turned but before he could see me I took his head off with a water slicer.
The others who noticed his head bounce off the ground whipped around and looked at me with wide eyes and raised their weapons.
"Wha-What the-"
I brought my finger up to my lips and hushed them, "Be quiet, my knight has finally got to sleep so soundly after so much work. I would hate for him to lose his sleep over some bugs again so, hurry up and die without making any sound, all right?"
"Why you-"
I slashed their heads off with the water slicers at once making their bodies fall to the ground with the soft thuds. I watched their dead bodies for a moment with an apathetic look before I returned to our campsite where Lyall was still thankfully asleep.
I lay back down in my place and closed my eyes drifting off to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping and after some breakfast of bread and some fruits, we were back on the road. Lyall was unusually quiet for some reason and I wondered if he was having some troubling thoughts.
"Are you all right?" I asked him and he blinked before he turned to look at me
"Yes, Master."
"You seem troubled, is something the matter?"
His lips grew in a thin line before he said, "I’m sorry for falling asleep last night."
"What?"
"I... didn’t even realise when the attackers had come and you had to trouble yourself with taking care of them, Master. I’m really... sorry." He hung his head making me sigh.
"It’s fine to be tired, Lyall. You are a human unlike me, I can go without food or sleep for days,"
"But-"
"And those weaklings weren’t even worth any worry so, stop fretting over it," I spoke firmly making him seal his mouth.
"Besides, when are we reaching the next town?" I asked.
"We’re almost there, Master."
"Good, let’s have some lunch and finish our work."
The village we stopped at had quite a number of infected people and many for whom it was too late. I still managed to get my work done but not without realising something strange.
"Lyall, we’ve got tail." I mumbled as we walked towards the inn.
"What?" He stiffened.
"Don’t look around, from now on, we’ll act like normal pair of a noble lady and knight. If they approach us then just rid of them where nobody could see them." I instructed.
"Yes, Master."
Town after town passed by and I kept pretending to be a kind and normal lady while Lyall took care of those who tried to approach us with ill intentions silently. Soon enough, before we knew it we were in the town where I was supposed to meet the Fenson’s leader. I had purposely chosen an area where we wouldn’t have any people that would bother with me.
I finished my work as a "Saintess" for the day before we made our way back to the inn. The priests from this town had requested me to stay in the temple where they would provide me with the best that they had but I refused saying that I hated to impose.
We walked up to our room and I reverted back to Ocean’s male form and changed into the Assassin’s outfit. I had instructed Lyall to get some things and also to keep an eye on our surroundings in case our pursuers would figure out about our moves.
It was almost past midnight and I left the room through the window and flew all the way to the slum area. There was a particular place where the meeting which I wanted was possible without any problems.
I landed in the alleyway near the tavern where the current populace was next to none because of the time and also because the infected people had been cured.
There was a festival going on the town’s streets celebrating the Saintess who had brought the near dead people back to life. So most of the townsfolk were busy enjoying themselves there.
"Master, everything is ready." I heard Lyall as he appeared beside me.
"Good,"
We walked towards the tavern which was our meeting place and Lyall stepped ahead giving a nod to the man who stood at the entrance. He led us inside without a word.
The tavern was empty. The man led us up the stairs and then stood in front of a wooden door before looking once at Lyall and then opened it.
Lyall stepped inside first followed by me.
"I-If you need anything just call for me." The man said before he closed the door behind him and left.
"He won’t try to eavesdrop, right?" I asked as I inspected the room.
"No, he knows what will happen if he tries." Lyall assured me and I hummed.
"I’ll go and keep a watch outside." Lyall said and left the room.
I sat down on one of the chairs that were in the room and waited.
I looked at the notification that I had received around a couple of months ago before I had set out for Denril.
[Goddess of Wisdom has assigned you a quest.]
[Expose the wrongdoings of the Temple of Denril.
Rewards: Influence over the Denril and A Wise Familiar.
Failure: Destruction of Denril.]
"The work never ends." I mumbled.
What intrigued me about the reward was that I would get a familiar which would basically mean that I would be having a pet. I wondered what kind of pet I would get, I liked cats so maybe a cat?
After a couple of minutes, I heard the sound of three sets of footsteps approaching the room.
There was a knock on the door and Lyall’s voice asked for permission to enter. I allowed and the door swung open and three men entered including Lyall.
I eyed the two men in front of me as Lyall came and stood beside me. One of them was a large hulking figure draped in a deep brown cloak while the other man was considerably leaner and had a black cloak on.
"I believe I had a meeting with only one person." I said.
"I too believed that the meeting I had today was with a woman and not a man." The leaner one said and I smirked.
I had a mask on which covered the upper portion of my face while the two men in front of me had their lower faces concealed.
"The deal is ultimately with me so, isn’t it better that you meet me?"
"I think our man was fooled, we must take our leave."
The two men turned and I activated my Dragon’s Presence making the two to halt, the large man jumped into action but only twp steps towards me and he slumped on the ground because of the pressure.
"Wha-What is..."
The lean man clutched his chest making me sigh.
"Can you people do me some good and be a little smarter?"
"St-Stop it!" The lean man grunted and I lifted the spell.
His green eyes cautiously studied me as his body trembled and I tilted my head slightly.
"Please have a seat," I gestured him to the chair which was placed in front of me and he hesitantly took a seat.
"A-Are there two Dragons?" He asked cautiously and I smiled.
"No, I’m the only one."
His eyes grew wide, "The-Then you-"
"Instead of discussing my gender why don’t we discuss about the thing that we are here for, Duke Damon Lancaster?"
