Chapter 63: 2.17.1 Death and defeat.
It took a while for Marshall Maisel to reach the scene and all he witnessed at that point was police messing up the scene.
So he shouted, ordering them to stay away from the area, before entering it with Remira who was disappointed with last night’s useless foray.
"No reaction, just like before. I can’t say what they used to be." Around the scene were burnt corpses of insects that smelled somewhat sweet and delectable. Reminding them of seafood, which caused Remira to frown for a while.
On the other hand, looking at all the devastation, and pieces of insectoid flesh strewn about. "Its Kairut, and he suffered massive injuries from someone very familiar." Maxim said, turning to look at Remira, who matched Maxim’s gaze, before dropping her head and sighing.
"Yes, they are here." The burn marks on the body might be a common occurrence, but the remnant aura that was left in this place was harder to go unnoticed by Remira’s nose.
As for Maisel, his history with the Radiance society had been deep. He knew many things about them, not to mention, his flame itself was once part of Radiance society.
On the other hand, Remira continued. "But I would prefer it if you don’t speak of it to others in the city." Her voice was deep and filled with intimidation. Because, even if the Marshall was working with her, it didn’t deny the fact that they were two different parties carrying different goals, which just happened to intersect with each other.
Which was why Maisel was not so offended by that tone, he just spoke. "The more the merrier." Last night’s outing was not very fruitful, they kept searching for Kairut and only ended up finding pieces of his flesh in the morning the next day.
Hence the reason he didn’t dislike any added help. Insead, he felt a bit relieved that there were men out there who were as driven as he was. And they seem to have taken out Kairut.
Making him ask. "Is there a way to contact them?"
Kairut, the man who killed his son had now been apprehended by a co-operative force, which were the Radiance society. Making him look forward to exciting the same pain his son would have suffered before his death.
Though Remira could only shake her head in denial. "I don’t, the Magiaster might have known, but he is not here anymore." She answered, causing Marshall Maisel to lower down his expectations a bit.
"Did you find something else?" Maisel asked and Remira turned to look toward a house, where she had detected a disgusting smell which the body pieces of Kairut seemed to be carrying.
But before she could say anything the Police chief entered the scene fuming with anger.
"What have you turned our city into?" He asked, pointing at Remira."We brought you here to deal with the case of sleep sickness, but what about the bombs? Assassination on the street? And then this?"
"Even our minister was attacked last night and I bet it’s one of your people." The police chief had no intention of giving Remira any chance to speak or put forward her case. No, from his mood, he came here with the intention of accusing Remira.
"Ramroa, aren’t you going too far to ignore me?" Maisel stepped between the police chief and Remira who was confused and feeling guilty over what just happened.
"Marshall, it’s not like I forgot about you. I was going to talk to you in just a moment after I was done with these bastards." There was no hint of respect for Remira in Ramroa’s voice.
But considering there was a war hero in front of him, he calmed down and spoke in a low tone. "I will deal with you later." He said to Remira before turning to the Marshall, showing a cordial expression while also appearing a bit apologetic.
Which surprised Marshall a bit. Earlier on, this same man had appeared antagonistic to Remira, who was with him, while completely ignoring him. But now, has his face changed this much?
"Ramroa, I understand the difficulties you might be experiencing these days, but your conduct is still unbecoming of a police chief." Marshall reprimanded, while turning to look at Remira, explaining. "I am working side by side with the Radiance knights, and hence am in the know of what they have suffered and are going through currently."
"And I can say for certain that they are doing their best to stop the enemy that is causing all these mishaps."
Hearing all those words that sounded like Compliments, Remira calmed down a bit. It was not due to the compliments themselves, but the fact that some evil thought had risen up in her heart when the Police chief came so hard at her. She was going to speak out, if not for Marshall stopping her in his own way.
"Marshall, I understand that I rushed to certain conclusions, but there was a reason for that." He explained himself, before turning mild once again. But then looking around the vicinity and finding that only Remira was close to them.
"As for the real reason why I am here. I speak of it whence this Knight of Radiance leaves the scene. For my following words contain some confidential news."
At those words, Marshall thought for a while before asking. "Does it have anything to do with this case?"
He questioned, and out of helplessness, the Police Chief Ramroa nodded with the words. "Might be." Escaping from his lips.
"Then she is involved. Say your words and don’t delay it any further." It was not a request, but an order from Maisel, which Ramroa had to follow up on. So he requested his assistant to cast a Voice damper spell over the area. Which surprised Remira as well as Marshall.
It would seem, the words that were going to be told were a bit too precious.
And as the two looked forward to the Police’s chief’s narration of what happened in the barracks last night where Farhad’s body was kept.
Far away, in a clock toward, a small word crawled to the highest part of the tower and entered a hidden room inside of it.
A room filled with various canisters containing blood and as well as various alien substances in them.
With a single empty cylinder in the middle. In which the small worm which had no legs, hands or even eyes, slowly crawled into.’
Before its pincer-like mandibles started to spew silk all over its body, while the door of the cylinder closed up, before being filled with the solution present in other canisters.
This was none other than Kairut, who had been turned into a worm after all his limbs were cut off after the last fight.
Any semblance of humanity was absent from his body. But it didn’t mean it was his end.
For someone that has pursued immortality of any kind he could find. This was one of his projects, now turned into a hidden card to be used when he was at its lowest.
A time that came a lot earlier than he had expected.
He didn’t even have the time or opportunity to play his cards right, the Knights of Radiance were hated for a reason. And their direct counter of his ability was one of the reasons.
But no more, there is no need to worry.
It took a total of three days before the liquid in the other canister was emptied out, following which the cylinder opened on its own. Where a giant bulbous cocoon took its breath in a mild manner.
And as time passed, the color of the cocoon turned grayer by the minute, with its silky fibers turning rotten and weak.
Following which a soft supple hand ripped out of it. A hand that seemed to belong to a child. And as the being slowly crawled out of it, it truly was a child.
But hairless and filled with anger.
"Those bastards." Kairut cursed in a childish voice, which didn’t take time to turn into a painful moan, as the bones in Kairut’s started to grow at a rapid pace, while the flesh started to thin out due to lack of nutrition.
"I will kill each and everyone of them." His voice was a lot more mature than before, almost reaching someone of their teenage years. But due to the lack of nutrients, the Kairut that grew this way appeared malnourished.
But well, this is something that can’t be helped.
He had dared to cheat me.
He had dared to take my absence as an excuse to live his life voraciously.
And I won’t deny it, but it hurt me. It was like seeing an old friend that went through thick and thin with me, abandoning me at the last second, out of his own greed, while never considering what I felt.
A feeling that I reviled a lot.
And I believe you would understand it. Because at the end of the day, gods like you are human as well.
As for the insects that crawled below my feet. Cursing at others for his own mistake.
Even then, he had the audacity to claim that he would kill them.
"Oh little Kairut. Look at what has become of you. So weak and pathetic." I put my leg on the growing body of Kairut. Who froze up hearing my words.
Followed by an emotion that I have come to love.
"Haha! I really like that face of yours... I wish for you to make that face for the remainder of your life."
