Chapter 134: Chapter 134

"This is far enough. Stop the boat."

Dean looked around at the place which would become Vance’s resting place. There wasn’t a boat around or any light in the open sea for anyone to see Vance and save him. Vance wouldn’t get the luck Veronica managed to receive.

Dean didn’t hear Vance groaning anymore which meant he was completely out of it and wouldn’t have long left to live unless he was taken to a hospital.

"Don’t lose consciousness yet, Vance. You’re supposed to be able to pull through this. Aren’t you one of the most untouchable men in the city? I find how easy it was to get you so disappointing," said Dean.

Vance was slouched over where he had been placed when they got on the boat. Since Dean didn’t receive a response he figured that Vance might have passed away due to the wounds.

"I should have gone easy on my elder," Dean muttered. He could admit that the shot to Vance’s back might have been too much but it was always Vance’s fault for trying to run away. "Wake up. You’ll get to be out of your misery soon. Tie him up."

"Don’t touch me," Vance’s voice was heard but too soft for anyone to make out what was said. His body was cold either from the chilly breeze or it was just the shock that came after being shot in his back.

Vance still had some strength to put up a fight against the men who grabbed him and tried to tie a rope around his body so he wouldn’t be able to swim. "She’s alive and well now. If you let me go, I will give you anything you want. I have a lot of money and I have friends who can get you out of all kinds of trouble."

All Vance had to use now was to offer his influence in the city.

Dean stooped down so he would be more at Vance’s level. "I’ve been doing this kind of work since I was a teen. I’ve been sent to collect money, collect people, and dispose of them. Do you know what comes with all of them? People like you are trying to bribe me. It might have worked for you when I was younger but I have everything I need now."

Vance was also skipping over the fact that Dean loved his daughter.

"Had you tried to kill my ex-wife then we probably wouldn’t be here. I would have just shot you in the leg and let you go. You would have been doing me a favour had you killed her but now, I have to admit that I am enjoying myself seeing her stress out," said Dean.

Vance didn’t care to hear about Evelyn. He was trying to save himself. The rope was tight around his arms and legs so he didn’t have much longer. "Everyone needs someone. With a friend like me running this city, you could do anything."

Dean hit Vance’s leg where he had been shot so he could hear him cry out. "I’m a terrible person. I get involved in a lot of crimes. No one expects any good out of a criminal like me but they expect it from someone who goes up on stage and talks about running this city well. Someone who goes around saying his son is a good choice."

"A friend like you would be good to help me out of the charges piling up on me but I hate seeing men like you say one thing to the public and then be like this in private. I don’t need another friend at the moment. It takes me a while to get close to newcomers. You understand, don’t you?" Dean asked.

Vance didn’t comment. He knew what Dean was doing to him by throwing back how he acted to his face.

"You should have loved your children. I can tell you didn’t from how your son is. If that gun had any bullets you would have killed him after me and rightfully so since he stabbed you in the back-"

"I don’t need advice from a man who never spent a day with his daughter," Vance interjected.

"Here I was trying to be nice and you interrupted me. You should have listened to my advice so you could be alive a little longer but let’s get this over with," Dean said as he stood up.

Vance was lifted by the same men who tied him up and held him over the side of the boat. The men still holding him were all that stopped him from falling over since he was leaning so far back that his head was close to touching the water.

Knowing this final and there wasn’t any way out of this, Vance refused to beg again. It already felt like an insult to have to beg this lowlife to spare him.

"I wonder if this was how she was. How afraid she was when they held her over and dropped her,’ Vance said, using his last moments to put the haunting thought of Veronica’s incident in Dean’s head. "I was close to sending someone to the hospital with the suicide mission to shoot her before she woke up."

"I should have had someone grab her neck and hold her head-"

Dean pushed Vance into the water so he didn’t have to hear any more about how Veronica could have died.

As Vance fell the rest of the rope was pulled off the side with him until it tightened, needing the block it was tied to thrown over the side of the boat.

For now, Vance managed to float and keep his head above the water but he knew he wasn’t safe. The block lifted by Dean and another man filled him with panic. With how hard it was for two men to lift it, that block was going to be like an anchor for him and sink him right down to the bottom.

When the block hit the water, Vance’s guess was right as it pulled on the rope wrapped around him and dragged him down.

"Wait-"

Dean didn’t hear much of what Vance yelled before he went under. Vance’s fresh wounds should attract predators to help get rid of pieces of him or so Dean hoped.

Dean stood still until the water calmed where Vance had struggled to fight against the weight on him.

"Start the boat. When we reach home, release all the articles I paid for about Benjamin then get ready to leave the city. I don’t see the appeal of being here," Dean said, looking straight ahead at the lights of the city in the far distance. "I need to get home."

But before then, Dean needed to get the last of Evelyn’s things and inform Liam that there were now two fewer people to worry about.

Dean considered speaking to Veronica over the phone. If he heard her voice then he would want something more though he knew he could not be a father to her.
