Chapter 25: [Volume 1] Chapter 25-Idiots

"Te-test... there’s a way," Mr. Vallahe stammered, his voice trembling as he clung to a last shred of hope. His eyes were fixed on Esme, a desperate, almost pleading smile on his face. "We can do a blood test. It’ll prove that she’s Esme."

Kai, who had been observing Mr. Vallahe with a mix of disdain and amusement, was momentarily impressed. He hadn’t expected this level of intelligence from the man.

"Yes, we can do it!" Dianna chimed in eagerly, her voice filled with determination. She didn’t care how it was done—she needed to prove that this woman was Esme and kill her quietly.

If people found out Esme was alive and the rightful heir, Dianna knew her own life and status would be completely finished. The only solution in her mind was to confirm Esme’s identity and eliminate her, ensuring her secret stayed buried forever.

Kai let out a derisive laugh, the sound dripping with mockery. "Are you serious?" He crossed his arms and looked at them as if they’d just told him the most ridiculous joke in the world. "You’re telling me that the same family who failed to realize that the Esme who lived with you for twenty-three years was an imposter, and only discovered this a month ago, now wants to conduct a blood test on my wife? And you expect us to trust you? Wow, just wow."

His words hung in the air like a sharp blade, cutting through the desperate hopes of the Vallahe family. The crowd, sensing the absurdity of the situation, began to murmur amongst themselves. Kai’s point was clear: if the Vallahe family had been so easily deceived for so long, how could they be trusted now to determine the truth?

Kai’s gaze hardened as he continued, "You’ve already lost any credibility you might have had. The fact that you’re even suggesting this is laughable. My wife’s identity has been proven, and that’s the end of it. So, unless you have something more substantial to offer than a desperate plea, I suggest you stop embarrassing yourselves further."

The Vallahe family, stunned and humiliated, could only stand in silence as Kai’s words echoed in their ears.

Even the people standing there began to find the truth in Kai’s words. Suspicion spread through the crowd like wildfire. They hadn’t thought deeply about it before, but now a clear thought formed in their minds: If Esme was really an imposter, why didn’t the Vallahe family discover it earlier?

The idea that someone could live with a family while hiding their true identity might seem possible, but for a child raised from birth to conceal who they really were, and for their parents to remain oblivious for over two decades? That was highly unusual.

The more they considered it, the more the crowd’s confidence in the Vallahe family wavered, leaving them with a growing sense of unease.

"Honey," Esme, who had been silently watching everything unfold, finally spoke. She leaned into Kai’s shoulder, wrapping her arms around him with a gaze filled with love as she said softly, "Let them do the test."

Kai looked at her with a frown, clearly not pleased with the idea.

Esme, in response, pretended to be scared and acted in a sweet, coaxing manner. "Come on, honey, put yourself in their place," she said, her tone gentle as she looked at the Vallahe family with feigned pity. "Just think how hurt they must be. After all, they just lost their daughter."

Her words, though dripping with apparent empathy, carried a subtle edge, making it clear to anyone paying close attention that Esme was playing a game of her own. Her performance was flawless—sweet on the outside, but with a sharp undercurrent that left the Vallahe family teetering on the brink of crumbling.

After a moment of consideration, Kai finally nodded with a playful pout. "Fine... Hah, when have I ever won against you?"

"Mm, only in bed," Esme quickly quipped back, her voice teasing and light.

The entire room collectively blushed at her bold response, the tension briefly replaced by embarrassed chuckles.

But the atmosphere changed in an instant when a sharp smack echoed through the hall. Kai’s hand had landed firmly on Esme’s cheek, leaving the crowd stunned. He stood there with his hand still raised, his face flushed with anger before he nonchalantly lowered it, straightening his coat as if nothing had happened.

The room fell silent, all eyes on Esme, expecting her to lash out in fury. After all, this was Esme Vallahe—or so they believed—a woman known for her iron will and zero tolerance for disrespect. But to everyone’s shock, Esme didn’t appear angry at all. Instead, she looked at Kai with a playful pout.

"Honey~ did I say something wrong?" she asked, her tone dripping with sweetness.

Smack!

Another slap, this one even harder than the first, rang out as Kai landed another hit on Esme. The crowd was now completely confused, their certainty wavering. This couldn’t be Esme Vallahe. The Esme they knew was a powerful, untouchable figure—someone who would never allow anyone, not even her own husband, to treat her this way.

Rumors of Esme’s ruthless nature flooded their minds. It was said that she once withdrew all her investments from her fiancé’s family just because he had mistakenly touched her face, nearly bringing them to ruin. She was a woman who wouldn’t tolerate even the slightest affront, let alone public humiliation.

And yet, here she was, enduring Kai’s strikes without so much as a flicker of anger. Instead, she seemed almost amused, like she was in on some private joke that no one else could understand.

The crowd began to murmur, doubts spreading like wildfire. Could this really be Esme? Or was this woman truly someone else, as Kai claimed? The seeds of uncertainty were sown, leaving everyone questioning the truth of what they had seen and heard.

....

As Esme stood before the group of medical experts, the tension in the room was palpable. The air was thick with anticipation as everyone watched, waiting to see if the truth would finally be revealed. The woman physician, dressed in white with her face partially covered by a mask, stepped forward with a calm, professional demeanor.
