Chapter 528: 8.09.5 Excuse me, Mister.
The public of the southern district would have never imagined that their life would ever be put in jeopardy. Even when part of the neighborhood got quarantined, most of the public remained in darkness over the incident and were just trying to survive the onslaught of investigations and innocents who were treated as terrorists.
But for peace, most of the common people had endured the torture, they acted ignorant even while knowing certain things. And they understood what to say and not to say in this safe and secure city.
This might explain why most mortals were rendered with horror when tragedy struck. None of them knew what to do when a swarm of mosquitoes rose out of the sewers and flew into the air.
Mosquitoes are simple insects that can be killed with a slap on one’s arm. Or even using some smoke they can be easily get rid of.
They were never more than nuisances for the commoners; even the diseases they spread were easily treated in certain hospitals or churches.
But that is the belief when one faces mosquitoes in small numbers. But what if there are hundreds of mosquitoes? Thousands of them, millions?
Or uncountable numbers that cloud the very sun itself?
Panic will set in even if they still consider the mosquitoes harmless insects. The number and their action itself looked odd to mortals, making them almost recall certain old legends and stories about plagues they had heard before.
The ones with weak minds were the first to panic and run around, trampling over their fellow men as they tried to save their pathetic lives before the swarm of mosquitoes came for them.
But nothing like that happened, well not like the mortals had thought.
After the initial deaths in the sewers that took out a bunch of mortals, certain mosquitoes that were a darker tinge of red flowed down and attacked some overconfident knights who didn’t treat this whole oddity as dangerous.
To them, even if the mosquitoes were dangerous to mortals, that might not be the case for the Transcendent beings like them.
That was their biggest mistake.

Darkness took over the district of Rudrain, and with that darkness came the aura of a Legendary being that tried to fight off a plague of mosquitoes, but not much happened after the initial pause.
"Adapt." Came a voice from the void which slowly solidified into an armless figure of Dearma who smiled, overlooking the carnage taking place in the city at this very moment.
A carnage that was a bit too targeted as unlike his expectations, the mosquitoes mostly targeted people on the path of transcendence, which meant the Knights.
It’s not even been thirty seconds since the mosquitoes exposed themselves when the first victims appeared.
"AARRGH!" Were the cries that echoed on the streets of the Southern District. Among them, all the voices belonged to the Apprentice Knights at first.
"This one is a bit odd." With a certain focus of his mind, Dearma found a bunch of these victims whose boluses were growing and exploding into the flower of flesh and blood, from which even more mosquitoes were born, and this time, their color a hint darker than the ones that bit them.
"Adaptation, evolution, what a wonderful talent of this fella." Not doing his job to protect the people, Dearma on the other hand enjoyed the carnage the rate at which these mosquitoes were spreading, and the little evolution they were creating in the area.
"So wonderful." He had seen these special mosquitoes before, he had been waiting for what they intended to do and they differed from the normal ones and he got the answer soon enough. ’But I should also give it a try once again.’
Dearma sighed for a bit, before using his domain to encapsulate the portion of the southern district and then imposing his will on all beings, causing countless mosquitoes to fall from the ground. But this suppression also caused most of the panicked mortals to lose consciousness, which can be considered good or bad depending on the person. But Dearma never cared for their safety, he just sighed in disappointment as this swarm couldn’t handle his Domain.
"Guess I expected too much from these things." It’s been a minute since the arrival of the mosquito swarm and around 10 were already dead, with some whose bodies had bloated and exploded into flowers.
This was it, or so Dearma thought.
Because when he strengthened his focus on the mosquitoes. Although the majority had died, a bunch of them had survived and looking for new victims. "Ho... Trying to run away?" At the minute and 10-second mark, he focused his attention on the special mosquitoes that were able to ignore his domain attack. But before he could do a thing.
One of the dead bodies suddenly made a twitch and then rose from the ground like an undead.
A body with meat flowers all around it, scaring some of the Knights who had managed to stay awake as well as safe from the bites of mosquitoes.
"What is going on?" One of the Apprentices thought, but the only answer he got in return was a reprimand from his superior, who fired a bunch of shots toward a man who was once their comrade in arms. Blasting him to smithereens.
But what they thought didn’t happen. The bullets suddenly hit the wall behind the undead flower monster, which had disappeared at some point. Consuming the Knights.
That was until one of them was grabbed out of nowhere, and before he could react, tentacles rose from the blood flowers that were over the dead bodies of their companions and entered the mouth and eyes of another Knight.
"Kent." Panicked, they attacked. But all they shot at was their very friend named Kent, who fell to the ground after twitching for a bit. "Wha... what is going on?" The mind of the Knights turned clouded. Their eyes were bloodshot as they looked around in fear. Wondering just what kind of monster were they dealing with.
No, they knew what kind of monster it was. "Eldrich... everyone run as fast as you can." There is no way to fight what one can’t understand, and that’s what happened to the Knights at this point.
They tried to run away, but what they failed to notice was that another of the ten bodies was missing. Followed by cries and the birth of a few more mosquitoes.
*****
"Domain, that is the weakness." At the two-minute mark, he saw the sudden transformation of the monsters and their hunt for the flesh.
What kind of power it was, he didn’t understand it at all.
Earlier enough, he had thought that the enemy was one of the Bloodcrow Branch. But he never in a million years believes that any of those monsters are capable of such monstrosity.
If not for the domain of his own, even he would have trouble keeping up with these weird monsters born out of the Knight’s death and that mosquito bite.
"Where are you... such power can’t be used from far away. You should be here, in the sewers perhaps?" His interest had awakened. These mosquitoes he had been killing one by one were too much for him, it’s better to go for the source of these mosquitoes directly.
So at the third-minute mark, he went through the whole sewers again but found nothing besides a few dead bodies that had also disappeared at one point. But there were little things that could be hidden from his domain.
When the Knights of the Church as well as Noble families came to action in order to stabilize the situation at the three minute and 12 seconds mark. Dearma’s bodies returned to void, as he scanned the sewers again, finding the disappeared bodies exerting a similar kind of strength as the corpses above.
Invisible to the mortal’s eyes, but to his domain.
The fun part about it all, there were only thirty-six bodies that he found, while during his earlier scan, there were around thirty-seven.
"Found him." He spoke, intending to follow up on the trace he just noticed. But before he could do a thing. At the four-minute mark, a hand came from the very void he had been hiding in and gently placed its arm on Dearma’s shoulder. "Mister, are you looking for me?"
******
"How does a curse grow stronger?"
"It feeds on the beliefs and fear of its victims, the greater the fear it could exert, the faster it will grow."
"I understand."
Since the olden days, even if the Curse Wielders were the progenitor of all transcendent pathways. It didn’t mean the path itself was good. There were many restrictions and the sacrifice required for a Curse Wielder to grow strong was too much for most organizations to handle.
So they had slowly become extinct, and unless one speaks of criminals, there are virtually no high-ranked curse wielders in the world anymore.
It’s better to be a mystic or an exorcist if one wants to deal with curses than a Curse Wielder themselves.
"When you go out, find a small island filled with ignorance, their fear will give you strength, it will make it easier for you to grow stronger on the path of Curse, and when your curses elevate, so will be your blood, which might in awaken more powers in those eyes of yours."
Rosso’s body was a mixture of different paths forced together which are generally impossible due to the law of Exclusivity that exists between the transcendent energies, which had turned him into an anomaly of a monstrous kind.
