The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 33
Chapter 33: Chapter 33
"After all the money I spent on her, this is the thanks I get?" Henry asked, furious with the position he was in now.
He hadn’t considered Liam would be so interested and petty enough to buy the building. Now, everything he worked for was going down the drain, and there wasn’t another building he could afford to get.
"Thank you," Liam mockingly thanked Henry. "I am just curious. How much money are you going to ask your niece’s husband for? You are acting like this is the old days when men paid for their wives."
"Beth is my niece. Why would I ask her husband for money?" Henry replied. He didn’t share any blood with Veronica. She was a package he didn’t know about until after he was deep into his relationship with Evelyn.
"When you married Veronica’s mother, you took some responsibility for her as her stepfather. That money you spent on her was your choice so don’t be going around saying you are owed something. You sound stupid," Liam said.
Liam entertained himself with Veronica’s hand as he spoke.
Evelyn agreed with Liam but she couldn’t have her husband embarrassed like this. "We just needed help but each chance you get to make us suffer, you take it. You forget that we raised the woman you loved. Would it kill you to treat us a little better?"
"It might," Liam replied. He didn’t have it to be kind to the Harpers with what he knew. "I know how she lived there. Since you enjoy doing so many interviews, should I start talking too?"
Evelyn bit her lip. Again, she knew that Veronica told Liam about daily matters. What happened in the family should stay in the family.
’And what about her life was bad?’ Evelyn wondered.
Veronica had a childhood Evelyn would kill for. What about Veronica’s childhood? Was it so bad that Liam was being this way?
’He doesn’t know what she had before to realise this was better,’ Evelyn knew. Should Veronica ever get the chance to be a mother, she would then understand that life wasn’t so bad in the past. Sacrifices had to be made for them to survive.
"Sugarplum, was it that you wanted more of my love?" Evelyn shifted the conversation to Veronica. "I had a troubled past with my mother so I don’t understand how to be a good mother. You’ll understand me when your time comes."
’Is she saying that I will continue the curse of being a bad mother?’ Veronica wondered, hoping it wasn’t so. How crazy was her mother?
"How many times must you be told that you and Veronica are not the same? The way you are as a mother is because of your greed. You forgot about your child because you were so busy raising Beth to please him," Liam pointed out the truth.
He had witnessed it. He had seen how Evelyn went all out for Beth while not recalling the day her child was born. All those celebrations had to be planned by him and it was up to him to help Veronica forget that her mother was busy raising someone else and her father was nowhere to be found.
"That is not true. I love my daughter," Evelyn said, refusing to let Liam make her out to be a monster before the few people watching. "You’ve gotten into her head with all these lies. Tell her the truth that she wanted to fix her relationship with me."
"Enough!" Veronica couldn’t take any more of this.
There was a small crowd growing, laughing and gossiping amongst themselves. This wasn’t what she was here for. To put on a show for the people around them.
"We should go, Liam. I want to have some water to drink. If we talk to them any longer, my night will be ruined. Ready?" Veronica asked, tugging on his hand so he would come along whether he was ready or not.
Liam happily agreed to leave since Veronica turned out to be the one holding his hand. The party sounded like a headache at first but there were little things to enjoy. First her jealousy and now this.
Henry didn’t want the two to leave yet but he was mindful of the people coming to watch that. "That girl hasn’t lost her memories. That same attitude is there."
"Or her memories are gone but the way she treats us is still there. I don’t believe she has her memories back but I am confused by why he allowed her to come here. She’ll be questioned from beginning to end. I am bored," said Evelyn.
"Then go chat with the other women. Make friends with the socialites here," Henry said, preferring she is out of her face now.
"No, I am bored of you keep bringing up that you spent money on her. Can’t you find something else to demand money for? It doesn’t look good for you to be shouting that you raised her. We have to think about how we look," Evelyn said, embarrassed by how he confidently spoke about wanting that money back.
"Have you drunk too much? I have spent a lot of money on you two. I would ask you to give me that money back but I know you would just reach into my pockets to get it. I am asking for less than I spent on her. I don’t have time for this. I need to stop him from getting that building," said Henry.
"Well, if you hadn’t run and told him about it the building would still be for sale. You’re not going to get that from under Liam Sterling. Forget about the building for now and keep the money you gathered for it. There are plenty of buildings all over the town. Let’s get another," Evelyn said, secretly happy they wouldn’t lose their money.
"You don’t understand," Henry turned his back to Evelyn. He was counting big on that building.
"Obviously I don’t when my husband won’t tell me what’s important about the building," Evelyn replied, once again annoyed. ’Should I buy it?’ She considered.
She had enough money stored away over the years. Since these two men were so interested in it, it had to be worth something grand in the future. It would be a nice gift to herself to keep from Henry.
"Do as you want," Evelyn said, fixing his shirt as he spoke. "I have some old friends to catch up with and they are going to start speaking about the donations. Remember, anything less than ten grand is shameful. Make a good donation."
