The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 36
Chapter 36: Chapter 36
Veronica felt as though she went through a maze with how long it took to get to their car since two of the exits had reporters waiting for them.
"If we normally leave early and the first exit was our way out then this was an ambush, wasn’t it?" Veronica asked, already knowing who had to be behind it.
"It was. I would put good money on my mother or my uncle. You can relax now," Liam said, gently rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb.
It took longer than he wanted but they made it out of the party in one piece without Veronica having to answer to what happened to her.
Veronica relaxed back on her seat. She peered at Liam typing away on his phone. "Is there trouble? You’ve been on your phone since you came off the stage."
"No. Would you like to have ice cream with me?" Liam asked, setting aside his phone.
"Now? At this hour?" Veronica asked, looking outside at the night sky.
"Isn’t this what we look forward to when we are young? To have ice cream at any hour. A place we used to stop by a lot in our college days is nearby. It’s been some time since we had and we’re both free right now," said Liam.
Veronica couldn’t say no when it was a piece from their past. One of the links she needed to understand how their relationship started. "I am in the mood for ice cream now that you mention it."
"We’ll get two cones and a thick oreo shake you liked to keep for the ride home. There’s a view we can go see and not be bothered by anyone. Maxwell," Liam called to the driver. "Take us to Sal’s Ice Cream Shop."
"Yes sir."
"When you say I would take the shake home, does that mean we started to live with each other in college or that you would spend the night at my apartment? Or did we go to your place?" Veronica asked, shifting in her seat to get a better look at Liam.
"We didn’t start to live together until we were out of college. You didn’t want to give up your first apartment. We had nights of me staying at your place and you coming to mine but your visits to mine were less. I don’t know who you thought you would run into. I lived alone in my apartment back then," Liam answered.
"And the house? We had it after we got married?"
"Yes. It was time to move out of apartments then and with me taking over from my father, it was quiet for us to move a little bit out of the city. Anything else you want to know?" Liam asked, ready to answer more about their pasts.
"Where did you propose to me?" Veronica questioned.
"At the beach, I almost lost the ring in the water. It would have been the day I became a fish to find that ring before you arrived."
Veronica covered her mouth as she laughed. "I don’t know about the past me but I would have laughed and helped you find it."
"I am positive you would have laughed at me and found a pair of goggles to get in that water," Liam laughed along with Veronica.
"So, am I only afraid of going on boats?" Veronica asked as from his answer, it sounded like she wasn’t afraid to go in the water.
"You wouldn’t go beyond where you couldn’t see your knees. You’ve only sat in the jacuzzi at home and we keep the pool covered for most of the year. We were thinking of getting rid of it to put something we would use," Liam explained.
"I wonder, did I almost drown in the past? What was I so afraid of? I would like to get over that fear now. If I knew how to swim then maybe my situation would be a little bit better. Isn’t there a relative I can ask about my past?" Veronica wondered since her mother was useless.
It would be hard to tell which story her mother gave her was real or fake.
"There wasn’t that I knew. You never introduced me to anyone," Liam replied.
"So, I was all alone. I want to go to the art gallery tomorrow to see how it is. I want to start seeing the things that I love instead of having to hear about my old conflicts with people. Then, if you are not too busy I can bring lunch to you. I want to see where you work. Can I?" Veronica asked, squeezing his hand without realising.
She just wanted to be out of their home.
"I will make time for you but before you go to the art gallery, you need to go to an appointment with your doctor. I will go with you and then go back to work," Liam said, making note of this in his head.
He only had plans to attend a meeting and then return home to work from there but with Veronica wanting to bring him lunch, he could go to the office for a few hours until she arrived.
"Thank you. A man like you must be busy as is. That woman that ran out to us, what does she do?" Veronica asked her curiosity at its limit. "Do you send out invitations for your employees to attend the event?"
"She’s in the legal team and my father is the one who makes sure that employees from all the family businesses are present at his events. Who attends changes every year. Why? Does she seem familiar?" Liam asked, trying to recall in his head how many conversations she had with Nora.
Veronica shook her head. "No. I was just curious. I would have seen her if I visited your office in the past."
Veronica wanted to ask if Nora liked him but didn’t. He might not have noticed it and if there was nothing there, she didn’t want to have him be weird to his employee all because it seemed like she was jealous.
’I have to get used to this,’ Veronica thought.
There were going to be women all around Liam because of his wealth and good looks but she shouldn’t jump to think they wanted to be with him or Liam wanted to be with them. She didn’t know if Nora had come with a date or was already married.
She wished Beth wouldn’t have thrown that in her face like she knew something.
Veronica looked out the window at the city still busy at this hour. Rather than thinking about anyone else, she would enjoy ice cream and get to know more about her husband.
