Chapter 65: 2.17.3 Joining up.
Moving from one place to another, this had become of Maisel and Remira at this point.
Sending Thalia’s body to Lecarth library, while leaving Adam there for protection as well. The team of two was not as big as before and Marshal Maisel was not in his right mind when he learned the news of what happened.
"Someone dared to desecrate my son’s remains?" He asked the police chief, who started to sweat under the heat exuded by Maisel’s body.
As Maisel was never in one spot nor did anyone know of his proper location, it became harder for the military to inform him of anything, as Maisel had gone underground during his little outing.
Though when he learned that Maisel was sure to appear in the recent bout of supernaturals in the streets of Durum.
And as he was going to reprimand the dogs of Radiance anyways, he considered coming here himself. Because he was the only one who could have done so.
But who would have considered the reaction Maisel would have to such a news would be so strong.
He had just come here to deal with the Radiance society, who had made some higher ups angry over their efficacy and lack of any progress.
"For the details, we know none of it. This is a Military matter and they only informed us of this, as they couldn’t reach you." The police chief answered, while using a handkerchief to soak up his sweat.
While his assistant on the other hand couldn’t maintain the spell of silence any longer and it came off. Causing the noises in the area to resume, but there was no change in Maisel’s face. Instead, he turned to look at Remira.
"You stay here, find the culprit and who they were after. I will be going to see what is going on in the barracks." Maisel calmed down, the heat around him died down with his mood. But his eyes remained blazing as his eyes turned to the police chief. "As for you, don’t stop her. She is working for me now, meaning any attempt to stop her from doing her job is a direct intervention in the work of my men. And if I wish for you, you might face trials for disrupting a Marshall during his operation, Ramroa."
"And I don’t wish for someone of your age to go through something annoying as a military trial."
Hearing those words, the eyes of the Police chief opened apart. He cursed at the men that had requested him to suppress the activity of Radiance society, as well as his own stupidity.
He never knew how close the Marshall had gotten with the Radiance hall these coming days. From what he understood, the relationship between the two parties was never good. So seeing such a strong opposition from Marshall against his little slight was surprising. "Don’t get angry Marshall, I was just doing my job. But if you wish for it, I would choose to ignore their inaction, for now."
But the Police chief was not someone who would back out due to fear so easily. Marshall might be a great position in the army, but in public security, they didn’t have much reach. Not to mention, he still had strong people backing him up.
Not to mention, there is no way he can act like a coward in front of so many people, he had his pride as a Police chief and a name to uphold. Backing off easily would be too damaging to his authority in front of so many people.
So he stood his ground somewhat, speaking ill of Remira, while also showing a way out for the Marshall. Looking to uphold his wishes, while also deriding Remira.
But Remira didn’t say much to these allegations. She just maintained her silence, knowing full well that speaking here would only bring trouble.
And Maisel was also not pushy. So with a few more words to Remira, he saw to it that the Police chief left. Before leaving the premises with only one of his men.
While Remira stayed with the other four that came here.
"Two of you stay here, keep watch over the Police. The others, come with me."
With those words, she left for the house where she judged the two parties had either come out of , or gone to before.
And though mixed with other smells, Remira was sure of one thing. ’It might have an entrance to the sewer.’
Due to her innate blood mixing with the blood of Radiance, her original tracking abilities had become much stronger.
Not just tracking one through their aura and detecting curses, Remira also retained her original dog-like nose. And it was why she was able to ascertain the hidden entrance from the particular house, just from a distance.
Though, it could only be confirmed through eyes. Because to Remira, this whole city smelled of sewer as well as rats.
Ignoring the gazes of onlookers, Remira broke open the door directly and entered the abandoned home.
Though unlike before, she can say for sure where the people that came to this house went.
"Keep your guard up, we can be considered in enemy territory now."
With those words, Remira led the other two operatives behind her deeper into the house and reaching the basement, she soon found the gate which led directly to the sewer.
A gate that was kept open.
’If it were the Blue Lotus, they should have closed it in an attempt to hide it. Which means, the last one to enter or exit were my seniors.’
With those thoughts in her mind, Remira directly jumped into the hole and smelled the strong breath of sewer in her nose, which caused her to snicker in pain.
But she held it in, before getting used to such a smell.
"Its clear." She informed the operatives that followed Remira down below, surprised to notice that it was truly just the sewers.
"I have picked up on their trail, their smell is clearer than the sewer." With how strong Remira ’s nose was, she was able to pick the oddest smell out in the sewer, unlike above where there was a mixture of smells, which made it harder to pinpoint the individuals.
Though, while moving forward, a thought did appear in her head.
’Were they operating from the sewer all this time?’
It was also at this point, Remira remembered the time when Kairut approached Adam with a disguise and how badly he smelled as well.
The odor of sewer, it was the reason why she got fooled by him in the first place.
Just like her seniors first did, Remira also found the hidden chamber and the dead corpses of the rat in it.
Which surprised her.
Its been an hour since her seniors left. And in that hour, the small radiation of magic elements in the air had disappeared as well. So with a lack of context, she was confused of what had transpired in this room.
She just followed her instinct and hence was led here.
"This place, why are there so many dead rats?"
It was only then the group recalled that there were no living rats in the area before.
"This place needs to be cordoned off. There is something wrong here." The two stopped here, thinking this was the end point and tried to send a message to the two standing above.
Though to their surprise. None of their communicators worked.
Which caused their suspicions to strengthen.
"Sir Remira, I would be leaving this place to inform others about this. My associate will stay with you till then." One of the operatives spoke, knowing that delaying any matter would only be detrimental to them.
"You can go, but I don’t think I will be staying here for long."
Remira spoke, turning to the gate. "Other’s probably left here, they didn’t find anything and moved forward." There was no reason to stay here if her seniors abandoned this place as well. No, it might be a place that was only used for one instance and then abandoned.
And besides, Remira was currently alone, Pierta was dead and Maxim was kidnapped. As for Maisel, she and him were in a co-operative relationship.
Which was why she desired to find these seniors of hers and join them in their pursuit, instead of acting like the dummy to take over all the attention, while they fought from the dark, just like they did before.
"I will follow you Sir Remira." The other operative spoke, but Remira shook her head and informed him. "Just tell the Marshall, I will be sending him updates on Kairut’s situation. And for me to properly integrate with them, I have to follow them all on my own."
The hidden knights would not wish to come out on the surface, for they were not allowed on this land where the Wizards reigned freely and if the word of it was known to the outside world, the mages might come together and oppose them openly.
"As you say, Sir." And the operative was also understanding of the situation. Even though he didn’t know much, his keen eyes and ears understood who Remira was going to join with. But there is no need to mention such details out in the open.
If others beside Maisel asked, he will just claim that Remira abandoned her job and left the city.
So she left from the same front she entered before.
Walking the path her seniors walked and slowly came closer to the place where her seniors once stood.
Though before she could reach that place, a different smell entered her nose, a smell different from the rats and ammonia that was ever present in the sewers.
He smells of blood.
"?"
Rushing ahead, the smell got stronger, while the sounds of fighting entered her ears. Which surprised her for a bit.
So, before even looking at the fight, she pulled out her sword, while lit up with white fire.
It was time for Remira to vent.
