The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 68
Chapter 68: Chapter 68
"All this time, you pushed me forward because you couldn’t control Adeline? I thought you had more faith in me," Benjamin said, having to sit as this hit him hard. "I’ve done everything you asked me to do and succeeded. I’m just as good as Adeline if not better."
Vance laughed because Benjamin believed what he said. "You’ll never be better than Adeline. Despite her flaws, she’s the child I’m most proud of. You could learn a lot from your sister and I want you to. You need to try to do something without her."
Benjamin had an urge to laugh at his father’s confession. "All this time I was walking around thinking you picked me because I proved myself to you but I was just Adeline’s replacement because you couldn’t control her. What has she done that I can’t?"
"Watch your tone," Vance warned Benjamin. "Adeline has done everything for you and kept you out of trouble. Had you not been careless because you knew your sister would be there to clean up everything? I’m getting tired of wasting money on you."
Benjamin didn’t have an excuse. He could always do as he wanted because his family had him covered.
"You need to clean up your act and fast, Benjamin. I’ve allowed you to be too careless for too long. That ends tonight. No more partying till you get high out of your mind or drunk. Why do you trust those people to not speak about what you do at parties? Are you trusting Adeline to pay them off?" Vance asked.
Benjamin leaned back on his chair. "It’s stressful to do the work I have to do these days. I need a little bit of fun. I’m not the only person who has this kind of fun. What’s so bad about Adeline cleaning up behind me? It’s the job you gave her."
"I tasked her to clean up small mistakes, not for you to be doing everything in the world to get yourself in a big mess and blow this for us. There’s a lot of people waiting for you to get elected and if you ruin this for me, I’ll get rid of you," Vance threatened Benjamin.
Vance had too much counting on this to let Benjamin screw it up and get away with it.
"I’m not going to screw up but I’m sure you’re convinced in your head that I will. I’m going to prove you and Adeline wrong. You shouldn’t be complimenting her so much when she’s been going behind your back to get your peers on her side. I bet you didn’t know that. Why do you think Liam hasn’t backed me? He’s going to back his mother," Benjamin argued.
Vance doubted it since he knew Liam hated his mother. He made the mistake of not taking Liam from Adeline’s hands to raise himself. Then Liam would have turned out better, falling in line like everyone else.
"I look forward to you proving me wrong. I’ve waited long for you to make me proud and as for Adeline going to my peers, end that. Your sister is smart. She knows not to turn her back on her family. That boy is just hard to control. If I had him in my hands, he would have been perfect," Vance said, wanting Liam even more.
Benjamin laughed. Not only was he below his sister but he was below his nephew as well. "Liam has never done anything right. Never tried to help the family or come around us. He’s going to be someone we need to look out for. I don’t understand why you need him so much."
"He has the aura of a king."
Benjamin tried not to roll his eyes at his father’s belief that people had auras. It was one of the silliest things he ever heard from his father.
"He won’t bow down to anyone and will put up a good fight. I should have raised him and prepared him for what you have. Then I wouldn’t be so disappointed. How is it that your sister has everything? The right husband, son, and common sense? Where did I go wrong with you?" Vance wondered, puzzled by how Benjamin turned out like this.
Benjamin wanted to blame his father since he was the one who controlled every little detail about his life from where he went to school to who he married yet Vance still wasn’t a fan of Benjamin’s wife.
"There’s still time to make me proud of you. Start proving that you could do without Adeline and teach Liam what he needs to know. He’ll be next for our family," Vance said, already planning Liam’s future. "His wife doesn’t fit. Get rid of her by any means necessary. Why did he marry someone with nothing to her name? He made the stupid mistake you almost made."
Vance got a headache just from seeing the photos of Liam and Veronica out together. Everything was perfect except for her. The Harpers were a family not on their level and Veronica wasn’t really a Harper.
"What should I do?" Benjamin asked and regretted it after Vance gave him a cruel look. "I’ll figure it out. I’ll have someone tail her or get Julia to lure her out. When you say get rid of her, do you mean to kill her? Isn’t that a little risky for me to do?"
"Don’t get caught. Don’t disappoint me, Benjamin. You’ve already run out of chances to please me. Now, get out of my home. I’m not in the mood to have dinner with only you," Vance said, having enough of Benjamin.
Benjamin frowned. "Isn’t mother-"
"Leave," Vance stood up. "Go think of how to get close to Liam and get rid of his wife. You’ll need all the time you have to think about a plan."
Benjamin remained seated as his father walked around him to leave the office first. He needed to hit something. For years he had been rubbing it in Adeline’s face that he was the favourite when it had been her all along.
Now he had become an errand boy, taking care of a mess Adeline should’ve taken care of long ago. What did he look like plotting to kill Liam’s wife and also have to kiss up to Liam to bring him over to their side?
Benjamin stood up to leave. He hated coming over to his father’s home as it always ended with him insulted. ’I would like to get rid of all of them,’ he thought.
The way Benjamin saw it, he didn’t need his father or Adeline around to help him anymore.
