Chapter 49: 2.13.1 Insects

With Maisel’s arrival, the police also followed him soon after.

As for his operatives, they were there, hiding among the crowds as well as vicinity, sniffing for anyone suspicious as well as attempting to track their target, while Maisel took the center stage.

"Sir, who are you?" The police that came after hearing the sound of a blast, asked Maisel who was in his civilian clothes, but drove an army vehicle.

Giving away his identity to some extent.

But as it was, the Military can never act out of their jurisdiction and the law of the city was in the hands of the Police.

So taking over the case before the arrival of the police went to show, this blast might not be as normal as they had thought it to be.

Making it a better choice to learn it beforehand, whether this case was something they can handle.

"Marshall Maisel, the perpetrator of this blast, might be someone my group was looking for." He explained while showing his badge as well as distinction to the curious police.

"Sir!" At those words the police gave him a salute, before dropping after hearing "at ease" from him.

"I would like to request the Police for some help."

"The public here, I want to know their identity as well as their reason for being in the vicinity of this shop."

Ordering the police to do his bidding, Maisel walked across and looked at the aftermath of this blast, before turning to Remira who was looking at him for a while, before something clicked in her mind.

"Was it the Principal?"

The young man didn’t seem strange at first and if not for Adam’s words, she might have not found anything odd with his following actions.

But the moment she had any suspicions on this man, he showed his true color and exploded the whole shop, while running away in the midst of chaos he created. Not giving her a chance to even act.

Making her question who this man was and why he was here.

A question which was answered soon after Maisel was here.

And with the rancid smell of magic in the air, she was sure that this black magician might not be other than that "helpful" principal, who Maisel had been hunting for so long.

"I can’t say for sure, but I believe it was." Maisel’s Samadhi flames, which were personifications of spiritual purity, also detected the radiation of a black magician in the air. Making him almost sure that the one who caused this disaster was none other than Kairut.

But why would he be here and after Remira?

Was he following her?

If so, why expose him to her and run away before Maisel can come here?

His mind was confused, considering his lack of understanding of the situation, he can only ascertain that Kairut was only targeting Remira, and the shop just became a collateral.

"Master would kill me for this..." On the side, the stunned Adam was looking at the destroyed shop with fear in his eyes.

To which Remira can only show some pity on this completely unrelated man.

No, calling him unrelated would be wrong, this man was acting as Maxim’s eyes not so long ago and his injured hand is proof of all that.

Which begs the question, did Kairut come here for Adam?

Remira understood that she had nothing on her which might attract that old fella. Even if she did, then why would Kairut run away like a skunk, when his identity was exposed.

And it was not like someone of Kairut’s status and strength would stoop so low to follow others. No, Kairut had many resources to do that without even lifting his finger.

Meaning, the reason he acted on his own was because it was something only he can do.

And if the target was not her, then that can only mean.

"Adam, don’t worry. You can come with me for a while. Magister Maxim would talk to your teacher and compensate for any losses."

Remira said, causing the face of Adam to twist in fear while he cursed on the inside.

’This... this bastard Jester. He played his card.’

Even without him, the plan will go on. He was not the sole leader of the Blue lotus of Durum. There was another one who could easily take his place in case something happened to him.

Which in turn would cause him to lose the chance to get closer to his god when she finally descends on this world.

"No, no madam. I need to face my master now."

"You might be able to stop him from doing anything for now, but when you leave. He will surely punish me for my neglect."

"Remira, this young man... was that man after him?" Maisel on the side was also not deaf. He understood from this small exchange that it was not Remira that Kairut was after. The young man might be the reason why Kairut was here.

And when looking at that hand which seemed filled with "rot". He understood that this man might not just be a bystander to this case.

He seemed to know Remira’s identity clearly as well.

"I believe it is, if not for me being here. Who knows, we might have lost some lead." Remira explained to Maisel, before turning to Adam who had turned pale with regret. "And you should not worry, if you want. We can have you transferred to another city or even provide you with a job as well as training with potions."

"All you need to do is follow us silently."

Remira said, before Maisel chimed in. "I can get you a job at Military. Follow me"

Maisel was only interested in Kairut. And it would seem Kairut was interested in this young man. Making it obvious, that if he wished to catch this old dog. Adam’s help would be needed.

It was why he chose to give an offer, somewhat akin to Remira’s.

As for fighting for his ownership?

Maisel was not so childish, nor was Remira. Currently the two parties need to work together and face their enemies. Fighting over jurisdiction of a single individual would just cause cracks in their relationship and weaken both the parties.

Which is not something Maisel wants.

Which is why, instead of snatching him, which he would have usually done. He chose to be more amicable.

And Remira also understood this fact.

Not to mention, she didn’t want Adam to begin with, all she feels is responsibility over Adam and nothing more.

Even the reason why she was here was because of asking about the smell that she had smelled on that bizarre child she met.

Meaning the child had visited this shop and might have been a customer here.

Making it highly likely that Adam might have some info on this young child.

So instead of having a small verbal fight with Maisel and hence wasting time. She showed him a piece of paper on which there was a sketch of a young boy that Adam was highly familiar with.

’Soros.’ He thought, but he just looked at Remira with a confused expression. Asking who he was.

’He did say someone followed him... so it was this girl.’

The fact that Remira knows the existence of Soros and was actively searching for him, puts a dent in Blue Lotus’s plan.

There was also Maisel on the side, who looked at the sketch deeply, imprinting the face of the boy in his mind.

"Who... who is he?"

"You don’t remember?"

Adam shook his head. Confused over the fact that even if she had found Soros, how did she connect Adam to him so easily?

What was the connection here?

"Did no one of this age come to you to buy any potions?"

At those words, Adam knew that Remira might have misunderstood something and she should not know the whole picture. So he just shook his head and then pointed out the shop. "Even if I didn’t, we always kept the inventory register..."

But that was it, the shop was destroyed and so was the register.

Causing Remira to understand that this was a dead end.

’Is this why Kairut was here?... He is directly working with Blue Lotus?’

She wondered, but didn’t let leather thoughts get wild before informing Maisel about the reason for Adam’s damaged hand.

"They might come for him, just keep him safe."

With those words, she left.

"Young man, I see you are back... "

"And I would like to thank you for your information, there really are a lot less rats than before... I can probably spend my nights here till the cold goes away."

The old beggar spoke with a jolly smile, as he was setting up a small home of his own in the sewer.

But this time, Kairut was not in the mood for banter.

His plan failed spectacularly.

"Did something bad happen? Why make such a face?"

"Come now, I have some booze with me. Drink your sorrows away."

The old beggar beckoned him, but Kairut didn’t stop and left the eyes of the man without a word.

"Hmm, young man these days." The old beggar soon ignored the downed mood of Kaiut, as he drowned himself in the booze, before noticing a small cockroach crawl out of the sewer, toward him.

Which he easily killed with the back of his bottle.

But then, another insect rose from the sewer, then another and before long a whole swarm crawled out of the sewer, rushing toward the old man.
