Chapter 135: Chapter 135

"Why do you put on the television just to ignore it?" Liam asked, puzzled by Veronica’s logic.

"I like the sound that comes from it in the background. It’s always a little too quiet wherever we’re staying," Veronica replied.

Veronica pulled the shirt she had been wearing over her head and was left in her underwear. "I’m going for a swim. I need to continue to overcome my fear."

"You’re going to swim at this hour when the water is cold and outside is too dark to see what’s around you?" Liam asked, seeing it as a bad idea.

"I’m not going for a swim in the sea. I don’t have a death wish. I was going for a late-night swim in the pool outside. It has a heater so I won’t freeze to death. Will you join me for a swim or will you be my lifeguard? It won’t be much swimming since the water isn’t high and I can’t swim. Was it your idea to not fill it all the way?" Veronica inquired.

"It was. Jerome is sleeping so you’ll have to be careful not to wake him but I’ll join you," Liam replied.

The last time Veronica went into a pool she had been pushed. While the traumatic event helped to get back her memories, Liam wasn’t thrilled to see what would come next.

Veronica noticed Liam being wary about her going into the pool. "The water is already low and I will be standing around. I know where my fear of deep water came from. Beth had pushed me off a boat when I was out with her, my mother and Henry. I couldn’t swim well and when I came up no one comforted me. I got blamed for almost taking Beth down with me."

"It’s about time that I learn how to swim so if I am pushed into a pool again, I know how to find my way out and not need you to jump in. If only Jerome wasn’t around then swimming at this hour would have been more fun," Veronica said, leaving it to Liam to get what she was suggesting.

As fun as it would be to swim with less clothing than she was wearing now with only her underwear, Veronica didn’t want to take the chance that Jerome would wake up and see what they were doing. They spent too much time around each other for it to become awkward.

Veronica headed outside first while Liam started to take off the extra clothes he wouldn’t need.

Going close to a pool scared her at times but not as much as going on open water. Veronica could easily sit and place her feet in the water.

"You got me all excited just to sit at the edge?" Liam asked, stopping behind Veronica to wait for her to be the first one to go in.

"I was just wetting my feet first to test if it is warm enough yet. Do you want me to catch a cold by jumping into cold water so fast? It’s good," Veronica said, sliding off the edge to get in the water.

An awful memory popped up making Veronica close her eyes to get rid of it. "Liam!" She exclaimed, surprised by the water splashed on her back.

Liam went to Veronica and lifted her so she would float in his arms. "I can teach you how to swim. You need to get comfortable first. Relax," he guided her.

Veronica found it hard to relax at first since it felt like she could sink under the water at any second despite Liam’s hands being under her.

Instead of thinking about the water, Veronica looked to the sky. It was much prettier here since there were fewer lights from the city to interfere with the view. The sky helped to calm Veronica and soon she floated without noticing that Liam’s hands weren’t holding her up. They were only under her if she panicked.

"This isn’t so bad," said Veronica.

It was peaceful to float in the water and forget about everything else.

"It’s going to be hard to get rid of that memory. I vaguely remember when Beth triggered my fear of deep water but now I have this memory to replace it. I’m going to beat this and by the end of the year, you’ll need to pull me out of the sea because I will like it so much," Veronica said, confident she could do it.

"Should I just buy this home then?" Liam wondered.

"We should," Veronica replied, surprising Liam.

Where was the woman who liked to save?

"It would be a good place for when we need a break. We don’t seem to have any neighbours right now since they are all used as vacation homes. I like it here and I might not want to leave when we have to," Veronica said but she knew she couldn’t.

"We could if you want to. I can work from home most days and it’s not like you are at the gallery every day."

"Your quickness to do what will make me happy is why I love you. We can stay a few more days than we planned but then go back home. Are you not holding me?" Veronica only now realised.

She panicked and tried to sit up which proved to be a bad idea by her going under the water but Liam was quick to lift her.

"Why are you panicking when the water is only to our chest? If you were to somehow drown when all you need to do is stand up, I would be amazed," Liam said, helping Veronica to her feet as he spoke to show her there was nothing to worry about.

"Someone could die in this amount of water-"

"If they are drunk maybe. You are not drunk but I should test it," Liam said, placing his hands on her waist to keep her close to him. He leaned in for a kiss but Veronica leaned back.

Veronica placed her right hand to cover Liam’s mouth. "You’ve used this trick to check if I was drunk before and I fell for it once. We both know that you wouldn’t have let me get in this water if you thought I was drunk. So, if you want to kiss me just do it without a trick."

Veronica looked up at the window which was for the room Jerome was staying in. It was a bad idea to put him there but he liked the view.

"If you can somehow be quiet then we should consider my earlier plan to have fun here. Do you think you can be quiet?" Veronica kissed Liam’s neck.

Liam thought it was a question Veronica should ask herself. He wasn’t the one who would need to bite their lip to stay quiet. "We’ll only find out if we test it."
