Chapter 45: Chapter 45

Veronica moved her arm to not be touched by Sabrina. Who just asks someone about their marriage like this when they were not close?

"Sorry? Was I nosey there?" Sabrina asked, feigning innocence.

"You were. That isn’t a question you ask anyone but since you didn’t know any better, I will let it slide but just this once. I can’t promise you my reaction will be good next time. My marriage is fine and will always be," Veronica replied.

Sabrina didn’t like the sass Veronica had for her. "It was just a question since you looked tired. I heard marriage could be draining and in your position where so many people don’t like you for Liam, you just need a break. I brought you something that should help you relax. I left it at the counter."

"Thank you but I am not tired with my marriage. I am tired of the people coming around me to ask stupid questions. I know you are not here to look after me so let’s get this over with fast. You came to make your judgement of me. See what he picked," said Veronica.

Sabrina folded her arms. "I am curious about you since you just popped up and took him but I am not here to judge you. I already have my opinion of you."

Veronica wasn’t curious to ask what it was. Instead, she wanted to know what Sabrina was here for then. "You’re not here to see art so tell me, why did you come if you already made up your mind about me."

"I was just curious. Can’t a girl be curious? I wanted to see what it is that you own and I am quite impressed. Then again, the Sterlings don’t disappoint with their ventures. Liam must have worked hard on this," said Sabrina.

Veronica smiled. "Oh, I see. Your opinion of me is that I must be some gold-digger who has everything done for her by her husband. Is that it?"

Sabrina turned to Veronica. "You said it, not me. I like that you realise it. It’s obvious why a woman like you went after Liam. Just look at your mother. I am not trying to judge or understand who you are. I already know women like you. What I am trying to understand is why."

Sabrina was stuck trying to find the answer to why Liam settled for Veronica when he had better options. It didn’t make any sense. The Liam she knew would never do something like this. He was better at picking out the people trying to use him so how did this one get by him?

Veronica laughed. It really was like she was living in one of the TV shows she saw in her free time. "Why are all of you going around the world to find answers when they are right in front of you? We got married because we love each other. Just be honest and say you don’t like him for me but I don’t care."

"This isn’t like Liam-"

"You don’t know my husband as well as you think you do. It must hurt to have your eyes opened to this now but you need to let it go. We are married and I am not going to let go of him. No, it doesn’t have to do with money," Veronica added before Sabrina could bring it up. "My marriage is not for anyone else to understand."

Sabrina wanted to swing her bag but it would be beneath to fight anyone. "You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. We don’t welcome any and everyone into our spaces. This isn’t like your mother with the Harpers. The Sterlings and my family are higher up."

"You’ve been watching more shows than I have and it sounds like you are in the wrong time. Are you trying to play like a princess trying to send away a lowly maid? This kind of talk doesn’t scare me," Veronica said, wanting it to stop.

Sabrina laughed since Veronica was clueless. Was Veronica always this way or did her accident do something to her?

"Nothing has changed. There are still people high up on a ladder and then there are people like you trying to climb up that ladder. Most know the right way is to work to go up the ladder or know not to move from their place but then some like you use dirty ways to reach the top," said Sabrina.

Sabrina looked at Veronica head to toe. "I wonder, do your knees hurt?"

Veronica ignored the wrong assumption of how she got Liam. "You should be careful. You’re still speaking to Mrs. Sterling and while I can handle myself, I might go so low as to cry to my husband just to see what he will do. Don’t play stupid games because you’ll win stupid prizes."

"I can take your word for it since all you’ve gotten is people down your throat since you married Liam. If you were smart, you would divorce him before you get too deep into that family. You would have been smarter if you hadn’t gotten married to him. A woman like you doesn’t get shown to the family-"

"Yet I did," Veronica interjected. "Regardless of whether they like me or not, I was introduced to them and he still married me despite their objection."

"Oh. Is that it?" Sabrina figured she finally got her answer. "It was a bit much but he finally pulled something to get under their skin. He’s been trying to find a way to make his mother lose her mind and now he’s succeeded. He’s using you to piss off his family. That’s more like the Liam I know."

Sabrina opened her bag for a cheque she had written before coming inside. "Since you helped me, I should tip you. Right?"

"Keep your money," Veronica replied.

Sabrina held out the cheque. "I know Liam has a lot of money but you should keep something for yourself. You never know when you’ll have a bad day and end up right where you started. Just take it. Don’t act like you’re too good for tips now."

"You, it’s funny how you all are judging me when you behave like this. You should take that money elsewhere. Enjoy looking at the art and when it is done, be safe on your way home. I would like to see you out but I might be in a rush to have lunch with my husband. The man you are making a fool of yourself over," Veronica said, purposely showing her hand with the ring.

"I’m not going to fight with you and have this little petty conversation with you again. Do you know why? I already have Liam so why should I waste my breath with you?" Veronica replied, seeing this as not worth her time.

"I am grateful that since you are so invested in my life, you’re going to be spending money at my art gallery. Enjoy your visit and come with friends next time. I will give you a discount," Veronica winked.

Veronica walked around Sabrina to go to Jerome who waited with two cups.

Sabrina didn’t move. "Who are you to speak to me this way?"

Veronica stopped. "Veronica Sterling."

And here Veronica thought she was the only one with memory loss.
