Chapter 114: Chapter 114

"You’ll be staying here for now. You’re allowed to walk around the home but you’re not allowed to go outside. If we find another cell phone other than the one you gave us, you won’t be allowed to leave your room. Should I have you strip to see what else you have on you?" Dean asked, gaze going from her face down to her legs.

"Over my dead body," Evelyn replied, refusing to let him see her let that again. "We are not married."

"I have not forgotten. I am a dirty messenger boy, remember? This is how we do things but I am being kind to you since we were married at one point but that doesn’t mean you should test the limit. I hope I do not need to hurt you," said Dean.

Evelyn didn’t believe him. "I’m sure you would like to kill me. If this is you being kind then I would hate to see you angry."

"You don’t want to see me angry especially when you’ve made me already angry," Dean replied as he walked to a window. He tried to open it to show Evelyn that it wouldn’t budge so she couldn’t escape there. "I might bring your husband here soon-"

"Henry didn’t have anything to do with what happened to Veronica," Evelyn said, frustrated that Dean was taking people who weren’t involved.

"Oh," Dean turned around to face Evelyn. "You talk like you know who is involved."

"I don’t know anything," Evelyn responded.

Dean smiled. She wasn’t very good at lying still.

Deal folded up the sleeves of his shirt and approached Evelyn again.

Evelyn kept taking steps back to put some distance between them. She didn’t put it past him to hit her.

"Evelyn," Dean said in a sweet tone that didn’t match how he felt inside. "If you know something then you should tell me now. If I have to hear from someone else that you or anyone you are close to were involved, I will drag you if I need to, tie you up and throw you over the side of a boat while you’re still alive. Don’t test what I already know."

Evelyn truly didn’t have much to share. Beth having Veronica’s phone didn’t mean that she tried to kill Veronica and she was already dealing with the consequences of her drunk driving. "I don’t know anything."

’The more you say that the more it sounds like you are trying to protect someone. Is it that husband of yours or that woman you mistake for your daughter? If they knew you were here, how hard do you think they would try to get you out of here? Look at me," Dean roughly grabbed Evelyn’s cheek to force her to look at him. "Answer me when I speak to you. Did you abandon our daughter for people who won’t give a damn about you?"

"My husband loves me and Beth won’t like that I’m missing,’ Evelyn replied, confident in this.

"Really?" Dean laughed, not believing her. "You sounded shaky like you didn’t believe in yourself. Wouldn’t he think you ran off after seeing what was happening with your little family? That was exactly what you were doing when I found you. No one is going to look for you because they want you home. They’re going to look to see what you ran off with."

Dean let go of Evelyn. "You were better off taking that money I sent you to find yourself a home and a nanny to take care of Veronica since you found it hard to be a mother. Don’t put not wanting to see me in Veronica as the only reason you didn’t want to see her. You just didn’t know how to be a mother."

"Stop trying to make it seem like I am the only bad parent here. When was the last time you saw your daughter? You couldn’t stop doing whatever it is you’re doing now to be with her," said Evelyn.

Dean didn’t need to explain his actions since Evelyn knew why he didn’t give up. He started doing this work young and it was hard to get out. It was either stabbing someone in the back and getting out only to be chased until he died or to keep working and make his way up.

The latter was the best choice for Dean to have the power he needed to watch over Veronica and protect her from the sidelines. What good would he be to her if he was on the run?

"I’m not a good father. I never claimed to be a good father," Dean replied, able to speak his truth. "My world is dangerous and I wouldn’t be able to offer her a good life with me in it. Still, no matter how many evil things I did, I knew that protecting my daughter came first. As much as I wanted to see her, I had to stay away."

Dean had to watch Veronica slowly grow from a little girl to a woman through photos. It was only recently that he got close to her. He made bad choices which greatly affected him but there wasn’t a way to change that now. There was always going to be someone gunning for him because of the choices he made in the past.

"To think you had that spot I wanted. To be able to be right next to her and have a normal life but you decided to put someone who won’t give a damn about you over your daughter. Were you trying to be more like your mother?" Dean asked.

Evelyn had an urge to slap him. He was bringing up things that didn’t matter now. "Enough. I want to be alone. I already told you that I don’t know anything. Why don’t you go and look into the family she married into? She never belonged with Liam."

"And why is that? Is it because you were trying to set up that woman with him? You’re a shame of a mother, Evelyn. You couldn’t raise her properly but you couldn’t let her have the family she found. It’s like you don’t want to see her happy for some reason. I’m going to enjoy having you here," Dean said as he walked toward the door.

He had other business to take care of with someone tailing his car. His suspicion led him to Veronica’s husband who might be worth having a conversation with to get to the bottom of what happened to his daughter.

Evelyn felt like a prisoner the moment the door closed. The windows couldn’t open, there wasn’t a phone or any books in the room. Just a television to know what was happening in the city.
