Chapter 529: 8.10.1 The betrayal.

This was the first time Pea was watching something so devastating, and a tinge of guilt appeared in her heart for a bit before she suppressed her emotions.

There are no wars without sacrifices, nothing has changed since the day she stepped foot into this, nor will it change in the future.

The Knights, priests, and transcendent beings of all kinds of backgrounds watched in horror, with some staying inside the Court, while others moving out to deal with the problem, that were the insects.

Pea didn’t follow those people, she remained inside looking after Heroth who appeared as confused as the rest of the people, but in that confusion was something else hidden which Pea didn’t understand completely. But from the little fluctuations she saw in a world that was only visible to her, she can ascertain one thing.

She might just come to learn who this man was. ’Someone in contact with Malidi, someone who might have known Jester at one point.’ Pea never hid her curiosity over this enigma of a man.

A man who needed the protection of others, but also someone who could take out a Grand Master ranked being in an instant, or so she had heard.

Something was fascinating about such power, such potential, which is harnessed properly. She can achieve what she has been here to do since the start. Of course, personal matters aside, she still needed to leave a giant blow to the Church of Truthful Deceit for reasons only she was privy to.

For the knowledgeable, it won’t be hard to know why if they were to learn of her true identity. "I believe the hearing needs to be ..." Pea played her cards, requesting the pause on this hearing and focusing on the matters more important. But before she could ask for it, there were already certain Knights on the move against Heroth.

Remira reacted appropriately, standing between Heroth and the Church Knights, but with a simple flick of their fingers, she was thrown away.

"Know your place heathen.." One of the Knights spoke, moving in to apprehend Heroth who showed a worried look on his face for Pea before asking. "What is the meaning of this?" His eyes flared with a yellow hue, for a bit, before being suppressed by the blood energy of the Knights surrounding him, causing Heroth to fall to his Knees.

"You..." But before the Knight could say any words further. The domain of Dearma unfurled, covering virtually everyone in the district, including the Court, which suddenly shook, trying to fight off the influence, while breaking the suppression of the Knights of Heroth as well as Pea, who had turned mortal in the Court.

And unlike Pea who was hurt after the initial flick, Heroth came to her rescue, ignoring the suppression that only affected the transcendent beings, he helped her up and said. "Lass, you are to protect the little old me." He spoke with a tinge of worry before asking her to move.

But even if the Knights were affected, the Grand Priestess was not, but most of her attention was initially attracted by the mosquitoes that started to die in batches after the first attack of the hidden Legendary in the district. Somewhat alleviating her worries as she noticed that although some mortals had fallen down, unconscious, the damage was not as severe as she had imagined.

This is where she turned her head toward the escaping mortals, that wished to step outside the court and regain their strength.

But would she allow it?

Lady Lies, belonging to the same generation as Duke Wortham had seen many things that the world of today might consider absurd.

Things that are closer to folklore do exist for real in her eyes. Which is why she knows to never take anything lightly, because who knows what might happen?

Condition yourself for the worst, always believe in intuition., which she did.

For the past week, something had worried her. A tangible threat that had always been at the back of her head, but she could never pinpoint what it was or why was she feeling such things. And although some odd things had happened in the district, she never considered that to be the reason for her worry.

Neither the terrorists capable of spreading disease nor the fear of the cultist that might just be hiding among the many denizens of the south district.

Whatever the threat was, it was more real than one can imagine.

So when the incident with Priest Halbrand happened in a pawn shop, and she noticed some odd things around the shop soon after, she paused and made up her mind.

It’s why she approached Duke Wortham, wondering if he felt something the same or not, but his answer had disappointed her.

Duke Wortham felt nothing, which shows that either his intuition was weak or the fact that he never cared for the mortals or the city of Rudrain at all.

The latter of what seemed to be true.

But there was one thing that the Duke did, he warned the mortal that caused her some worry, and his response? He chose to stay here, causing the worry in her heart to increase with time. ’He needs to be brought into the court.’

You fear what you can’t understand, which when mixed with her intuition tells her that the best course of action is not to let this monster get away, as he can come back for revenge. Instead, to create the whole illusion that this monster has a chance in the city, and let him enter the court that will force him into the state of mortal. Which is where she can capture him after a flimsy hearing, which in her eyes was as good as won on her side.

She will apprehend and seal this weird thing in the dungeons of the church for ages, where the suppression effect is much stronger.

As for the Bartender Guild? Who cares about them, barely active for a decade, and they think they have the same influence as those previously established families that had ruled this very country for a long time.

They had already made an overreach when they exposed the Azure Dragon, even if they were in the wrong. So the church of Truthful Deceit had to force them in line. And this was their choice of how to do it.

A filthy tactic if one were to think about it.

So the moment she saw her little plan came to a ruination due to the action of the Domain, she turned her head toward the two escaping figures, before smiling ruefully before saying. "There is no exit." With those words, the doors that were leading out of the court suddenly melded with the walls.

Her lies turn into truth.

Which startled Heroth. "This..."

"There is no escape, you will remain here." She spoke in a sad tone while the Knights that had recovered from the domain suppression closed in on the two mortals without much emotion on their faces.

"You bunch of snobbish cunts, still focusing on me when there are people still fighting outside?" Heroth spoke in words too vulgar for a church, causing the faces of Knights to turn cruel suddenly.

"What? Now want to beat an old broken drunk? Come, you bastards... you fucking little shits have annoyed me to no end. Fuck you, and fuck that old bitch at the back. I have had enough of your little games." Letting Pea fall to the ground, who was injured. Heroth took on a boxing pose.

Rarely does his rash side surface, and the church being the holy place, he had held his tongue till now. But there is a limit to how much disrespect he can endure. How much distrust he could tolerate.

There is a limit to how much he can control his tongue. And these bastards, they were treating him for a fool. They really did.

"You, you people are after me as well, aren’t you?" He spoke in anger, looking at the Priestess who made an odd face hearing such words but didn’t speak as the Knights crowded the old Heroth, pushing him down with just their fingers and binding him with enchanted chains. "You bastards... This was a shitty choice, this whole city." His eyes showed in yellow light that few could see, but the chains and the church kept suppressing them.

"You tin cans, I am old, show some restraint." His eyes shone with a stronger tinge of Yellow, as the chains that bound him lit up in blue light, before being successful in suppressing Heroth again.

At this current moment, there were few outsiders in the church, mostly those from the weaker families that shut their eyes over what was happening, while the rest were outside fighting some unknown enemy.

An enemy that could appear and disappear whenever it wanted.

An enemy that was virtually immortal and growing in numbers as time went by.

But the church’s attention was on Heroth.

And Pea, well, Sheva’s attention was on the Priestess. ’That tinge of darkness, it’s enough.’
