The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 39
Chapter 39: Chapter 39
"Mute wife? That’s not nice of you when I haven’t heard from your husband in a while. You need to keep a good leash on him before you tell me about my wife, Addy," Benjamin taunted her with a name he knew she hated.
Adeline stared at her brother. There were too many times when she just wanted to slap him but she stopped herself since there were too many witnesses around. "I want to be like you one day. Not having to think since someone else does it for you. Don’t trouble the person making a path for you to become mayor."
"I am just playing with you as your older brother. Why are you always so tense? Is Nathan not doing well at relieving your stress? He looks like a man who needs a little help," said Benjamin.
Adeline couldn’t believe her father was putting all his eggs in Benjamin’s baskets again. "The city just might be doomed if you become mayor. Don’t drink," she took a glass from Benjamin’s hands. "You know how you get when you drink and I am not in the mood to clean up another one of your scandals."
"Why not? That’s your job given to you by our father. I do as I like and you come in to clean up any slip-ups. You’re good at being a cleaner. Always have and will be but you know sis, my patience is running out waiting for Liam to show public support to me," Benjamin said, sharing the same annoyance as their father.
"You’re too busy taking your sweet time getting rid of his wife. We were talking about bringing a charity case into the family to have someone relatable for the public but we didn’t mean for Liam. Get your act together," Benjamin ordered Adeline.
When she slipped up too much then it affected him and now was not the time for Benjamin to not look good.
"Make sure the company announces they are on my side by the end of the week and put it nicely how much I donated tonight. I’m getting tired of these charity events so don’t do it so often," said Benjamin.
"It is annual, you idiot. I am not the one in charge of the other parties you attend. You have people who tell you what to do. I don’t work for you so don’t you dare order me around. Put out the articles about how much you spend by yourself. I already did my part in gathering the reporters. I’m leaving," Adeline announced, tired after a long day.
"That woman," Benjamin said before Adeline walked away. "She’s been in our family for a while now. I’m curious how much she knows by being at Liam’s side. You know as good as I do is that no one just walks away from this family. Dispose of her so we don’t need to worry about secrets getting out."
Benjamin didn’t see the point in waiting for a divorce.
Veronica was a big distraction for both Adeline and Liam. Then the marriage had the Harpers thinking they were one big family.
"If we get rid of her and Liam suspects that it is us, he’s going to drag all of us down so you can kiss becoming mayor goodbye. Don’t get involved and don’t do something to her. Leave it to me," Adeline advised her brother.
"I’ve already reached out to Liam. Our father is losing his patience so he wants to speak to Liam. It’s about time that Liam enters the political world. We’ve let him have his fun in his father’s company now he has to do his part in our world. I can’t wait for you to convince him anymore," Benjamin said since Adeline couldn’t control her son.
Adeline closed her hand into a fist. Holding back from hitting Benjamin was getting harder by the second. ’They went behind my back to reach out to Liam?’
After all the work she was doing to make her family look good this was the thanks she got in the end?
"You, was it you?" Adeline started to wonder. "Was it you who led her to that boat? It’s just like you to not see it through to the end."
Benjamin laughed at the accusation. "Me? Don’t put that on me especially when there is so much coverage on it. You should have gotten her to sit and tell the press that it was her fault she almost died. I was thinking that you finally snapped and realised how to get her out of the family."
Adeline didn’t fully believe Benjamin because of his smile. He always said that little unfortunate accidents were the best way to get someone out of the family. ’It wasn’t me," she answered.
"Sure it wasn’t. You had all those arranged dates set up then he showed up with her out of the blue. I know how much you hate that he kept her a secret from you and now you have the Harpers acting like we’re a family. I won’t tell if it was you trying to get rid of her. I’m proud of you for getting your hands dirty," said Benjamin.
"It wasn’t me," Adeline repeated. She wouldn’t have Benjamin or anyone else putting that on her. "Grab your wife and go do interviews. I am leaving."
Adeline left Benjamin’s side to find Nathan so they could leave together. She had enough of the charity event and being in the spotlight.
Adeline grabbed Nathan as soon as he was finished speaking to his peers and got into the car to head home.
Nathan loosened his tie. "What is it now? What do your family want?"
"They want Liam to join their side but also to get Veronica from his side. My brother thinks I was the one who got her on that boat. How stupid," said Adeline.
"Well," Nathan’s voice gave away that he wasn’t convinced. "You hate her more than anyone. I was getting ready to defend myself that I had nothing to do with it."
"Nathan!" Adeline couldn’t believe her husband. "I did nothing to her. You’ve seen me home-"
"You have a lot of people who work for you and you have access to people who will do anything for money. It’s not unreasonable for you to be looked at as a suspect but lucky for you, it’s being written off as an accident and she doesn’t have her memories. Relax a bit," Nathan urged Adeline. "Have a drink and try a little harder next time."
Adeline could only laugh. "What’s the point in trying to plead my innocence to you or anyone? It could be any of you and I will not be the one who takes the fall for it."
