The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 32
Chapter 32: Chapter 32
"You should be careful how you treat me. I am still your mother and one day if that man stops backing you, you will only have me to run back to. I have a kind heart to take you in again," said Evelyn.
Veronica scoffed. She knew little but the one thing she knew was that her mother was counting on her death. "You have a kind heart? You didn’t want me to wake up."
"Don’t say that. They were already talking like you were dead. I already went through the stages of preparing to let go of you. When I saw you wake up, I was mad at the doctors for making me think I was losing you. I don’t want you to die. You came from me," Evelyn said, taking a step forward to embrace Veronica.
Veronica stepped back.
Who was her mother trying to fool?
"I know you. I know what you are like so don’t try to play these games with me," Veronica said, hoping the act on her mother’s part ended now.
Evelyn smiled, seeing right through Veronica. "You know, as much as you hated me, I can’t think of a time when you didn’t call me mother. You still don’t have your memories, do you?
"Why should I call you mother when you are part of the reason why I almost died? Thanks to that little family you have now, I could have been the star of a funeral. All you had to do was give up your daughter and then-"
"That is not true!" Evelyn argued. She had her ways but she wasn’t so low down to try killing her daughter. "We have our differences but you are my child. I was heartbroken when I heard the news. I called Henry right away."
"Maybe you were heartbroken for a second but then you were happy to think about what money I might have left behind for you. It must have hurt you to learn I wasn’t leaving you a dime. Still, you would see what you could get off my name. You are no mother to me," Veronica said, preferring not to address Evelyn as so.
"You have it all wrong. I know you don’t have your memories, Veronica. He described me that way to keep us away from each other. We were fixing our relationship, so you started reaching out to me, and I can prove it. He isn’t telling you everything sugarplum," Evelyn said, once again trying to get closer to Veronica.
Veronica didn’t trust Evelyn. What she had been reaching out for could have been for anything. "I don’t care about the past. What I know is that my mother didn’t want me to wake up. That she cuddled someone else like that was her daughter. Are you happy? I want to know if after the way you have treated me you are happy."
Evelyn placed her hands on her hips and turned around to back Veronica. "I have made so many sacrifices for you and you have never been grateful. Had I not married Henry then I wouldn’t be able to offer you the life you had."
"Has it never occurred to you that maybe I would have wanted a more simple life with my mother? You should have just asked. You need to be honest that you chased after what you wanted. You wanted this life," Veronica accused Evelyn.
"And what if I did? Can’t I dream of something more than slaving away at a job that doesn’t care for me and then coming home to take care of a child that I," Evelyn paused, realising she was going too far.
Veronica knew where her mother was going with what she said. "Say it. I have already felt that you were burdened with taking care of me. No need to hold back now. You’ve already gone too far by wishing for my death. I hope Beth makes you happy."
Veronica continued, "I hope when you look at her, you know you made the right decision to give me up. I won’t give you any money. I know that is what you are here for and I don’t have it to give."
"Henry is the one who wants money. He took care of you from the moment I introduced you to him and now, he wants what he spent back. I don’t want to be standing here just so you know," said Evelyn.
It was embarrassing to stand before her daughter and do this. Begging was not something that Evelyn enjoyed doing and it was starting to get under her skin that Henry was making her do this.
"Then, you should have told your husband this is wrong and not show up before me. As soon as I was of age to take care of myself, I left," Veronica said, repeating what Liam told her. "I got myself a small apartment, found scholarships to help with my tuition, and worked. I don’t owe you for when you took care of a child."
"Veronica," Evelyn sighed. "If you just do this one thing then we won’t have any reason to bother you. Your father just wants to buy this one building and then, we are all set. Just do this for me after everything I did for you. The good is far more than the bad. I promise you."
Veronica smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes. "No. Find another way to get it. Oh wait, there are countless interviews you’ve done about me. Those should have paid you well."
’How did she know?’ Evelyn thought. Other than the small few she did when walking around, the others were anonymous. ’Is he looking into us?’
"I am giving you one last chance to mean something to me. Did you play a role in what happened to me or know if someone else in the Harper family did something?" Veronica asked, giving her mother a single chance though she did not deserve it.
"I didn’t try to kill my daughter and the others are innocent. It is wrong of you to put your fall on us. You hated going on boats so why did you go on one? You need to start thinking about all the people you angered because the list is long Veronica. You got too cocky over the years," said Evelyn.
"No. I married a man all of you didn’t think I could and started to think I was cocky when I only wanted to be left alone. They all think I don’t fit in. You birthed me so where do you think they will place you?" Veronica asked, noticing the faintest shock on her mother’s face.
Had her mother not considered that everyone else looked down on her as well? They weren’t born into money and it wasn’t like her mother had some good job to make her name worth something. She prided herself as a housewife and once in a while, an actress no one knew nothing about.
"Don’t get started with saying you were an actress. No one knows your name or your work. You’re judged the same way I am, which is ridiculous since I worked for something. Please leave me alone. I won’t be giving you any money. Excuse me, I need to get back to my husband," Veronica said.
Veronica wanted to leave but Evelyn blocked her path.
"Get out of my way," Veronica told Evelyn.
"I need that money. I am giving you the chance to get rid of Henry going to your husband. Your husband is worth millions so what we are asking for won’t put a dent into his pockets. This is the account number," Evelyn said, opening her small bag for her phone.
"You!"
"Henry?" Evelyn turned around, confused as to why she heard her husband’s voice. "Henry!" She yelled after hearing his voice again and other commotion.
Veronica followed Evelyn since Liam was meant to be outside. Now was not the time for Liam to get into any conflict with Henry when all the reporters were present and so many people were taking photos of them.
"Henry!"
Evelyn blocked Veronica’s view of what was happening outside the door but when Evelyn moved, Veronica saw how Henry was held back by a man she didn’t know and Liam was fixing his suit.
"What happened?" Evelyn asked, angry that Henry was making a fool of himself and her as well at this party. "You better have a good reason for doing this," she whispered.
Henry angrily pointed at Liam whose smile pissed him off even more. "He started going ahead to buy the building. He’s already made the offer."
"What?" Evelyn turned to Liam. "Why would you have any interest in buying that building?"
"It is a good investment," Liam replied. He walked to Veronica to check that she was fine. "Are you alright?"
"I am," Veronica nodded her head. "We just talked and then I heard him yelling. You really bought it?"
"The process has started. I should tip your stepfather for the heads up about it. Wouldn’t have known about it without him," Liam said, further adding to Henry’s anger.
