The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 143
Chapter 143: Chapter 143
After a few days of being out of sight, Veronica and Liam ended their vacation to return home to get back to their daily lives. They were welcomed by a few reporters who wanted to hear Liam’s thoughts about Benjamin to see if he was one of the few relatives on Benjamin’s side or to get his thoughts about the investigation to find Vance Smith.
Liam ignored their questions and drove the car right in to get Veronica inside so she wouldn’t be bothered by them.
"So much for a quiet return. If only we could have stayed away for another day," said Veronica.
She started to regret being the one who said they should return so Liam could get back to his work and she could go to the gallery.
"I will take out the bags. Edna should be inside already."
Veronica looked ahead at where their gates were now closed but there were still reporters outside trying to take pictures of them. They were out of luck since the garage door was coming down to hide Liam and Veronica from their prying eyes.
"We’ve never come out to speak about the Smiths so why do they think we will suddenly have something to say? Are they hoping you go on a rant about your uncle? Good luck with that," Veronica said, knowing Liam would never be so comfortable speaking about his family affairs to the public. "I’m going to let Edna know we’re here and then come back to help you."
Liam opened the trunk where the three bags they packed were placed. "I can take them out myself. You can go inside and get a drink."
"I would argue with you to let me help but I’m going to enjoy this princess treatment a little longer," Veronica replied.
"Princess?" Liam asked, puzzled by why she chose a princess. "Why not a queen treatment? You’re old enough to be a queen."
Veronica frowned. "Rude. I have a feeling you’re not picturing me as some young queen who rose to the throne quickly. Besides, being a queen is much more responsibility than being a princess. Don’t open the garage door and sneak out to scare anyone. Those reporters will take anything you do and make it a headline."
Veronica trusted Liam not to go outside now so she headed inside to find Edna. While she enjoyed the peace they had when no one knew where they went, Veronica couldn’t deny that she missed being at home.
"Oh!" Edna exclaimed, startled by Veronica walking around. "I must have missed the sound of the garage door opening. Welcome home! I will get started on something for you to eat."
"No, no. We ate before we came back. I’m sorry about all the noise outside. Were you able to make it inside without them harassing you?" Veronica asked.
"I had a good grip on my bag so I swung it when they got close. They should be ashamed of themselves for crowding me like that. I was just trying to get to my job and I know they were just doing their job but they shouldn’t bother someone like that. I’m fine," Edna said, but she appreciated Veronica’s concern.
Edna had something else to say but she hesitated at first. Since it would come up at some point, she decided to mention it. "I saw the statement that was put out. It’s not going to affect you, is it?"
"You mean from Adeline? No," Veronica shook her head. "It was a surprising turn of events that she was so quick to come out to sort of scold Benjamin and let it be known that she was going to do the best she could to get him some help. To the public, she looks like a good sister. Add her tears about her father’s disappearance and the public is feeling sorry for her."
Veronica didn’t understand how Adeline managed to gain sympathy but she did it. After seeing how much support the public had for Adeline trying to fix her family, Veronica was ready to see the announcement that Adeline was going to take Benjamin’s place. In a surprising turn of events, Adeline announced that the Smiths were done being involved in anything political.
"I haven’t talked to her in a long time," Edna shared. "I won’t do it again."
"You’ve already promised that you wouldn’t and I believe you. You’ll not be the last person trying to be that bridge but just remember that you are an employee for us. I would hate to lose you," Veronica said since she had become so attached to Edna.
"You won’t," Edna promised. She had to learn the hard way that this wasn’t her family and she overstepped before. It was lucky that she still had her job. "Have you seen the news about your family?"
Veronica smiled. "I haven’t missed a report about it. I think it is wrong for a drunk driver to just get a fine and a little time spent in jail. Her uncle is pushing that she didn’t kill anyone but someone is claiming they were hit so they would sue. I don’t think they have the money for the suit."
Veronica wondered if it was her father’s doing or Liam’s that Henry seemed to have made a very bad investment. ’Where did he even get money from?’ Veronica wondered.
From what Liam was able to find out, Henry found a deal which was too good to pass up and seeing that he couldn’t rely on the dealership to make him money, he invested in a business which unfortunately crashed before it was able to get up and running. Now it was a struggle to get back his money.
"On the bright side, her social media presence is ruined so she can’t go back to that. She would be stupid to try being an influencer again after all the uproar about her getting a slap on the wrist. They all deserve it," Veronica said, not feeling sorry for anyone.
It wasn’t that long ago that none of them felt sorry for her.
It was interesting how quickly life changed and now they were the ones who had to be feeling like their lives were over.
"You two have so many people you know in the news these days. I hope it doesn’t affect you too much," Edna said, worried about the pair.
"It won’t. What they have done has nothing to do with us. They are just getting what they deserve. I should put on the news to see what’s the newest update. Do you mind keeping an eye on Liam? Those reporters are going to keep poking and wake a beast," said Veronica.
