The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 28
Chapter 28: Chapter 28
Sabrina wasn’t impressed by Veronica. All she saw was a woman pretending to fit in.
Rather than give Veronica a reaction, Sabrina turned to Liam. The red tie he wore showed that Adeline did have someone on the inside to make him match her. It was frustrating to see that Veronica also wore a red dress to match Liam.
Was this spy Adeline had working for both sides? Why would they allow Veronica to leave in a red dress when Liam was meant to match with someone else?
Sabrina reached out to touch Liam’s arm. "I’ve been trying to keep up with all the news since I came back. Are you alright?"
Liam moved his hand to get away from Sabrina’s touch. "I am not the one who ended up in the hospital. It was my wife."
Sabrina placed her hand back at her side, unaffected by Liam not liking her touch. "Still, it must be hard on you. Everyone is worried about Veronica but we have to think about you. There’s only so much you can take alone. If you ever need someone to speak to, I am here for you. My number has not changed."
"The audacity," Veronica thought but it was more than a thought. She mistakenly spoke her thoughts.
"What? Do you find a problem with me wanting to check in on my friend? You already have so many people worried about you. Someone has to worry about him," Sabrina spoke loud enough to catch the reporter’s attention.
Liam didn’t like what was happening on Sabrina’s end. "You-"
"I will check on him. As his wife, I will make sure he is looked after so you don’t need to worry. You will never need to worry about my husband," Veronica replied, lovingly resting her head on Liam’s shoulder.
Veronica wasn’t informed about Sabrina by Liam which meant that she wasn’t important. It just took one look at Sabrina to know she was interested in Liam.
How many women did she need to fight off from her husband?
Liam smiled, enjoying the moment of Veronica staking her claim over him. She had nothing to worry about as Sabrina was just an old friend he grew away from but still, he welcomed seeing this side of her.
It reminded him of Veronica at the early start of their relationship. Veronica in recent years wouldn’t be bothered by another woman’s failed attempt to flirt with him.
"Whatever my mother called you here for, I suggest you forget about it. I am married," Liam reminded Sabrina since she seemed to forget. "We are not children anymore."
Sabrina laughed off what Liam was trying to assume. "I was only being a good friend. I don’t know Veronica well so excuse me if I come off as a little rude but I am worried about everything you have on your shoulders Liam."
She continued, "Your mother wanted me to play mediator for the two of you but you know I don’t like it. I should get inside. I will see you before the party ends."
Veronica watched as Sabrina walked away without sparing her a glance. She didn’t believe the excuse Sabrina gave. "She’s in love with you."
"I know," Liam replied. "She told me when we were younger. After high school, Sabrina and I drifted away from each other but still spoke if I saw her around. I wanted a friend and she wanted something more."
"I am starting to think this over. Why out of all the men in the city did I go after one with so much attention? I just can’t understand myself and I don’t like how they take pictures of us just standing here. We should go inside," Veronica said, wanting to get away from the reporters.
What story were they going to spin tomorrow after seeing them standing with Sabrina?
Veronica forgot to stop to have her pictures taken by the red carpet and led Liam right inside.
Adeline took it as purpose work. She asked one little thing from Veronica and now she had to pick from the other photos taken of the couple to use. "Let this night end fast."
Adeline lost interest in standing outside. Her plan was spoiled and seeing that Veronica was here, she had to keep an eye on her to make sure Veronica did nothing to embarrass the family.
Again.
"Mr. Sterling."
"Mr. Sterling, I have been meaning to speak to you."
"She’s walking around."
Veronica heard a mixture of greetings to Liam and gossip about herself followed by laughter. She inspected the party which was for charity.
Wasn’t there more money spent on what everyone wore? Shouldn’t they come in simple attire and donate the money they spent on dressing up tonight?
Veronica did not understand these people and she was only here for less than a minute.
It was strange how they judged her but their actions didn’t match how they prided themselves to be.
Before they pointed their fingers at her and whispered about how she didn’t belong next to Liam they should take a long look in the mirror and realise their money didn’t make them any better than her.
"Son!" An older man bearing similarity in looks to Liam greeted the pair.
Veronica was surprised that instead of going to Liam, she was greeted with a hug first.
"Thank goodness you woke up," said Nathan Sterling, Liam’s father. "Were you trying to kill me with that news? What were you doing out on the water? We had a good talk about why you shouldn’t go on a boat."
Veronica was yet to come over the shock of the man she knew to be Liam’s father hugging her and then scolding her like she was his daughter. The greeting was different from how Adeline approached her. It was genuine and quite true that she had won over Liam’s father.
’Shouldn’t his father be harder to please than his mother?’ Veronica thought. What was this strange turn of events?
"I don’t know what I was thinking," Veronica replied.
"Are you trying to kill her? Why would you hug her so tightly?" Liam questioned his father.
"Son," Nathan grabbed Liam’s shoulder. "With all the work done to end this marriage, you should be thanking me for showing that I like her. Don’t look so grumpy for the rest of the party. I need to get at least one picture of you smiling to post wherever it is people post on these days."
"Save your conflict with others for another time and don’t ruin the party. There is my wife. The person behind all of this," Nathan said, forcing his way through Veronica and Liam to get to Adeline.
"Has your father always liked me?" Veronica asked, curious about Nathan. He was more uppity than she imagined.
"No. I put him in a position where he had no choice but to accept you. It was either he welcomed you or I walked away from what he prepared me for. He’s a smart man," Liam replied.
’Or maybe he didn’t think he’d be putting up with me this long,’ Veronica considered.
