Chapter 144: Chapter 144

Veronica sat on the couch to watch the news which spoke of Vance’s disappearance. There were assumptions about Vance running away since he couldn’t face the public while others seemed to believe that Benjamin had something to do with it.

Bold claims were being made that could have serious consequences for making them without proof but the Smiths were currently a hot topic so there was a lot to be said.

"I thought you might like this," Edna said, handing Veronica a bowl of cold fruit. "You used to love this."

"I still do," Veronica replied, taking the bowl from Edna’s hands.

Veronica thought about revealing that she had her memories back to those who found out about it because of her mother, but since no one had ever proved that she lost them in the first place, she would stay quiet about it. Even with Edna.

Veronica enjoyed the cold fruit as she watched the news. Seeing all the guesses made about Vance, she started to be curious about where he had been placed after he came across her father but at the same time, she didn’t want to know too much.

’I hope he’s rotting somewhere,’ Veronica thought.

No one in the city should be hoping for his safe return, not even the Smiths in Veronica’s opinion. They knew better about the kind of man Vance was and most were terrified of him from what Veronica was able to witness.

"If it were me, where would I put him? I’d throw him off a boat like he tried to do to me," Veronica said, curious about whether her father would have the same plan.

"It sounds like murder runs in the family," Liam said, alerting Veronica of his presence. "When are you going to get tired of this?" He asked, unamused by what was being shared on the news.

Liam was tired of seeing his mother’s sobbing face over the news pleading for her father’s safe return. He knew that Adeline loved Vance but he was also certain that part of her was relieved that she didn’t have Vance trying to control her anymore.

The acting hadn’t stopped even now at a time like this.

Liam sat down beside Veronica to watch the news just like he had been forced to on other days. He took away a few of the cold slices of apple to eat. "She should have been an actress. It’s not too late for her now."

"I prefer she keeps doing what she does now. After a while, this should blow over and she’ll be off our screen but if she becomes an actress, we might see her more often. I would bet your father would help to make her big," said Veronica.

"Speaking of an actress," Veronica said, now thinking of her mother. "Has my father responded to you yet?"

"No. That number no longer works so my communication with him is done. Unless you go looking for him or your mother again, you will likely hear from him anytime soon. You say you don’t care but you keep asking. Are you secretly planning to look for where they went?" Liam asked, hoping she wouldn’t.

"No. You couldn’t find him so I can’t. There’s no point in looking for either of them so I am just going to let it go for now and wait for when he decides to reach out to me. I think it would have been a fair deal if he sent photos of himself after you sent mine. He’ll have a lot of work to do to make me like him," said Veronica.

Killing Vance and dealing with her mother wasn’t enough to make up for the years he wasn’t around.

"He got you the money back. Your mother must have been furious to have to let go of that money. She might not have anything now," Liam said since Henry didn’t have much to give her in a divorce settlement.

"I don’t have anything I want to do with that money. I’ve already got plenty saved up so maybe I will save it for our children and hand the account over to them when they get older. I know that it’s fine for me to spend it and it came from my father not my mother but I don’t want to use it," Veronica said, not knowing why.

"The time you needed it has already passed and you worked hard to not need money from your parents. You could leave it for someone else to use but I would suggest investing it in something so it can grow over the years. Just don’t take the same advice Henry got," Liam joked.

"Wow," Veronica laughed. "I’ve been wondering if you had something to do with that but then again, he was always so fast to invest in something. The only thing he was right about was the building which is going to work out well for you."

"I should send him flowers to thank him for it again," Liam seriously considered.

"Please don’t send him anything else. He’s a man with nothing to lose so he will come after you if you provoke him. The best thing for him and Beth to do is to get out of the city for now to find somewhere quiet to settle down for a while. We won’t be seeing them for a while," Veronica said, the sudden realisation making her happier than she was before.

"I won’t have to see my mother or those two. Your mother won’t be coming around and most likely not your father. Benjamin has too many problems to come here to see you and you know who is gone," Veronica said, being careful when speaking about Vance around Edna. "Almost all our headaches are gone. There’s always going to be that one person to bother us but for now, we’re good."

"Don’t jinx it," Liam advised Veronica. If they got too comfortable then something was going to creep up on them to ruin their days.

Veronica put the fruit bowl on her lap and used her right hand to hold Liam’s. "The hard part is over with so let me enjoy this. Our lives can go back to normal," she said, making herself comfortable by going to lay on his chest and lifting his arm so it would be around her.

Liam held her just like she wanted and he also wanted. A few weeks ago, she was near but he couldn’t touch her and before that, he received a call that sent his world upside down.

Liam kissed Veronica’s forehead, happy once more that she was safe and sound.

Everything they had to put up with for weeks and even years since meeting each other was finally over.
