Chapter 145: 3.05.5 Work got easier.

"It’s been weeks, and you still can’t find any records?"

"No sir, the files got lost while moving them to the main office. A copy will be sent to us in a few days."

"First it was the excuse of the file being lost, then when you find the files, the approval took days, and then this?" Salvarez shook his head in annoyance, before pushing aside the officer. "Detective please!" Begged the office worker, but Salveraz was not in the mood anymore, directly entering the office, he came across the bastard that was taking so much time.

"Is this how the Public Record Bureau functions? Wasting so much precious investigation time over something so simple."

"Detective, no need to be angry over it, I have tried to ask the record keepers about your very request multiple times, it’s odd for us to make so many mistakes." The officer overseeing the PRB sweated as he said this. "And I know how it looks, but believe me. I am doing my best."

"Then your best isn’t enough Officer. The longer it takes, the harder it would be to find our criminal, and who knows when they might strike us again." Salveraz had an annoyed look on his face. The incident has turned public and the people are asking for answers.

How can dwarfs of noble blood be brutally attacked on the streets of Bothal?

If even Knights like them are not safe, then how can they feel any sense of security?

And the longer it goes, the more problematic the whole case becomes. People were looking for answers, plausible ones that won’t be cut apart in court. Meaning, that the act of picking some small-time crooks and stamping them with this crime won’t work anymore. The victims were powerful and someone equally powerful or even stronger should be a perp.

And in this city, all of those people had some background. Unless they go and search in the Gutters.

But that was an even stupider choice, the reason Gutter had remained free of government jurisdiction was not because they hated it. During the city’s expansion, many have tried to integrate it into society by bringing order to that place. But the police patrols would go missing, there would be bombings in homes belonging to the officials pushing the gentrification. And constant accidents at factories, all led by the gangs that ruled the Gutters.

Their request?

It was to be left alone, as long as they were given freedom, they wouldn’t take any extreme actions. Which in the end made it become a kind of quarantine zone for all the problematic elements of the city.

So striking a hornet’s nest would be even foolish. ’Those fucking bastards.’ Salveraz can’t help but curse at his fate. This whole case was a giant minefield, one wrong step and he might as well end up dead.

He only recently understood why he was given this case. ’Just because I didn’t accept the money?’ At this point, he didn’t know what to do in truth.

After leaving the Public Records Bureau, he took a break to smoke. ’I just need to accept money and follow their words, that’s it.’ If he wishes to get their help on leaving this case, he has to become one of them.

They probably feared him as a narc, a rat even. They feared he would go out and rat their involvement with not-so-savory people. Which was understandable.

They followed the belief of "Either you are with us, or against us." Which is what was at play here. As currently most of the officers in the high post were aware of something shady going on but kept silent due to money and fear of repercussions.

This went to show that whoever behind these disappearances were, they were powerful people and highly likely to be in the top governmental position of this country.

Sitting back in his car, he looked up the full detailed report of the incident that came from forensics, how the two victims died during the fight. As for the third one, who he was aware of. There was no mention of him in the reports. But from his sources, he knew that the man was still in a coma and might never wake up from it.

However, besides a few signs of it being a professional assassin of the olden days that still used blades. There was nothing. The only lead was the sniper, though sadly, it would seem the world didn’t wish for him to discover that perpetrator.

"I should just take the money and get my hands on this case." He believes that Fahna will understand this. It wasn’t like she was interested in this whole incident, to begin with. As she claimed before, she was here for her personal vendetta. So what he does after has nothing to do with her.

The most he could do was put good words for her help and see her out of this city. This is the least he could do for the daughter of the man who once saved him.

However, all these thoughts came to a pause as at a certain intersection and truck came and rammed Salveraz’s vehicle on the side, totalling it at once.

Screams and cries sounded out, people were running around in fear. But Salveraz had an annoyed look on his face.

Bleeding in certain parts of his body, he didn’t mind the injury one bit. With a single kick, he broke the door of his car that had turned upside down and then cursed out loud. "Bastard..., if you are not dead, I am going to kill you."

Although he looked like a harmless detective with a beer belly. But Salveraz was a genuine Master level Knight. His blood was that of a bear and his fat physique grew in size as he crawled out of the wreckage.

And his choice was straight, as a bullet came and directly hit his head, though barely entering his skull, the thick hide that now covered his body absorbed the momentum of the bullet, dispersing it through his body.

"Assassination... huh?" The moment the truck hit him, he knew what was going on. Compared to his mercenary days, this small ambush was nothing, he had experienced worse. He has survived even harsher attacks.

As for how he knew it was an ambush?

This whole street is too narrow for a truck, and usually, they would be diverted by the traffic police. And besides, considering that the government offices were not too far from here, it meant that no big vehicles that were not government could come here. All of that is done for security.

But what was he seeing now?

’Who was it?’ Then another bullet hit him. Just like the victims from before. Though unlike before, he was a Master Knight. Someone way stronger than them.

Taking the cover of the fallen truck whose occupant seemed to be missing. Salveraz used his thick fingers to take out the bullet that tried to end him not too long ago. "Looks like the homemade ones like before?" He thought, but the moment he pressed the bullet, he noticed the quality in difference all at once.

These bullets were denser, and unlike the homemade ones from before, he actually struggled to crush them. ’Did the enemy get better equipment?’ He thought.

’If it’s the same enemy, then there should be two of them. The sniper in the range and the melee combatant in the middle.’ Salveraz’s mind was running full force at the moment.

All he needs to do is delay the enemies, that’s it.

No matter how corrupt the current police force is, they still won’t ignore the incident that happened in the middle of the street during the day. Not to mention, a Police station was not so far off from here, along with some military encampments responsible for the protection of Government Agencies.

"I know you are angry, but killing me does nothing." The sniper was dangerous. He can see it from the bullet. Enough hits and his head will crack open. Which he doesn’t wish to see. Not to mention, he had no ranged options at the moment. The gun that was in his jacket wouldn’t fit in his current hand. He needs something bigger, something heavier.

He wished for his old battle gear back.

Then, there was another shot, bringing Salveraz to reality, who then started to look around for the other enemy. And then, he suddenly jumped from the place, feeling a blade cutting apart the overgrown hair on his body.

A man just jumped him. Using the truck as the vantage point. And in perfect synergy, a bullet came and hit Salverarz on his back.

"It’s really you guys."

Although the man wore a mask and there was no sign of the sniper, he knew these were the perpetrators. "You die today, Dwarf!" The man said, pointing his finger at Salveraz, his voice filled with hate and disgust that was harder to hide though the mask.

But Salveraz, breaking the card door and deflecting the bullet with it, laughed. "Can’t believe I can get this lucky... Thanks for coming here. You won’t believe how easy my work just got."
