Chapter 113: Chapter 113

Evelyn laughed instead of being afraid of what he might do to her. She believed him when he said he would kill her. "Now you want to kill me? What happened to protecting me?"

"That was when you were my wife. After you mistreated our daughter, you couldn’t possibly think I would keep you safe. You had one job and you couldn’t do that right. Why shouldn’t I kill you?" Dean asked.

Dean didn’t have any use for Evelyn.

"After all these years, you’re still going around being like this. You would have had me and Veronica-"

"Don’t try to sell me any crap. We fell out of love with each other but we had a daughter to raise. Your protection from me came with you taking care of her. She’s grown now so I don’t need to concern myself with you," said Dean.

Dean didn’t have any love for Evelyn left to care about whether she lived or not. He knew Evelyn must have lived well on the money he sent.

"I can’t believe I got so caught up with you. I was warned that I was going to end up dead if I got with you. I was young and dumb, only seeing the flashy things you could get me. I shouldn’t have gotten married so young. You can judge me all you want but at least I was around to raise her," Evelyn said, refusing to let Dean make her out as the only bad guy.

"Yes, I did treat someone better than our daughter to make my husband happy. If I could have dropped Veronica off somewhere, I would have. Why should I have to keep looking at what reminded me of my past with you? I consider that money payment for what I had to put up with. If you wanted her taken care of you should have kept her," said Evelyn.

Evelyn looked out the car window to view the city. She didn’t know what would happen to her now. "You should be angry with yourself that you couldn’t even take care of your daughter. Is this kind of work worth it? Getting sent around to get rid of people for your bosses? Do you like it?"

Dean smiled since he was humoured by Evelyn thinking he was in the same position she left him in. After some years, he wanted to climb the ladder and he did. The bad side was that he had to stay away from the people he loved even more.

"I didn’t have anything to do with what happened to Veronica. I am not going to sit here and try to act like I was the best mother in the world but I didn’t try to kill her. She got herself caught up in the Sterlings and Smiths. Anyone could have tried to kill her,’ Evelyn said, leaving out Beth’s role so he wouldn’t doubt her.

"And after that, you attended their parties and pretended to act like none of them might be involved. I hear the hospital visit to see her was eventful."

Evelyn couldn’t believe how much he knew. How was he able to find out what happened? ’Who was in the room?’ She wondered, trying to think back to that time.

Evelyn made more than one visit so it could have been the one visit where Liam’s people wouldn’t allow her inside.

"If you’re going to kill me, just do it. As much as Veronica hates me, I bet it would be sad to hear that her father killed her mother. She’s been looking for you, which you must already know. It’s been a long time since she saw you. Veronica doesn’t have her memories. She lost them after what happened," Evelyn revealed.

Dean put away his gun. "You’re digging yourself a deeper hole by telling me all of us. Why? Because your husband is too busy with his niece to help you?’

"No," Evelyn shook her head. "You went through the trouble of showing your face to me so that means you already have something planned for me. I feel too drained to put up a fight or try to lie to you so just do whatever you want. I doubt Henry will notice that I am missing."

Evelyn made herself comfortable. Part of her always knew that Dean was going to come back at some point. "How long have you been watching us?"

"Since you left. She’s my daughter," Dean reminded Evelyn. "Don’t mention stopping what I do. I’m already too far into it to leave. Once I deal with who tried to kill her then I will leave and be out of your hair."

Evelyn sneaked a glance at Dean. "Are you going to show your face to her? I would like you to so she can stop coming to me. Well, I don’t know if I need to worry about that now since you might kill me."

Dean didn’t respond. He didn’t have to let Evelyn in on his plans.

Veronica should continue not to know anything about her father. He had to scare her off from trying to reach out to him. She had a good life now that could be ruined by her having any involvement with him.

Evelyn rolled her eyes. Why did she try to have a conversation with him? It was always pointless to ask him anything since he liked to be secretive and claimed it was to keep them protected. "Just kill me now and get it over with. I don’t want to go in circles with you."

"I’m not going to kill you but I am not letting you go home yet. Just stay quiet and don’t do anything stupid. You might be able to go home soon," Dean said and then took out his phone to check a location.

"Are you going after the Smiths or Sterlings? They are not easy people. Don’t you see what the Smiths are up to these days? If you fail and they find out who you are to me, my life here is done either way so be careful," Evelyn advised Dean. She didn’t need him to mess up her life again.
