The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 136
Chapter 136: Chapter 136
The next day, Liam stood in the kitchen with Jerome who seemed to have something to say but he only stared at Liam.
"Fine. I’ve given you enough time to tell me what’s wrong. What is it?" Liam asked, unable to take any more of Jerome staring at him. "Why do you keep staring at me?"
"I have ears and since you didn’t seem to know last night, they work. My window was also right there. Had I known that was going to be your plan for the night then I would have picked a different room," Jerome said, letting it be known he heard everything.
Liam smiled. He thought of Veronica not being the silent one instead of being embarrassed. "You should have played the radio in your room or get up and go for a walk. We tried not to wake you. I’ll try to be more considerate next time."
"Next time? I would rather there not be a next time. I didn’t leave being with the woman I love to hear you have fun with your wife. See me as your employee while I am here, not your friend," Jerome said. How was he to look Veronica in the eye?
Jerome thought he was lucky that he had not been already awake and looked out the window before he heard the noise.
"It was in the spur of the moment. It won’t happen today. Last night I got a good text which means you might be able to go back home tonight while Veronica and I stayed here. Her father said the job was done so my grandfather must be dead," Liam revealed.
Jerome was surprised that it happened so fast. "Did he share anything else?"
’Of course not. He wants my hands clean, remember? All I know is that he is dead and I was told to delete the message. It’s better this way so I don’t need to worry about covering my tracks when they search for him. I didn’t have to follow the Smith way to get rid of the people I don’t like," Liam said, referring to Vance’s way of making there suddenly be an accident for his enemies.
"Should I find you a bottle of wine to celebrate you didn’t become a murderer? Or should I find a way to send her father a bottle to thank him? I might have become uncomfortable working for a man who I knew took someone’s life. I like that you are all about your work only and besides, as the person always next to you they would question me too," said Jerome.
"You were quite ready to help me plot to kill him," Liam reminded Jerome.
"I was. I owe your wife a lot so I didn’t want him to be around to harm her again. You wouldn’t have given me the chance to work for you if not for her. I got to change my life around and provide for my family. Where else would I find a boss who pays for expensive vacations?"
"That’s not me who suggests those vacations. That’s all Veronica’s doing since she thinks I work you too hard," Liam replied. "Which reminds me. I need to cancel the gift she’s planning for your honeymoon."
Jerome frowned. Some people liked to say that Veronica was the cheap one since she had to work harder for her money and didn’t want to let go of it but Jerome knew the truth. It was Liam who was the cheap one. Liam disliked spending too much money on anyone other than himself or Veronica.
"Is it too late for me to start working for your wife? I hear about the way she treats her staff when they are on vacation and I get jealous. Every day I get closer to sending her an application," Jerome said but he wasn’t serious about it.
"I was just joking with you. You’re not going anywhere. I depend on you too much-"
"Liam!" Veronica’s call for Liam interrupted the conversation.
Liam and Jerome both followed her voice to see what was wrong. Vance was dead but there could have been a hit placed on them before he died.
To their surprise, there wasn’t anyone other than Veronica in the living room.
Still, Liam searched to see what scared her.
"Veronica," Liam tried not to get angry. She scared the hell out of him by making him think there was an intruder inside the home. "What did you scream for?"
"Look," Veronica pointed at the television. "How are you not seeing this?"
Liam only now paid attention to what was being shown on the screen.
"You’re uncle’s world just crumbled," Veronica said, still in disbelief over what was being shown. "I didn’t know there was a plan to go after Benjamin. You left that part out."
Liam looked at Jerome who shook his head. "I’ve gathered evidence of what my uncle does over the years but I wasn’t the one who leaked this. Your father didn’t tell me about it. I thought he was just going after my grandfather."
"I only knew your grandfather was involved. Was your uncle in on it too?" Veronica wondered. She couldn’t think of anything that would put Benjamin as one of the culprits. She only knew that Vance was the one after her. "Why do this instead of killing him too if he was involved?"
Liam was curious about that too. "Maybe my uncle wasn’t involved but he knew something that got him caught up in your father’s plans. Doing this to my uncle is better than killing him. He has to be losing his mind about all of this coming out. My mother has to be losing her mind."
Veronica sat down since she wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while. "For someone who should have a clean record he was doing everything wrong. His wife isn’t going to be happy seeing he is drunk and lying on some lady’s lap. I don’t even know what language he was speaking in the video they showed before."
’Is it alright to show these videos on the news?’ Veronica wondered.
"It’s not a secret that this is what he gets himself into. She must know this is what he does and they have been married for twenty years. There goes his chance to become the mayor. Your father stole all the fun," Liam said, a little disappointed.
"This isn’t some kind of game for who can ruin the Smiths the fastest. This is serious," said Veronica. She hoped Benjamin didn’t think it was them and planned something stupid for revenge. "He deserves this. It’s about time the city saw the real him. Could you imagine what would have happened if the city was run by a drunkard?"
With Vance gone and Adeline not wanting to help her brother, Benjamin would be left to decide everything. The thought alone scared Veronica.
"This makes me think of your mother. Do you think he might go after her?" Veronica questioned, thinking it was possible. Adeline didn’t give her the warmest welcome and always went out of her way to shame her.
"I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see," Liam replied.
The thought of warning his mother someone might be after her didn’t cross his mind. She had the chance to accept the woman he wanted to spend his life with but she chose to come after Veronica every chance she got.
"I would pay to be a fly on the wall wherever your uncle is. He won’t be able to leave his home since the reporters will surround it and if he left it already, he has to find somewhere to hide. He wasn’t as terrible as your mother but we had some run-ins that made me hate him," Veronica said, not feeling sorry for Benjamin.
Veronica didn’t want to let her enjoyment over Benjamin’s downfall show too much since this was still Liam’s family even though he wasn’t close to them. What Veronica had to be concerned about now was the Smiths downfall not affecting Liam.
"We’re lucky that you didn’t show any support for him and you didn’t show up to any of his events. The charity event had been a Sterling event. It should show that you aren’t so close to Benjamin and you weren’t for him running. I wonder how your grandfather is handling this," Veronica said, testing to see if they heard anything about Vance.
"Dead men can’t worry about this. First my grandfather’s disappearance now this is going to shake up the Smiths. My mother will probably have to come to take over like she wanted. The first thing she will do is throw my uncle under a bus to get rid of him. She might not stop until she gets answers about her father,’ said Liam.
Veronica predicted Adeline would think they had something to do with this but it was almost true that they didn’t. "It’s going to be an eventful day. By the way, your phone was ringing in our bedroom after you left. I answered but the person on the other line wouldn’t say anything," she said, finding it strange they didn’t say anything or hand up right away.
"It was an unknown number so I couldn’t tell you who it was. Maybe your uncle is trying to contact you for help or you have some secret plan you are hiding from me."
Veronica would bet it was the latter since the person on the line seemed surprised it was her who answered and didn’t know what to do.
