Chapter 34: Chapter 34

"When does the staring stop?" Veronica asked, trying her best to avoid locking eyes with the people staring at them.

"When we get into our car and go home. Just look at me. Aren’t I better to look at than them?" Liam questioned.

Veronica laughed. He was better to look at but she wouldn’t tell him now to fuel his ego. Something told her that she wouldn’t hear the end of this tonight.

"What did you talk about with your mother? Did she ask for money or the building?" Liam asked, curious about what the two spoke about.

"It was about money and something about how I was trying to fix my relationship with her. I don’t have any emails to my mother so it had to be messages on my phone. Isn’t there a way for me to get all the information from my old phone and put it on the new one?" Veronica asked.

That would solve all of her problems.

"I have tried that. I tried to log in on the cloud you had everything backed up on but the password was changed. I am paying someone to get us past that. I was going to tell you when it is done," Liam said, hoping she didn’t think he was keeping secrets again.

"Okay," Veronica replied.

That was taken care of so she could focus on other things until he got the old messages.

"I don’t know how best to explain it but when I was talking to my mother, I was repeating what I learned from you. There was this feeling of anger growing inside me like I had some things from the past that I wanted to say. As if my memories were right there and I was ready to burst to stop her lies," Veronica said, trying her best to explain.

"So, all we need to do is have you speak to your mother and your memories will come back? I don’t know how I feel about this but it’s worth a try letting your mother make a fool of herself," Liam replied.

"I doubt that is the answer but the more things I face, the more I get this feeling like everything I know is right there and all I have to do is reach out to get it. I want my memories back now. I’m worried about having a moment when I don’t even remember coming back from the hospital or who you are," Veronica shared her fears.

What was stopping her from forgetting everything that she knew now?

"Then I will tell you who you are and what I am to you if you forget. It would be a second chance for me to do it the right way. If you forget again, I will be right here and with a better hospital to keep your family. Trust me," Liam lifted her hand to kiss it.

"You need to stop doing this," Veronica muttered.

"Why? Are you afraid of falling in love with me again? It scared me at first that you don’t remember me but I am starting to enjoy this opportunity to have you fall in love with me again. I’ve done it before and I am positive that I can do it again," Liam said, already having a plan in mind.

"You are going to enjoy making your wife fall in love with you? At least one of us is having some fun. This party is starting to bore me. This isn’t the night out for fun I was looking forward to. If you are ready to leave then I-"

"Good night!" The sound of Adeline’s voice coming out of a microphone sealed the deal that Veronica was ready to leave.

Something bad was coming. Veronica felt it.

"Thank you all for coming to my husband’s annual charity event. So far, we’ve received plenty of donations that pushed us close to our goal. I think last year’s donations might be beaten this year. I want to welcome all my family to the stage with us. Liam?" Adeline purposely picked out her son.

Was Liam still here or did he make a run for it already?

"We should have been faster," Veronica whispered. She didn’t miss how Adeline only called out for Liam. "You can go by yourself. I am not going up there."

Veronica knew that it would make her look like she was not part of the family if she wasn’t present on the stage but she did not mind. Adeline was up to something and Veronica wanted no part in it.

"I am not going," Liam said, his right hand moving to be around Veronica’s waist. He only went to spaces his wife was invited in and like Veronica, he wasn’t interested in his mother’s games.

Liam remained by Veronica’s side as his family joined his mother on stage. All she wanted was a big family photo to add when she broadcasted this charity event. There weren’t many good intentions behind the charity event. His mother knew how to get the public on her side and using his father’s charity event was the way to do it.

Who could dislike her when she was raising so much money to help others? The media was going to eat this up and in the long run, his uncle benefited from it.

Adeline knew her stubborn son wouldn’t come to her. Nothing about him had changed from the time he was a boy when she had to bribe him with something to get him to be active at these events.

"This charity is very special to me. If not for our generous ways, my daughter-in-law Veronica Sterling would not have a way to get herself through college. Knowing her story and how much she had to work along with receiving scholarships pushes me to do this with my husband every year," Adeline shared.

Since Veronica was present, she should be used for a good moment. Veronica had a story that fit the charity event and again made Adeline look good. It was too good to pass up on making herself look good and making a fool of Veronica to let her know her place.

"What the hell is she doing?" Liam asked, annoyed by his mother’s schemes. She was playing with fire and if she thought being his mother meant she wouldn’t get burned, she was wrong.

’If we leave, it will look like we are running from my past but if I stay, Adeline will think she won,’ Veronica considered her options.

"Let’s join your family," Veronica said. She refused to let Adelien think she won anything.
