Chapter 44: Chapter 44

After a busy morning of going to the doctor, Veronica parted from Liam since he needed to go to work and the time had finally come for her to visit the art gallery.

"I’m sorry to be taking you away from Liam," she said, apologetic to Jerome. He was more her assistant than Liam’s at the moment.

"It is fine. I am going back to work after introducing you to everyone at the art gallery. Will you act like your memories are back? Your current employees are loyal to you but still, you should be careful," Jerome advised Veronica.

"I will be careful. I don’t plan on telling anyone to have them worried about me. It would be easy for them to let it slip that I am relying on Liam for my memories. How long have I liked art?" Veronica asked.

"I am not certain. Would you like me to send a message to Mr. Sterling?" Jerome replied, his phone ready to do just that.

"No," Veronica shook her head. "I don’t want to bother him when he is at work. Liam does have all the answers."

"Well, he loved you. Loves,’ Jerome corrected himself.

Veronica looked out the car window at the buildings they passed by. "I can feel that he loves me. It is just a strange position to be in because I don’t feel the same way right now. What would you do?"

Jerome hesitated because this concerned his boss. Still, he answered, "I would not lose my partner. You picked him for a reason and was with him this long. I would fight to remember; if you don’t, you can fall back in love with him again."

Veronica smiled. "I thought you were a man of little words and uninterested in this kind of thing, but you are helpful. If Liam isn’t careful, I will steal you away from him. I don’t know if I can pay you as much but I will make a good offer. Is this it?"

Veronica became distracted by what appeared to be the art gallery. It was larger than she imagined. She refrained from searching it on the web because she wanted to see it before her.

Veronica exited the car before the driver came to open her door. She was in a rush to get inside to see what she had put together.

Jerome exited the car and followed Veronica. The employees were notified of her arrival so they should be in place to make this visit go smoothly then they would head to Liam’s.

As they walked up the steps, Jerome noticed a familiar car. The owner didn’t pop up in his head but he knew he had seen it before. He stopped to snap a photo and sent it to someone.

"Whose car is it?" He heard Veronica ask.

Veronica walked back down to where Jerome stood to get a better look at the expensive car. "I might have an important visitor or someone who is here to cause trouble. If it’s my mother or Liam’s mother, it would be suspicious that they know I would be here today. If they show up where I go then it will leave me feeling like someone is reporting to them."

"It isn’t one of their cars. I have seen it before but I can’t recall the owner. I’ve sent it to be checked by someone. You should go inside before it rains," Jerome said, worried about the sky as it turned dark.

"Okay," Veronica replied, forgetting about the car for now. Whoever it belonged to was inside so she would see who came.

When Veronica walked through the doors there was a feeling of being home. Already she was captivated by the art placed when you first entered the doors. She noticed the two employees excited to see her.

"Mrs. Sterling!"

"Hello," Veronica greeted the pair. "I’m sorry it took so long for me to visit but it looks like everyone has it handled here."

Veronica could spend the rest of her day looking at the art instead of going home to be bored. Not only did she seemingly have a good eye for picking men but she also had a good eye for picking art.

"I’m going to do a quick look around and then when everyone is free, we will have a quick meeting. Tell the others. We should probably close the doors when we have that meeting. We can’t have visitors not able to have someone to help them," said Veronica.

Veronica left the two to inform the others and looked around at the art pieces.

"This isn’t the only business you have. This was more of a hobby for you but you spent more time in real estate and making investments. An old apartment is one of the properties you have to your name," Jerome revealed.

"No wonder that man thinks I am behind Liam buying the building. That was good to know. Thank you-"

"Mrs. Sterling!" A familiar voice called out to Veronica.

Veronica wasn’t happy to see the woman from the charity event standing before her. She couldn’t remember the name.

"It’s Sabrina," Sabrina picked up on the fact Veronica acted like she didn’t know her name. She said it last night. ’Jealousy doesn’t look good on her,’ she thought.

Sabrina looked at the art Veronica was walking to. "I’ve been meaning to visit this gallery since it’s so popular for its unique pieces. It is even more special that you are the one who owns it. When you are ready to sell some of the pieces I will be here front and centre to buy a few."

"Oh," Sabrina covered her mouth. "But they are not pieces by famous artists. You should include more names that are circling the art world already."

"This gallery was created to shine some light on artists who have not made it big," said Jerome.

Sabrina’s gaze switched to the annoying little man. Why wasn’t he at Liam’s side?

"I applaud you, Veronica. You’re so charitable. I wonder how you came to have such a big heart. I even heard that Liam made a big donation last night. Some of the people who can’t afford their tuition will be relieved when they get the news in a few days. Isn’t it great?" Sabrina asked.

Veronica knew what Sabrina was doing. This woman was too easy to read. "Jerome, can you find me something to drink? It can be water."

Veronica wanted him gone so he wouldn’t be in the middle of this petty conversation.

"You looked a bit tired," Sabrina said, touching Veronica’s arm. "Trouble in your marriage?"
