Chapter 146: 3.05.2 Look forward to the future.
Was this luck just a mere coincidence? Considering he was targeted and his life was in danger, it might be his luck at play. A luck that has never been good to him.
With the car door as his shield, Salveraz shielded his body from the bullets which still ended up piercing the makeshift shield, but with their momentum falling down. His thick hide easily ignored the bullets.
"Where are you going?" With a smile, ignoring the bullets from the front, he rushed toward the assassin who wielded two blades and was trying to sneak in an attack on him. But being a Master Level Knight, detecting his attack was easy for him, with a swipe of the car door, which burst on impact sending splinters of metal and cushion flying, the assassins were stuck and crashed into the truck.
"One down." He thought before three shots in succession hit him, and with no cover of the car shield anymore, he was hit by two of the three bullets. However, he was able to use his inhuman instincts to save his head from the attacks. Causing two holes to appear on his arm.
’These bullets... they are sharper.’ Feeling how deep the bullets had breached his flesh, the threat of the sniper or snipers just increased in his head. With those thoughts a few more assassins jumped him, each carrying similar blades and all exuding an air of danger that finally put pressure on Salveraz.
"You bastards, so it was a group?" He didn’t know why he was targeted. From what he understood, this was a counter-movement by the victims. Those who disappeared might have people in their families who were not as simple as they looked on the surface. Probably came here after running away and wanting to start a new life, until the kidnappers messed with them.
Under such an assumption, Fahna had given him a name, a suggestion of how the perpetrator might have been. Making tracking them down much easier. But now, a total of three Snipers and four assassins?"
Three adept knights at that. Something was fishy at this point. It might not have been a retaliation by the family of the kidnapped victims, but something else, a counter group who probably hit him because he was the one handling the investigation.
However, too many thoughts would distract him from his survival. ’Escape’ He thought, fighting anymore would be suicidal, so surviving till the reinforcements came would be his goal.
Then began the bloody war on the streets with no winners.

The police arrived five minutes after the fight broke out, their sirens were in the queue for the two remaining assassins to pick up their out-of-commission companions who either seemed dead or close to death.
But Salveraz didn’t fare any better, when the police arrived with their equipment, all they found at the scene was a bullet-ridden giant bear, bleeding all over his body. "Took you along." His clothes were broken and he looked like a giant beast, scaring the officers for a bit, who were close to shooting him, if not for his words and calm demeanor.
Then when they learned who he was, they started to treat him much better and the medics on the scene came in a hurry. "Another attack?" He said.
"Yeah, it seems like the same group of humans attacked the Detective." The police talked among themselves, some of them turning their heads and looking at the hunched figure of Salveraz who was slowly pushing the bullets out of his body by contracting his muscles, while the medics helped him clean the wounds.
"Can’t you return to normal? The bandages would probably be undone if you return to normal later." One of the medics asked, but Salveraz shook his head. "I belong to the berserker bear tribe, once activated, I can’t control it until my blood calms down or has its fill of carnage. Meaning, it would take a few more days. So go ahead, doctor." Salveraz explained with some embarrassment.
But his words in turn horrified the doctor. The young dwarf that had just joined this profession had recalled the old tale of one of the most violent tribes among the dwarves, they were the warrior race who had the job of protecting the dwarves from the outer invasion of their mountains.
Aptly named the Guardians and comprised a total of Four families. Composed of the Mad Monkey, the Silent Sheep, the Terrible Tiger, and the last one being The Bastard Bears.
Childish names were given based on the aspect these tribes were famous for. And their tales had been told to dwarven for ages. So even if he was a grown-up, he still knew what the Bastard bears were and their Berserker rage.
"Ho, did that scare you?" Salveraz smiled with his bear-like face, before ensuring the medic that he was harmless. "I am nothing like my family, do you really think anyone so volatile can get a detective badge?"
After hearing those words and seeing that there were no emotional fluctuations on the face of the man, the medic finally took a sigh of relief and after apologizing to Salveraz, continued his work under Salveraz’s direction.
A knight on the level of Salveraz can heal on his own, but the medicine and potions do help accelerate the process by a long shot.
And considering this was the first attempt at his life, who knows if there are others. "Sir, the truck is here to bring you to the hospital." With his size, it would have been impossible to transport Salveraz through a normal hospital van, so only a truck would be big enough to fit him in. Hence the reason why the delay.
Though, this did save him some moments of misery that were coming to his face.
*****
A world without misery is no fun at all. And the innate desire to escape misery is what drives most people in this world.
One can even call misery a form of nothingness, a state of mind where everything feels boring to oneself. For example, living in poverty, being hungry all the time, being on the run, looking for a better future but failing, or something as simple as that sandwich that your brother ended up stealing from you. All of them cause misery.
However one should mistake misery for being in miserable circumstances. Some people deal with bad incidents differently depending on their life experiences.
Some forget it and look forward to the remaining life they have, some turn prone to rage and are easy to manipulate, while some turn to misery. They wallow in their own despair and their past over the mistakes they can never fix.
As for why I was talking about it?
"Miss, as you have expected, the Detective was attacked. " The butler to the Maisel family told Fahna, which caused a smile to appear on her face. "He probably survived?" She asked and he nodded. Because if the situation had turned terrible, the Butler would have intervened himself. But even he didn’t expect Salveraz to turn into a bear before the fight even began and remain at an advantage till the end of the battle.
"I bet he will start helping me for real."
Seeing her happily enjoying someone’s misery, the butler didn’t know how to continue. As he had another piece of news in his hand. One which was not expected, even by him. Something that he didn’t want others to ever experience.
But Salveraz was one such unlucky bastard. "Miss, there is another piece of news." He said, attracting the eyes of Fahna, who was already making up plans to turn Salveraz to her side.
Though the next words that the Butler spoke, wiped away any kind of emotion from Fahna’s face.
*****
In a book I read, they said that evil can never be created, but only corrupted.
A complete horseshit in my experience. Because in front of me was the creation of such evil.
"Two broke down?" The man in the lab coat asked, a human with a goatee on his face.
"Yes director, the organs couldn’t handle the impact and ruptured."
"From the surface, they don’t look that hurt... so the opponent probably used an immaterial attack to directly rupture the insides."
"We can’t cheap out on the internals anymore."
The professor had a headache seeing how his products couldn’t even put up a proper fight before being decommissioned. Yes, their enemy was too strong. But the least they had to do was put up a proper fight.
But what of it?
Now two of his old models were easily dealt with exploiting the weakness that even his newer ones have. Meaning, that his newer models don’t stand a chance at all. Making this whole blueprint complete waste.
It’s not like he can upgrade these creations. As once they are activated, there is no going back and only some material can be extracted with 98% of the materials going down the drain.
"This was not a failure, it was a success. At least we can understand where we are lacking at the moment."
"So don’t worry for the present, but dream of a better future."
"For the future."
"For the betterment of the future."
The old man said as he turned to look at the two bodies, his thoughts, something even I cannot fathom.
