The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 38
Chapter 38: Chapter 38
"I don’t have the time to deal with those two," Adeline muttered, doing her best to avoid her father and brother.
The charity event had not gone the way she wanted in a few ways but that was out of her control. It was expected of Liam to leave first but this time, the party was filled with questions about Veronica.
Veronica left before they could get answers about what happened to her.
It was a slap in the face for something Adeline worked so hard on to become a room for others to speak about Veronica.
"Mrs. Sterling!"
Adeline wasn’t in the mood to entertain speaking to Evelyn. It slipped her mind to send the Harpers out of the event quietly since they were of no use. "Evelyn, my husband and I are grateful for the donation you gave tonight. Seven thousand will go a long way I suppose."
Evelyn cleared her throat before she spoke. "We’re sending another three grand. After all that was said tonight, we just want to do more. I’d be more than happy to get involved in your community for charities."
Adeline wanted to laugh. Evelyn was only donating ten grand and thought she could be in the community. Evelyn was only worth having around when Adeline needed a good laugh.
"I’m sorry but all the seats are currently filled. Everyone who joined has not left yet so there aren’t any seats available right now but when they are, you will be my first pick,’ said Adeline.
Evelyn smiled despite wanting to call out Adeline on her lie. She knew from a good source that Adeline was looking for more women to invite to the community. Adeline was just too selective about who got in.
"I hope so. You’re doing so many charities that it is time for you to put more seats. It wouldn’t be good for you to be picky with who is there when you can have more hands to help you. I know you aren’t like that," Evelyn laughed and playfully touched Adeline’s shoulder.
"Right. Be safe on your way back," Adeline said, ready to see Evelyn go. "You should go see how your daughter is since Liam said she hasn’t recovered. Nothing seems to be wrong with her memories."
Evelyn couldn’t continue the act of kissing Adeline’s ass anymore. "Are you questioning if I brought you the right news? I don’t speak about something I don’t know to be true. I am a reliable source."
Adeline laughed. "Yet your daughter walked in here as she always did. Would you be so kind as to not invite me for lunch anymore? Save us both the trouble of having to be bored with a conversation."
Evelyn bit her tongue but she couldn’t hold back for long. "She doesn’t have her memories. I know my daughter and from what I saw tonight, she’s putting on an act. She woke up thinking that Beth was her sister and didn’t recognise Liam."
"Don’t get snappy with me because you can’t control your son. I felt embarrassed for you to see him walk away from you like that. Do you want to see how it looked?" Evelyn raised her phone, revealing without saying it that she captured the moment.
Adeline wasn’t phased by Evelyn. Evelyn was a small goldfish compared to the sharks coming after her. "For someone with money trouble, you should be trying to kiss my ass more than you already do."
"I will do you a favour and return the seven grand you promised so far. I will put seven thousand of my money to not embarrass you. I can sleep well tonight knowing that I have helped someone who needed the money. Thank you for coming. The cars are that way," Adeline pointed to the door.
Evelyn smiled. Adeline was too cocky with looking down on others. "I would be careful if I were you, Adeline. I am not someone you want to make an enemy. I am the only person being successful with reaching out to my daughter. If you are not careful, I might advise her to have a child with Liam. Then my money troubles would be solved."
"Isn’t it eighteen years he would have to support her for and if we talk about a divorce, I will do what I can to have her clean him out so please, treat me as your friend instead of looking down on me. I know you gossip about how I hooked Henry. Be careful or I’ll hook your son," said Evelyn.
"You’re playing with fire," Adeline warned Evelyn. Evelyn wasn’t aware how far Adeline was willing to go to get the pests from near her son. "You should go back to kissing my ass instead of talking so much. Deal with your daughter before she has you as the next person found out at sea."
Evelyn frowned. Was it Adeline who put Veronica in that situation?
Evelyn wasn’t stupid as she knew Adeline could get her hands dirty if she wanted to and hide it well. Her family had all the right connections to make accusations made against them go away. Still, Evelyn didn’t like when someone looked down on her so she couldn’t just back away.
"You said that like you know who or why she was on that boat. You’re supposed to have clean hands because of your brother running again. I think we would be great friends since we both want something from Veronica. I know you will be the one doing the reaching out. Henry," Evelyn called to her husband. "Time to go."
Evelyn couldn’t go chasing Adeline again.
Adeline watched as Evelyn strutted with the bag that was out of season and enjoyed the photographers taking her pictures. It annoyed her to think that Nathan was right about her inviting that family to the event.
"Sis-"
"Not now," Adeline stopped her brother before he could anger her again. "Go talk about the event or your run. Do something other than bother me. I am not in the mood."
Benjamin liked it when Adeline was ticked off by something. It was fun to see her lose her cool. "This was some event you planned. I believe I was promised after hearing that my nephew was going to show public support to me and that I wouldn’t have to see that little charity case with him. You’re losing your touch."
"Why? Are you worried that if I don’t have everything go as planned you won’t be voted for again? Instead of bothering me, take that mute wife you have and go speak about your run," Adeline advised her brother.
