The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 69
Chapter 69: Chapter 69
Adeline kept a watchful eye on Veronica and Liam waiting for the perfect chance to approach Liam.
Nathan kept himself busy with food and wine since he didn’t share the same interests as Adeline. "Am I boring you? Since we’ve sat down, you’ve been staring at those two which is odd considering you don’t like Veronica. Should I get up so I don’t block your view?"
"No. I’m enjoying my time with you," Adeline answered, looking away from the couple to make Nathan happy. "Aren’t you having too much wine?"
"I’m not driving tonight. I left home to enjoy myself and unlike you, that is what I am doing. The food here is good. Why don’t we come here more often?" Nathan wondered.
Adeline could take a good guess that it wasn’t their style. Since when did Liam enjoy coming to places like this? The location was good but after looking around, Adeline didn’t see anyone she knew which wasn’t a good sign.
"Then fill up on your wine and get ready to leave. I’m tired and you have an event to get to in the morning. First, I need to get to the bathroom," Adeline said, setting aside her napkin as she stood up.
"Sure," Nathan replied but took his time with his wine.
Adeline left her table to follow Liam to the bathroom. She was counting on their talk to go a little better with Veronica not present.
Adeline had to wait outside the bathroom for Liam to step out and when he did, he was not pleased. "We need to talk."
"I’m starting to wonder if I have been speaking another language without realising which is why you don’t understand me. I don’t want to speak to you and I would appreciate it if you never wait outside a bathroom again. Excuse me," Liam said, trying to leave only for his mother to block his way. "What now?"
"You need to be more careful about your grandfather. I don’t know why you and your father suddenly want to be careless when it comes to him, but you must go to him. If you keep acting this way, he’s going to see you as useless and hurt you. I’m trying to protect you," said Adeline.
Liam decided to hear her out a little. "You know there are other ways to protect me from him, right? Starting with stop asking me to go to him. You don’t want to be helping him or your brother yet you’re pulling me into it. Mother of the year stays out of your hands year after year."
"I do my role in the family because it keeps me safe and for a long time, it kept you safe. Then you repay me by leaving home and not going to the school we had been talking about forever. Then there was that wedding which I am trying hard to forget. You have never been grateful for what I did to keep you safe," Adeline argued.
All she needed was a little thanks and for Liam to finally listen.
"I didn’t like home and I didn’t promise you that I would attend the same school every Smith attended. What am I supposed to be grateful for when you tried to control my life and disrespected my wife? I was stupid then when I brought her to meet you. Why did I have the tiniest bit of hope you would accept the person who makes me happy?" Liam wondered.
His positive thoughts in the past puzzled him since he knew his mother.
Adeline was tired of this old story. "You married a woman whose mother has a reputation for trapping someone with money. What was I supposed to be welcoming of? I raised you to look out for the people who want to use you and then you turn around to do this. What has happened to you?"
"It’s a bit disappointing that my mother doesn’t understand me. You’ve never given Veronica a chance to see that she never wanted to use me. For all the things you think she swindled out of me, I willingly gave them to her without her asking because I love my wife and want to spoil her. I wouldn’t expect you to know much about love," Liam said and then left his mother’s side.
Liam’s words stabbed Adeline in her heart since she did know about love. She loved him and his father despite how they treated her sometimes. Neither one of them realised that she threw herself into doing her father’s dirty work so they would be safe.
If not for protecting Liam and Nathan, Adeline would have gone through with a plan she had when she was younger to leave the city and hide from her father. What made anyone think she wanted to be a servant to her father?
Adeline grabbed Liam’s hand. "Your grandfather just wants to talk to you. Go and hear him out. Showing your face would make him a little less angry. Don’t do something stupid like showing up with Veronica. He doesn’t like her."
Liam removed Adeline’s hand from holding him. "I already know he doesn’t like her. I know of his attacks on her and the ones you tried to carry out. Like messing with her art gallery. If you have any love for me like you claim, you would stop troubling my wife."
"I have not troubled her. I don’t even think about her. All I care about you," Adeline said, trying to touch Liam’s face but he stepped away from her. "Why do you need to always treat me like this? After everything I have done for you. This is no way to treat your mother and all for what? That woman?"
Liam didn’t bother to correct his mother on Veronica’s name. It was pointless to argue with her.
Instead of responding, Liam headed back to his table since it was time for him and Veronica to go home. They were lucky that his parents’ presence had not ruined the night.
Adeline remained by the bathrooms once again watching Liam from afar. He never listened and because of it, he was going to get himself killed.
For the first time since they arrived, Adeline decided to check her phone. Her family should be well into dinner by now and Benjamin wouldn’t be able to resist telling her if her father was angry with her.
It came as a surprise not to see a message from anyone. Rather than feel relieved, Adeline was worried as silence meant something was brewing, waiting to explode in the future.
