Chapter 448: 7.16.1 A familiar place.
A bit sad I was with what I had done. Killing is never easy. More so for children who I could have saved by just manipulating their memories.
But with limited time as well as options, I forgo such lousy attempts at saving such lost kids, their future was filled with misery anyway, so killing them was not wrong in my books.
Well, who am I kidding, it still felt a tad bit bad.
This life was never going to be easy, nor would this mission be as easy as one might think. "This disgusting city still remains the same."
The magic shield as well as the missiles that exploded on it had sent shivers down the spine of this city, barely anyone was out besides some soldiers who roamed the streets from time to time.
"Hah, so much potential for chaos at this moment." With my new body, the amount of carnage I can cause in this city is immense. But I can’t go wild so early, I need to make sure that stupid price is dead before doing anything.
’The fight happened in the institute, but being a prince he obviously won’t stay here.’
’Neither will he stay in the small military office in the city, it’s not as lavish.’
’Would it be a hospital? Definitely not, he is a Prince, he won’t go to a hospital.’
’Then a noble’s house perhaps? Yes, there is a high chance that might be the case.’
’But it won’t be a simple Noble, someone who follows him, someone who can protect him during such dangerous times.’
With a bit of brainstorming, I came to a simple conclusion, making the scope of the search much shorter.
However, there was an issue I noticed which was not present in the city half a decade ago. "My oh my, so many rat traps and entire formations?" I wonder what happened to chance such a change in the city.
But no need to worry, this itself is proof that whoever put such traps in their compound, had something to hide.
"Hmm. Fascinating." However it was not these new forbidden zones that attracted me, but something entirely else. "Who do we have here?" In a familiar place, I found a figure that appeared a bit odd to me.
From the eyes of the rat, I can see how sneaky this individual’s movements were. Not to mention that talent of hers. ’A false body creation?’
What bloodline it was, I can only imagine how useful it can be if used properly. Whatever the case was, this individual earned some interest in me, but my eyes didn’t remain on her. Instead, the rats followed the false body that she created, walking along the streets and coming across a small butcher’s shop. "Hmm?" A butcher’s shop that gave me a hint of closeness.
"Ah, a follower of mine?" For someone of my rank, although it was harder to detect the faith of an individual easily. But when a high density of them was present in a singular location, it was much easier for me to do such a thing.
Meaning only one thing. ’Ah, the rebels have infiltrated the city this deeply?’
I felt proud for a bit, followed by some curiosity over what this woman had planned.
"Everyone, I have good news." She said, taking out what appeared as a small piece of paper. "I have obtained the map to some of the precious facilities of the military..."
"Finally... this is what we all have been waiting for." Spoke a one-armed man, who was still covered in bandages.
"The time is good as well, the dirty forces of Cynark had been focused on Yethel, all we need to do is support the army of Yethel from our side and the chaos will probably bring down Cynark’s Hegemony in this war."
"I say to use this map to steal all their weapons and blow up the houses of some nobles." Ideas driven by emotions spread among the suicidal soldiers who had little left for them at home.
They were driven insane by their tragedies, by tortures, by the hunger brought forth by their status.
The only thing that remained in their mind was the death of their enemies.
’Now these are perfect fanatics.’ Though their belief in me was not that strong considering I was still new to this whole totem thing, it didn’t mean they were completely worthless. ’A perfect force that can be influenced right under my nose. But using them now is the same as sending them to their death.’
I need to warn them to not act at the moment. They might think the war is at its peak, but in truth, the war hasn’t even started properly.
The preemptive strike was the only time that most damage was done to Cynark’s side. And in truth, their military forces were not hit as hard as they might think.
Cynarks strength was their population, they never lacked people to die for their country. So even if these rebels can create a bit of distraction, that’s all their action would amount to, a temporary distraction.
It’s why I moved, ignoring the clone that the woman had created, I climbed over the familiar building and then knocked on the window.
"Huh?" Startled, I could see her putting her arm over her revolver before she appeared surprised to find a monkey on the window. "Where did you come from?" She wondered, looking at me with some curiosity before stealthily taking a knife off a table and then getting close to the window.
Her intentions are clear, she intends to kill me for some reason.
"I would have preferred if you used the gun," I said, startling her into falling back on that familiar bed.
"You... who are you?" She appeared scared. It would seem as if all life had left her face, it’s how pale with fright she had turned from simple words of mine. "Don’t fret, I am not here to harm you," I spoke, slowly opening the window and then crawling into the room.
But the woman didn’t seem to believe me, she suddenly lunged at me with her feeble figure, which I easily dodged. "If not for the aura you exuded, I wouldn’t have believed you were an Adept Knight," I said, looking at this Clumsy woman who hit her head on the wall before looking at me with fearful eyes.
"Don’t try anything stupid and listen." It would be hard to make someone in her situation trust me, though it’s not like I intended to expose my true identity to earn her trust, she wasn’t worth it. "I am here to assassinate the Prince of Cynark, I wonder if you can help me a bit." My words sounded absurd in her ears, anyone in her position would think as such.
Some fools might even think I was speaking such words to fool them into giving away their trust, "Don’t be a fool and answer if you can help me or not?’
I asked her who appeared mute for a second, before finally asking. "How do you know I can help." Her main question was, did I know who she was?
Well, truth be told, since entering the room, I had become aware of whom this woman was. "One of the rebels, are you not? Just help me and I can get rid of one of your enemies."
But there was no need to expose someone who was so intent on keeping her secret, nor would it change things much.
And after a bit of effort on my end, earning a bit of trust between us, she finally asked. "Which Prince are you going to kill?"
"Any would have sufficed, but I heard among my circles that one of the Prince was injured yesterday... And with war over our heads, I thought this was a good opportunity for me to act.
A reasonable excuse is needed when dealing with fools of her level. And that’s what I did, appearing as a revenge-driven killer who had been waiting in the underbelly of Durum for ages.
"A... are you from Dorian Street?"
"You can say I was from there, currently I am not employed by anyone... this is just a personal vendetta of mine."
"So girl, just tell me the location, where that bastard is hidden, and tomorrow, you will hear sweet news... how about it?"
"Well..." After much contemplation, the girl finally spoke some words. "Last I saw the prince, he was taken by the Mayor’s men."
"Oh, that old crone is daring to keep such a hot potato in his hand, does he not know?" I wondered before shaking my head.
The old mayor was a total fool who only got his seat due to his background. Lacking any real talent for managing a territory. If there was one thing that he was good at, it would be his people-pleasing talent.
"Thanks for the help lady," I say, before disappearing from her sight.
