Chapter 92: 2.26.1 Dyadic Moon
In front of the academies, there was nothing beside destruction left.
This was the fight of mages against the machines. Knowledge of arcana against the knowledge of science.
And the one that won at the end was science.
"Stop it, we give up!!" Holfaraz, the tower master of Arcana, was the first one to accept his defeat. Although he remained unscathed, the same can’t be said about other mages that were below him as well as the countless buildings that were shelled to oblivion.
The losses broke his heart and caused immense anger to bubble up in his heart. But being a mage was being a creature of reason and pragmatism. One should know when to accept defeat.
Not to mention, their enemy brought too much firepower with them and their attack range was far higher than mages as well. So the moment the shield that protected the campus was brought down. So were the mages that were ready to fight, who were suddenly pelted with a nonstop shower of bullets.
Of course, there was a limit to how much their shield spells can suffer and the range of attack most mages can use.
Which gave the army an absolute advantage over them on early levels. That was until the master level mages took part in the battle themselves, rushing toward the army in high fervor before coming to a stop by the Knights that were employed by army.
Led by Commander Graham, equipped with the latest defensive gear built by the army to kill the mage corps of enemies on the battlefield. Now this very same platoon aimed their sword at the mages.
Of course, none of them went for the kill here. If possible, all they did was cut a few limbs if possible, while their armor ate away at the spells as much as they could.
Though there were losses on both sides, one can’t always hold back during a war and accidents were prone to happen.
Which had finally forced the hands of the archmages, who intended to annihilate and take out the army by themselves.
But then again, this time, it was Wilhelm’s turn. Armed with a motorized armor, along with some other mages, he took on archmages on his own. Though, there were only two archmages that came to fight him off.
The leader of the Tower of Arcana and his old master from the Tower of Transmutation.
"What kind of armor is that?" This was the end of the battle and the mages accepted their loss. Pushing any further would cause the death toll to rise. As currently, the things can still be said to be manageable.
As for the reason for their defeat?
Of course, it was as the military had thought. The mages living in the safety of their campus have forgotten what it was like to fight in a war. Most of them were greenhorns for carnage. The moment their life was at stake, their legs gave in and their spells failed multiple times. Which caused the current situation.
One can even say, it was a one sided war, beside fear master mages and the archmages that took part in the war. Most were amateurs and closer to civilians than mages.
Of course, these civilians were walking talking war weapons, but due to their inexperience, they could never utilize their own potential to the fullest.
"This?..." Wilhelm Faust, the leader of this armored troop of mages remained mute in emotion, as he explained to his teacher. "A personal creation of ours, Hydraulics with magic, using transmutation, we can increase the durability of the materials while maintaining the lightness. This was the first time we used it in the field, it seems it worked as intended."
Looking at his student who spoke so clearly about it, the old tower master Venglebod understood one thing.
This was just a mere test for his student. He was treated as a test subject for his armor that might change the future of the battlefield. "Without that armor, you would have lost." Venglebod spoke, looking at the destruction his spells have caused in the surrounding area. Overturning the lands and even destroying multiple trucks in the process.
But even with that much strength, he still can’t match up with the agility and strength the armor provided his student, which was unlike that of a mage.
Making a feeble body spellcaster into a tank.
"I am to assume, your question means you have accepted your loss as well Tower Master Venglebod?" Wilhelm Faust asked, his eyes looking around the destruction and the tired expression of his soldiers as well as the mages, most of whom were in shock with some even crying. ’Weak.’ He thought, before turning his eyes toward his master as well as Holfaraz who floated right next to Venglebod.
"Fighting any further would be foolish. The losses are not worth it." Holfaraz was the first to speak, appearing tired and defeated by the fight. All their arrogance came right back at them, their defeat entailed a lot more worse things if they had just given up on the few mages that Maisel had originally requested.
As of now, they can be deemed as traitors. Which would entail death for most people, but here as mages, they would be forcefully managed by the army, until they have served their time. As for what happens during their time in the army, all of it depends on the global state of affairs or whether a war will break out.
But those in the know can already assume from this small action of the army that they were readying themselves for a bigger war. Hence the need for them to conquer the mages that have turned lazy with time, leeching on government grants to conduct research that never helps the country. While wallowing in their superiority.
All of that led to their defeat now.
"We accept our loss, stop for now, and bring in medics." Venglebod spoke, before giving a deep look at the armor.
It was the armor that confounded him and also explained to him why this scuffle happened to begin with.
He was a transmutation mage of tool branch as well, but most of his creations were formations or magic items. Nothing close to the armor that he saw in front of him. An armor that seemed to be using a mage’s magic to run.
And if an army of mages wearing that armor were to appear in a battlefield, he can already imagine how one sided the fight could be.
’It’s why the army eyed us.’
The mage was dealt with easily by the army. Even with a smaller force, their experience and the elite platoons were able to overpower the mages and force them down to accept defeat.
Of course it took a whole day for things to calm down and the city to reel in from the shock of the mages defeat, something that no one ever expected
After which, it was time for the reparations and the meeting between the mages and the military where the rest of the archmages that didn’t partake in the fight also appeared.
Of course, if these archmage had taken part in the fight, the results might have been a lot different than one might think, as they were one of the strangest mages in existence.
The Tower of Illusion and Phantasm, as well as the Tower of Conjuration and Contracts.
Both of them being women who were never interested in this war to begin with.
As for their reason.
"As the ones that didn’t participate in this war, I assume we can earn some leeway on your end?" Annaturam, the mistress of Contracts asked in a kind voice. Even after the loss of mage union of Durum, she was not the least bit worried.
And why would she?
When she had come here, she already bought the single mage that was named in the list of her tower.
And yes, this was her reason. Unlike the other towers, she kept a tight leash on her mages, even though her tower delved into sacrifices to form contracts.
No, one should say,due to knowing the nature of her own magic, she understood that those younger than her might try to go down the wrong path to obtain greater power, hence the reason she had maintained a tight leash on her students.
While for Kassandra, who was silently sipping the tea on the side, her’s was an illusion and phantasm, she didn’t even need human subjects to experiment on. Instead, Illusion and phantasm can only be learned properly if one experiences it themselves. Making many Illusion mages to keep using their spells on themselves. Which has caused them to appear foolish and crazy from time to time.
"Of course Archmage Anna. We have already received your as well as Archamge Kassandra’s surrender beforehand. We won’t be pursuing your case any further. And I would also like to thank you for your choice, otherwise, we can’t be sure we would have won this fight." And the military officer that came for the negotiation here gladly stood by his words. There was no need to antagonize a woman that can summon an entire platoon of supernatural monsters on her own. And the same was true for Kassandra that can push every soldier into an illusion, turning them vegetables.
Though the two on the other side were not too happy with this. Of course they had fought before over the two Tower Master’s refusal to fight in this war. But only now they know why.
But it was not time to fight, they had to reduce their losses as much as they could. It was why they were here.
Though, before the negotiation could continue any further, all the mages suddenly stopped what they were doing and then turned to look at the window.
It was the Dyadic Full Moon that day.
