Chapter 142: Chapter 142

Liam was glued to his phone in between his time watching as Veronica made herself more comfortable in the pool. It was an eventful day with the first video of his uncle being spotted since the news about his addiction came out.

What surprised Liam was there not being a single article about his grandfather missing. He knew the Smiths hated bad press but was it really smart to try hiding the fact that none of them could find Vance?

The calls from his grandmother were expected since he would be suspected of someone who had something to do with the disappearance. Liam gave an honest answer that he had been away from his home with his wife. The cameras around should back up his claim.

He was then questioned about having something to do with Benjamin’s downfall. The Smiths were making it clear that they suspected he was after them but then their suspicion turned to someone else.

"She’s been quiet," Liam said, his finger hovering over his mother’s number. He didn’t plan to call to see if they were safe and he had his mother blocked so she couldn’t reach out to him but it hadn’t stopped her from finding other ways in the past.

Adeline had become the second suspect since she cut ties with the family and ran off at the perfect time when she was needed.

Rather than acknowledge how many people they had pissed off over the years, the Smiths were pointing fingers at each other.

Veronica leaned over the side of the pool to get a better look at Liam. "I won’t be upset if you want to call your father to know if he is fine or if someone approached him. Your relationship isn’t the best but it’s normal for you to be worried. You could even call your mother."

"Will you call your mother?" Liam asked, knowing the answer already.

Veronica laughed. "Why would I? So I can hear her beg for money or to send away my father? I can’t take any more of that so if she’s calling for my help she won’t be able to get it. I don’t want her dead. She wasn’t the best mother but to kill her isn’t the answer. I just don’t want to see her."

"Your mother doesn’t want to see me and I don’t want to see her so we can exist like that by not bothering each other. I don’t mind if you want to go see them just know that I won’t be there. I’m tired of playing pretend even with your father. He was nice but I always knew it because he didn’t want you to abandon the business," said Veronica.

When the other Sterlings hadn’t been so welcoming, Nathan’s love to make Liam happy was nice but she didn’t need that anymore.

"I’m not planning on going to see them. I’m just curious about what is being said. Normally my grandfather would have her clean up Benjamin’s mess but nothing has happened so far. I’m a little curious if she will stab him in the back to take his spot, help him, or turn away from the Smiths for good," said Laim.

Now that Liam mentioned it, Veronica was curious about Adeline’s decision. "She doesn’t have her father to control her anymore but you said your father doesn’t want her to get involved in politics. I don’t see her helping Benjamin so it’s the other two outcomes."

"Their marriage is on the line and my father seems pretty certain about divorce. My mother is so unpredictable that I don’t know if she would make the right choice. Taking Benjamin’s spot is something she has wanted for years. To get it, she’ll lose my father," Liam said, hoping his mother could finally open her eyes.

"I didn’t know you cared this much about their marriage. You always said they need to figure it out and not bother you," Veronica said, pleasantly surprised to see Liam thinking about it so much.

"It’s their marriage so they do need to figure it out. What I am concerned about is the two of them reaching out to me with complaints about the other. They’ll forget that we aren’t close and look to me to pick a side. They’ve almost split up before and I had to suffer," Liam said, mostly concerned about himself.

Veronica laughed since this was more like Liam. She hoisted herself up to be out of the pool. "They sure will try to badmouth each other to you. Well, I would bet your father would try to. Your mother knows it’s pointless to reach out to you. Good luck with it."

Liam frowned. "What do you mean good luck?"

"They are your parents and they don’t like me so what do I have to do if they divorce? It’s for their son to deal with so good luck to you. I will be here for you when you come home tired. Having a father who can’t show his face and a mother who got kidnapped doesn’t seem so bad now," Veronica joked.

Veronica grabbed a towel to dry herself off with before she sat down beside Liam. "Jerome is leaving today. We’ve got a good four days of peace before anyone discovers where we are. Also, I think I am starting to understand this swimming thing but I am not ready for the sea yet."

Veronica imagined that the waves crashing against her causing water to be in her face wasn’t a step she was ready for but she was slowly overcoming her fear.

"Things are calming down with our life and it’s slowly going back to normal. I don’t spend much time at the gallery now so it would be a good time for us to keep trying to have our first child. How long has the misconception gone on that I can’t have a baby?" Veronica wondered.

It was never that she couldn’t become pregnant but more so that they weren’t ready yet. Rumors flew around fast that she couldn’t have a child so the Sterlings would have to look to another relative to take over the family business after Liam. Even Evelyn had believed it and sent her apologies to Adeline.

Veronica laid back on the lounge chair. "I’m ready to get back into our daily activities. So, whenever you are ready to continue let me know. Wait," she placed her hand on Liam’s chest. "Why are you always so ready to just go? Wait until Jerome is gone. He’s already having a hard time looking me in the eye."

Liam looked up at the door where Jerome would have to come to say goodbye. "I’ll help him load the car. Wait here."

Veronica laughed at how impatient Liam had turned. His concern over his parents’ divorce seemed to be forgotten.
