Chapter 27: Chapter 27

A day later, many of the city’s elite families gathered for the charity party.

"Adeline!" Sabrina loudly greeted the woman soon to be her mother-in-law.

Sabrina wore a stunning red dress which was to match the red she wanted Liam to wear.

Adeline greeted Sabrina with a hug. "Not so loud," she touched her right ear.

This was a party, not a circus.

Sabrina was a little too excited right now.

"Sorry," Sabrina apologised, tapping her mouth. "The party looks far better than it did last year. I might be so generous to donate even more than I planned to. I had to get away from my father’s boring talk with your brother."

"Boring talk?" Adeline questioned, searching for her brother. It was better for Sabrina’s father to speak to her. "Men," she laughed, holding Sabrina’s hand for the reporters to see. "You need to have some photos taken right here. The red carpet was made just for you."

"Was it really?" Sabrina replied, tucking her hair behind her ear.

Adeline listened closely to the chatter around them. It was expected for the reporters to be confused by their closeness. "Go," she pointed to the red carpet where guests were to have their photos taken.

All Adeline needed was for Liam to show up to have him stand beside Sabrina.

He almost disappointed her again by saying he would not be coming to the party but then at the very last moment to change his mind he did.

’He didn’t reach out to me,’ Adeline thought, remembering how rude it was for Liam to reach out to her husband when she was the one who handled most of the planning.

Sabrina noticed Adeline lost in thought so she held out her hand for Adeline to join her. "I should take one photo with the host. Right, mother?"

The nickname for Adeline made the chatter increase with Sabrina questioned about how close she was to Adeline.

Sabrina purposely started a fire to get the reporters interested in how close she was to the Sterlings. It shouldn’t be too hard to find out that the two families had been close over the years.

Adeline knew to act in the moment since there were many eyes on them. She accepted Sabrina’s hand and joined her to have a photo taken. It was time Sabrina started to be seen more with the family.

Sabrina leaned her head onto Adeline’s shoulder to show how close they were. How many other women in the city would be so bold to do this? She could when she had Adeline on her side.

"What are you doing?" Sabrina questioned the reporters when they took their focus off of her.

What was more important than snapping the moment of her being with Adeline? A popular model and Adeline were more important than anyone else.

Adeline kept her smile since there were still a few reporters snapping photos but it almost fell when she saw Liam. Her son had to have lost his mind to bring Veronica with him. Shouldn’t Veronica be at home? For someone who almost died, Veronica looked lively.

"Why is she here?" Sabrina whispered to Adeline. Wasn’t Liam to be coming alone? ’You said-"

"I know what I said but you questioning me like this doesn’t bring any answers," Adeline snapped.

This went against her plans for the night. What made Sabrina think she was happy to see Veronica? Adeline shared Sabrina’s confusion.

Still, Adeline smiled and approached the couple as they made their way toward the carpet. There was still a show going on here and she would not be portrayed as the bad guy.

"Liam," Adeline greeted her son with open arms. "You came just in time."

Even with the tension between them, Adeline trusted Liam knew better than to ignore her with so many eyes on him. Not if he wanted to damage the image carefully built up.

Liam stopped before one of his mother’s hands could touch him. Again with the act. When would she grow tired of putting on an act for the city to think she was this wonderful woman who cared for others?

Liam’s right arm remained around Veronica’s waist and the other he didn’t bother to make seem busy. "Mother."

Adeline couldn’t let him shame her so she stepped forward to hug him. It was awkward but showed that she had no hard feelings for her son.

Veronica noticed how Adeline refused to spare her even the smallest glance and for that, Veronica didn’t think of properly addressing Adeline. She knew enough from Liam teaching her to be ready for Adeline’s games.

Adeline stepped back, reluctantly turning to Veronica. "You are alive. I didn’t know what we would have done if you hadn’t woken up."

"You would have celebrated," Veronica replied.

Adeline didn’t have an answer right away. The usual hostility was there which was surprising considering Evelyn said Veronica didn’t have her memories.

Was that a lie or had Liam filled Veroncia’s head with stories?

"You don’t look like the news reporters are portraying you. You have people worrying about you all for nothing. I hope the attention was worth it," Adeline said, believing the gossip that this was all for show.

What did Veronica want from Liam that he didn’t give her? Was it a large amount of money so she pulled this stunt?

"Mother," Liam sent a warning.

Adeline couldn’t pull herself to hug Veronica even with reporters nearby. She had her limits. "You should walk the carpet to take pictures and then join me to see your father. For some reason, he has been excited to see her."

Veronica didn’t know what to make of Adeline so far. She didn’t get to see the full Adeline as it was obvious she was playing for the cameras around.

Veronica clung to Liam, using him as support to walk without falling. There were too many flashes making it hard to see. How were they so used to this? She thought this treatment was reserved for celebrities like actors but the city seemed quite interested in her husband.

"Liam."

Veronica’s attention was stolen by the woman blocking their way to have their pictures taken. The woman in front of them had her eyes set on Liam and looked almost disappointed to see he was not alone.

Veronica tightened her hold on Liam to get the woman’s attention. Where were manners these days? How did anyone think it was fine to stare so lovingly at another woman’s husband?

Sabrina wanted Veronica to disappear. This was a party for a special group of people so why did Veronica come? "Mrs. Sterling. You look fitting of the part."

"I could say the same to you," Veronica replied.
