Chapter 94: 2.26.3 Hiding under the city.
As the negotiation talks between the Military and Mages carried on above the surface. The Knights clad in heavy armor made their way to the muted sewers, breaking the barricades the military had left in their wake while looking around for any traps.
Each step they took, the ground shook. Like heavy machines, they moved in uniform pace while the energy of their body started to rise bit by bit under the group amplification effect the Radiant Knights had due to carrying the same blood.
"We are here." Haseem announced, while looking at the map, then pointing toward the sewer exit. "The rest of 200 meters, we have to walk on the surface."
The warehouses were built after the core city, hence they fell outside of the old city influence. But it didn’t mean they were too far off the core city due to them being railway adjacent.
So, with the path clear in their heads, they walked, climbed out of the sewers and witnessed an almost muted road in front of them.
There were few windows and people that looked toward them, but the Knights completely ignored them. The current public held no strength and the Military was too weakened to keep watch over the whole city anyways. Not to mention, in such far off zones with less public.
The Knights could even see some stragglers walking along the empty street while playing around. As if the fight that happened a day ago was just an illusion to them. No, the correct term is freedom.
These men can finally walk out free with less military presence to hold them back.
Some of them even seem to be going around and looking for places to rob. Of course, when the eyes of these men fell onto the knights, they ran away from the scene as fast as they can, fearing repercussions or considering the Knights, part of the military.
Which made their journey a bit calmer than expected. Not like they cared for it much, the knights had only one thing on their mind, to destroy whatever conspiracy the Blue Lotus Cult was planning.
White for Vance Clifford, the captain of the Knights, his heart held poison for me. For a reason I didn’t even know or remember.
I was not even aware of his master that he mentioned. Which made me interested in what he was going to do.
But, enough about me.
The Knights soon reached the chained gate to the warehouses that were built adjacent to railway tracks. Some of which were already occupied by trains that carried transport with them.
Though, it was due to the Military that still stood tall here, that no one tried to steal these resources.
Of course, these military men can only handle civilians or common mercenaries. When faced with the Knights, their bodies were broken and their bullets were twisted in a single fight. Making them useless and unable to even warn others of what happened to them, while the Knights took care of them in a single attack.
"We don’t wish to kill you. There is something sinister going on in one of the warehouses inside and we are here to deal with that." Leaving such words to the soldiers, the Knights moved on. Whether the soldiers call for help or not, it doesn’t matter. The Knights have shown enough courtesy by not killing them and which would have made their following work easier without any unexpected parties from messing up their pace.
But they were not evil, they understood the value of life more than anyone else. They might be zealots, but this anger was birthed from theri powerlessness as they were victims once in their life as well.
So they understood the plight of the weak better than anyone else.
"She didn’t get fooled, I can feel it, the air here feels the same as Gregory street."
The curse of Gregory street is famous and the city had feared the birth of similar zones in the city before. A fear turned into reality in the warehouse. Making the Knights activate their burning blood, causing a white flame to slowly cover their body, barring any mental influences from entering their mind.
"Haseem, stay here and prevent anyone from coming any further. But in case they are stronger, just back off." With those words, Vance led his men forward toward the warehouse that seemed to be the very center of this cursed zone.
And as the sun started to drop down and the two moons appeared in the sky, the concentration of the curse energy increased bit by bit.
So the group knew they had to hurry and stop whatever was going on here.
*Streo Bang
With a heavy punch, the metal chains of the warehouse were broken and what appeared inside it was nothing more than a grain bag filling the whole place.
With multiple rats scuttering about.
"All of it is rotten." The group didn’t know whether it was a trap or not. But what they knew for sure was that their target was below the grains.
"Remove the bags." It might have been hard work for common people, but for the knights two among them jumped onto the grains and started to remove them at a fast pace one by one, throwing the grains to the side whose bag broke from time to time. But this was not to worry about any of it.
It’s better than burning it up.
And if Remira had reached this point, she might have wondered how there was so much food but the refugees still went hungry from time to time.
But this was to be expected in a city.
"Captain, there is nothing here." One of the Knights said, are clearing the area. Appearing a bit surprised.
Though Vance didn’t budge or showed any disappointment. He just arrived at the scene and sheathed his sword.
"Move" He ordered, as his fist turned into lit up with white fire, illuminating the whole warehouse, before falling onto the cemented floor. And with a bang, the ground cracked and it collapsed into a hole just a meter deep.
"??"
Then before they could speak a word, rats started to crawl out of the broken floor. Many of then crying in pain and bleeding. Some even died before running away due to the injury sustained by Vance’s punch.
With many more corpses hidden below ground.
"What is going on?" Vance wondered, before using his sheathed sword to strike away the rocks before his men could come to help him.
Exposing a scene of carnage his punch caused.
Blood and guts of rats were everywhere. But more than that, below these blood and guts remained a giant magic circle that the group was very much familiar with.
"A rat nest... they hid it in the rat nest." Carrion was the one to notice it at first. Though some were wondering why the rats didn’t make a sound till now, because due to their supernatural senses, they would have easily detected it.
But when Lance looked a bit deeper, he found few of the rats that survived his attack still remained sleeping.
And this sleeping was natural as the rats were completely under the effect of the curse of sleep.
"How many places like this could the city have?" Vance wondered, but Carrion didn’t had a single answer for it.
Though there was one thing the group was sure about.
’Its a trap to waste our time once again.’
They thought, before something lit up in Vance’s head.
"The curse in this land started to appear as the moon came to rise, we have checked before. There were no zones like this in the city before, beside Gregory."
"That seems likely. But where do we go now?... this might just be one of the many curse zones that are currently forming all over the city?"
"I have some ideas in my mind."
*****
While the Knights played detective, failing to even utilize the information I gave them on time. Remira on the other hand had long strayed from the path that Number two asked her to talk.
That nose of her, it would seem that it picked up some scent that even I was unaware of. Something that only she knew, which forced her to enter a sewer and slowly go to the same place as me.
Which was wonderful.
Just totally different from what I expected from her, which made it even more wonderful.
Though, our meeting might take some time, as Remira came across the person she seemed to be following before she came across us.
"This smell?" Remira wondered, seeing the wall of the sewers that seemed to have just been chiseled by someone very unprofessional. Leaving structural damages to the wall. Though, this is what you get when you use refugees without sill for masonry to chisel away at the sewer walls at night.
Though, it was these damages that caused Remira to pick up on the scent and with a punch from her only remaining working hand. She found herself next to what seemed like a lab with various bodies strewn about.
And in the middle stood a woman with her associates, ready to leave this place.
A woman, on whose waist remained a gun that Remira was very familiar with.
A gun that she had played with as a child.
"It was you!!"
There was no dialog, there was no need to curse or ask why this woman did it.
There was only anger and rage as the short sword on Remira’s back flew straight at the throat of the woman who had already casted her spells after the entrance of an intruder.
