Chapter 37: Chapter 37

Veronica sat on the hood of their car looking ahead at the view of the city from the lookout point they parked at. Her ice cream was early gone but luckily, there was still the shake Liam said she liked to have.

"I see why we liked it so much. I could have another, but perhaps another day," Veronica said, secretly wishing the ice cream had a way of forming again so she could eat it a second time. "When you are free, we could go there together. Or I could go when I have nothing to do."

"You could. Maxwell will take you wherever you want to go," said Liam.

"I’m not looking to pick a fight but when he takes me around, will he report my location to you?" Veronica said, trying to understand how much Liam kept track of her.

"He will," Liam honestly replied. "I made the mistake of waiting too long to ask you what you had gotten yourself in. I won’t do it again. I’ve told everyone looking after you to always tell me where you are. You can ask Jerome to report to you where I am. I’m sure he would do it."

"Oh, right. Jerome," she reminded the man who made her think about divorce. "Was I close to him? He works for you but it can’t be that I am close to everyone who does."

"You were close to Jerome. Like friends which made him feel awkward to be invited by you to attend our parties. You helped him get the job so he’s been grateful and in a way loyal to you since then. You can trust him because I trust him," said Liam.

"Good to know," Veronica replied.

She had two people on her list so far. Edna and Jerome.

"I’m hoping to have a change of pace at the art gallery tomorrow. A good break from thinking about our families. If I could have someone at home who could tell me about my past, that would be good. I don’t like to question Edna and be taking her away from doing her job," Veronica explained why she felt lonely.

"I’ll be working from home for a while starting tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be there with you and I can invite some of your friends to keep you company. You need to be careful but you can still go around the town. You don’t need to ask me where you can go. You are a grown woman,’ Liam reminded Veronica.

"Do you see me as controlling?" Liam asked.

"I did at first but now I see you as careful. You schooled me on most of the people present but that wasn’t enough. I got a feeling that I shouldn’t go anywhere near them just from looking at some of the attendees. I trust you who knows everything to keep me safe," Veronica replied.

It wouldn’t work in her favour to not at least listen to what Liam told her about others since she knew nothing.

"If you start to try keeping me at home when I want to go somewhere that’s not a big deal to me then we will have a problem. Why are you laughing when I am being serious? Do you think I can’t get by you to get out of our home? Liam," she called to him as he continued to laugh.

"I’m sorry, Veronica. You don’t remember anything but you’re still the same. There’s just less of a threatening tone when you speak. I’m starting to wonder if you’re fooling me," Liam said as she was the type to do this kind of scheme to protect him.

Veronica turned to face Liam to look him dead in the eye. "Liam, I am not pulling a stunt. Other than what you told me, I can’t remember anything about us. I was that skilled to get away with pretending I lost my memories?"

Liam nodded his head. "You would have had a better acting career than your mother."

Veronica snorted but found the sound to be awful so she looked away.

"Why are you hiding? I’ve seen and heard you at your worst. It’s not the first time you have snorted. Should I tell you some embarrassing stories about yourself? I have a few," Liam said, smiling at the thought of them.

"I’d rather not be embarrassed twice. The view here is nice," Veronica said, trying to shift the conversation from herself. "Have we ever thought of living somewhere else? In another city where you would still be able to do your work?"

"No. We’re not ones to run away and we lived in our little bubble with people we liked. The city isn’t bad once you know how to navigate your way through it," said Liam.

Liam felt his phone vibrate in his pants but didn’t move to take it out. "Give me the tissue to throw away. You should soon be able to drink the shake."

Veronica gave Liam her trash and waited by the car as he found a garbage can. She watched him intently and thought of their relationship. She could see why she fell in love with him but unfortunately, Veronica didn’t feel that way toward him now.

There were only small moments when something he did or said left her feeling like a schoolgirl having her first crush.

Veronica looked back at the city. Photos from the charity event had to be shared by now.

There was a storm that would come over the city but it had nothing to do with the weather. Veronica figured out Adeline better than anyone else to know that she was not going to let go of Liam leaving early when she wanted him up there for a big photo.

"My mother is a headache but Adeline is dangerous", Veronica concluded.

She didn’t know what to make of Liam’s father yet. Did he like her or was he putting up with her so Liam wouldn’t walk away from the family business? It was hard to decide if Nathan was an ally when Liam didn’t seem to like his father around.

"I’ve already told you..."

Veronica turned to Liam speaking on the phone in the distance. She knew that there had to be trouble brewing on his phone. Had it reached a boiling point now? "Liam," she said, sliding off the car to go to him.

Liam ended the call just as she reached him.

Veronica folded her arms. "You said there wasn’t trouble."

"Other than pissing off my mother from leaving the event early, there wasn’t any trouble when you asked me but now my uncle wants to talk. If not for needing my phone, I would love to throw it from here," Liam said, looking away from Veronica to the drop where the phone would go.

"I won’t look at the phone anymore," he promised, turning it off to not be disturbed. "Where did we leave our conversation?"

"Our bubble in the city," Veronica answered.
