Chapter 29: Chapter 29

"We’re all together again. We’ll need a group photo by the end of the night so I need you two to not try running off secretly like you always do. Veronica," Nathan shifted his focus back to her. "I heard you might have lost your memories. Is it true?"

"Why would you want to discuss something like that here instead of privately? We should be focused on the charities you are trying to help," said Liam.

"We are. Speaking of which, we’re funding a scholarship for people who cannot afford to pay their college tuition on their own. Since Veronica has some experience with using a scholarship, I thought it would be good for her to make a speech about how it helped her. Where was it you worked when you studied again?" Adeline asked.

Adeline pretended to think about it. "Was it in a coffee shop on campus or by making deliveries for a restaurant? Or was it both? You had to work so much that it is hard to keep track of everything."

Veronica squeezed Liam’s hand to stop him before he exploded on his mother. "I don’t see why you are trying to look down on me for working so much. It is a problem when I work and don’t work. What do you want from me?"

"To leave my son," Adeline answered.

"Enough," Liam spoke up. "We’ve only been here for a few minutes and you’ve managed to ruin the party. A charity party, mother. Isn’t this one of your displays of you having a good heart? The rotten side is showing."

"Enough of this," Nathan said, stepping in to help Liam. "As the host, we are constantly watched. Be careful."

"Yes, we wouldn’t want anyone to see that the Sterlings aren’t close," Liam replied.

Nathan smiled despite his anger. He had already given Liam what he wanted by not speaking about the marriage they were surprised with. It was Liam’s time to hold up his end of the deal. "All families have their problems. The smart ones try not to let the world see they are feuding."

"I am not the one picking fights. Excuse me," Liam said, taking Veronica away from his parents.

"We’ll talk soon," Nathan informed Veronica.

She wasn’t his choice of what he wanted Liam to have but he was fond of her. Seeing Veronica not bend to his wife or the pressure of the people watching her had always been amusing. Veronica was lasting longer than Nathan had bet.

Nathan watched the couple just as everyone around them was doing. "You said she didn’t have her memories. Something about her is off but if she couldn’t remember, he wouldn’t have brought her here. He’s smarter than that. You invited the Harpers to my party after they fed you the wrong information."

"Her mother looked confident that it was true. She called me again wanting to meet for dinner and told me that she was present in the room when Veronica woke not knowing who she was or Liam when he walked into the room. That whole family is one big act and they are playing with us now," said Adeline.

Adeline didn’t know what to believe. Evelyn could have been in on Veronica’s plans all this while. "I will have a guard escort them out quietly. It’s about time they learn their place and why not lie to me."

"I don’t think they lied to you dear," Nathan said, taking a glass from a passing waiter. "She normally hugs me right away. She didn’t and he got me off her fast like I was a stranger in her space. There might be some truth to the memory loss. Let her continue her little act a while longer."

"I would enjoy it if you would be on my side with this. You don’t want him married to her just like I don’t," Adeline said, puzzled by how long Nathan would continue his act.

"I also can’t have my son walk away from his seat after all the tension these days. Aren’t you the one who says sacrifices must be made? I let him have the woman he wanted and he built my empire. It’s a sacrifice I have to make. You’re disappointing me a little with how long it’s taken to move her," Nathan said, touching Adeline’s cheek lovingly for all around to see.

"You could have fooled me that you care for her," Adeline said, surprised that he was waiting for her. "You made me look like a bad parent."

Nathan chuckled. "You are a bad mother. You got it from your mother and misunderstood me. I do like her and want the best for her but not right there with my son. Fix it before your father and brother start to bother me. I am close to stopping endorsing them."

"You wouldn’t do that. Not if you want me to make your life hell," Adeline threatened Nathan. She hooked her arm with his so they could walk together.

"Is it not that already?" Nathan joked.

Away from the two, Liam found a quiet space for Veronica to take a breather.

"How are you fairing? Ready to leave?" Liam asked. He certainly was ready to go.

Liam could count on one hand how many people cared about the charity but not how many were just here for appearance’s sake.

"That wasn’t enough to make me want to head home already. Is it that you are ready to go? I thought you would last a little longer than this," Veronica said and then thought of ways to help calm him down.

"My patience is thinner when it comes to you. The charities are for a good cause but this is a look-at-me party with them trying to win over the public. They have to go this far to look kind. I’m sorry about the comments she made earlier," Liam apologised in his mother’s stead.

"Why? I am not embarrassed that I had to work to survive. I don’t understand how they are trying to belittle me. Is it that I am a gold-digging woman who uses you for money or are they judging me for knowing I had to work to eat? It is funny," Veronica laughed.

Her life was like one big drama show. Instead of trying to understand these people, Veronica wanted a pen and piece of paper to write down all the events so far to make a show in the future. When her life was this dramatic it was worth making money off of.

"Good to see you are in good spirits," Liam replied, willing to stay a little longer to please Veronica.
