The God of Jesters
Chapter 47 - 2.12.2 The young refugee.

Chapter 47: 2.12.2 The young refugee.

Hiding is never the right option, it just delays the inevitable and pushes you into passivity. Forcing one to just bid their time till their end.

But Kairut denied that fate for himself. He was neither a fool nor a tool of someone else. His goal had remained consistent since meeting the Jester that fateful day. Turning into his slave and following his order to boot was all done for one purpose only.

A chance to live longer.

No, with the information he had gleaned from Jester throughout the years, there were much better alternatives to the immortality that he so desired. All he needed to do was look and approach the right people.

Something Jester was not, but under the slave contract of Jester, he can’t move on his own. Any will that goes against that mind parasite would in turn harm his life. Lessening it even further.

Hence he was looking forward to an opportunity to be free and grasp what he was looking for all this time.

As for his identity as a principal of Lucin’s Abode?

His family?

Or his standing among the Mage Tower?

None of it mattered.

These things were mere illusions, chains that bound him from achieving his true potential.

And after living for so long, he had gradually come to understand that to truly achieve a legendary status, he had to give up his identity and his accomplishments. Treat them like fuel for his progress.

It was why, the moment he learned of Jester’s departure from the game. He made his move.

"Keep following him, if anyone among them seems suspicious, take your shot."

The seven figures were completely suspicious, but this is not the aspect that Maisel was speaking about.

Suspicious movements meant the target’s attempt to escape, which also meant that the target understood it was followed.

And that is something Maisel can’t afford.

He doesn’t mind if Kairut dies by the hands of others. But what he doesn’t want is him escaping.

Not to mention, this is not an assassination attempt. Not so early at least.

Maisel understood the problem at hand, Kairut’s identity made him too important in the city and the Mage tower would probably try their best to impeach Maisel after he killed Kairut.

Meaning, Kairut has some sort of immunity. An immunity that would exist as long as Maisel has no definite proof of Kairut’s involvement in his son’s death. Which is what he was looking for recently.

Waiting for Kairut to slip up and show some weakness.

Which he finally did after a long time of waiting.

As for whether these seven figures were truly Kairut?

Maisel was not so sure, but this is what he was looking to find.

So jumping into his car, he drove toward the center of the city, where the seven figures were found to be moving.

"Sir, their behavior seems erratic, it’s becoming harder to track them."

"Incapacitate those that are becoming harder to follow, we can’t lose sight of them."

With those words, a shot was heard from the other end of the communicator.

"Target is hit, we are approaching him."

"Explain the situation clearly. As for the rest, check if the other six has noticed the fall of their compatriot."

*****

The public was scurrying away hearing the gunshot. Screaming bloody murder with their sights toward a hiding place.

While the two operatives that were tracking the figure came to the 10 meters of the figure and stopped.

"We shot at his legs, why does it appear as if its dead?"

WIth the years of experience, the two soldiers took up their arms and ordered. "If you can hear it, these are anti magic bullets. Don’t think your magic shield can defend you."

A warning from the two operatives came, but the body remained still like a log.

No, it seemed that way before, but soon, the two noticed a small centipede crawl out of the pants of the figure.

"??"

Which prompted the two to shoot the figure at his limbs. Which caused a chain reaction on the body,as it started to contort and shiver in a bizarre fashion, before breaking off into countless insects that scurried away into the street, much to the horror of the two operatives.

Leaving only a piece of clothing behind.

"Sir, we have been duped, it was some sort of dummy made out of insects."

"Insects?"

"Yes sir!"

"Then this is our target, an Entonomancer. Meaning the true body is hiding among the other six."

"Did anyone notice any abnormality among others/"

"Not yet sir, I am still following, but the target is going around in circles."

At those words, Maisel finally had a revelation and spoke to his men.

"Eliminate all the targets!!"

Being in this stream of work for such a long time, Maisel had come across many curious methods that his targets have used to save their hide.

And this one can be considered one of the most nominal ones, not too rare but not so crazy as well.

Or at least, that’s what he had assumed.

"Its a dummy."

"Its a dummy."

"Its...

As he had assumed, all of them were diversions. Puppets made for the sole purpose of distraction.

But Maisel was not even affected by this loss. No, at least this meant that Kairut was moving and active in the city.

Hence the need to create such bodies as diversions.

"Team A, did you notice anyone else exiting the points of suspicion, yet?"

"No... No sir, we haven’t found anyone yet."

******

Kairut walked along the underground sewer network, with his mouth covered with a thin piece of cloth and a small illuminating ball floating beside him.

His pace was not as slow as before, now in a younger body that he so desired. He walked in calm fashion, ignoring the smell as well as the rats in the sewer.

Using the teleportation gates to escape?

No, he was not an amateur to use such a childish trick. With the advancement of mechanical technologies, it has become easier for certain people to keep an eye on things.

And Kairut was aware that all the seven hidden gates of Lucien’s Abode had been exposed to the underworld for a long while.

One should say, it was Kairut himself who was the first person to buy this information from the underworld, to learn how much others know about him.

Which taught him a lesson that nothing can be hidden forever and any further creations of these gates would obviously attract some attention, exposing its location once again.

Hence the reason Kairut went the old fashion way.

Just like his "Master", he too was walking along the sewers, trying to understand why his master loved the rats so much.

But that was for the later, currently he was looking at the map in his hand and then climbed the ladder, while his clothes aged up at a fast rate, giving the young Kairut a beggar-like appearance.

Then when he eventually opened the sewer cover and walked out, he found himself in a very familiar street.

"Gregory street."

"Hah, youngman. I see you were very amazed to survive those rabid rats down below."

On the side of the alleyway, another beggar laughed with a metal bowl in his hand which he used to beg for money from strangers. Appearing cordial and surprised over Kairut’s exit from the sewer.

"What rabbit rats?... I slept there for the whole night and I saw nothing." Lying was natural to him. Sitting at such a height and having discussions and negotiations, Kairut was smart and able to come up with a story right on the spot.

Which is why, at those words, the old man coughed a bit, before asking. "Really?"

"Yes, you can go down and check yourself."

"Cough...I will take up on your words. These nights have been getting too cold." The old beggar said, while wiping his nose.

To which, Kairut just showed some disgust and then moved away from the old man.

He needs to act natural and this was not so hard with his years of experience.

With his young appearance as well as malnourished and pale skin, Kairut looked like a refugee, which has recently flooded the Durum city due to wars.

He was one of the many forgettable faces that barely anyone would ever care about. A face that would be lost among the waves of people that had been recently frequenting the city.

Which is why he looked so natural while walking towards his destination unassumingly. And when he eventually reached the Vaisal’s Enchanted Shop.

With a feeble and shivering appearance, he opened the door to the shop after much thinking and entered it.

Though, unexpectedly. There was already someone in the shop beside him.

Someone Kairut was very familiar with.

’She is here?’

It was none other than Remira.

The same woman who was used as a tool by his master not too long ago.
