Chapter 144: 3.04.5 Another one like Jester

Moving in circles, following a bunch of nobodies for weeks on end, and feeling no progress. That had become Sheva’s life. Though compared to her, Max was worse.

After the last three of his targets came out innocent without any suspicion points about them, he started to act erratic and depressed. Although he would smile when he talked to her, it was his usual fake one. A professional one that tries to hide his emotions.

But Sheva didn’t point it out, they came together for a singular goal and there was not much going on between them. And even though Max bought her a gun as an apology, it was just that, a professional-level apology.

From his little actions and habits, Sheva had come to conclude that Max was just using her like she intended to do with Max. Though it was for this very reason, she understood that more would be needed to take on such a big work.

As none of them had any money to issue a contract to information agencies, nor the reach to call for others’ help. Both of them were in an alien city where the standing of humans was pretty low.

And if a bunch of untrained ones were to follow their targets, then they would easily stand out in the city of the Dwarves. Making it much harder for them to ask for help from their community or others who might share the same drive for revenge as they had.

Talent and ability are needed more than strength at the moment. And besides Max, Sheva didn’t know anyone among humans that would be on their level.

It was the beginning of the fourth week since Max had told her about the next targets and there was nothing much discovered by her at this moment in time.

Most of her targets were commoners, and those without much strength of their own, nor followed by security personnel who might be able to counter her.

And less security means lesser importance was given to her targets. Though this was to be expected, Max can’t afford for her to be caught by transcendent individuals, some of whom hold bizarre abilities that he can’t even predict.

So better safe than sorry, placing a mortal against an immortal is a stupid choice. And one should always strive to solve problems under the limits of their ability. A bit of rationality and knowing one’s limits goes a long way.

It’s the only way to survive longer in this world. A way of thinking that Sheva was used to, hence the reason why she didn’t tend to put up any resistance over her list. She was not stupid to take on dangerous tasks that might sabotage their whole mission.

’It might already be, they should be acting normal after we attacked those dwarves.’ She thought following a young dwarf that just left his college.

The chauffeur that came to pick up was a human male, with average height. Meaning much smaller than her.

However, it was not for this reason that her eyes went to that chauffeur. ’He moves a bit odd?’ She thought.

His hands jittered as he opened the door, while the man had no smile on his face. There was no emotion whatsoever. As for the young dwarf who carefully sat in the car, he too seemed somewhat disturbed by him, but he didn’t voice out his opinions and silently entered the car after greeting his friends goodbye.

’An oddity.’ The first one in her experience. No, the first of its kind for both of them. Even Max hasn’t found something as suspicious as this among his targets. While a kid from a side family had a driver so weird?

Something was wrong.

’Krotal Smeltver, thanks for the lead.’

Krotal was the son of the transportation manager of the Smeltver company. Born with a golden spoon in his mouth and being the only son, Krotal had his life set.

Even if he never reaches the same position as his father in the company, he will live a well-off life without worry as long as he follows the path his father had set up for him.

There was nothing special about him besides his inhuman talent to disappear from his family, where he went and what he did, no one actually knew. But the fact that he was a chronic runaway.

That’s why a chauffeur was waiting outside of his college to pick him up. It was to make sure he didn’t run away again.

Max’s list put him as a prime suspect number eight. And yes, there had been a total of seven people that Sheva had stalked till now, with Krotal being her eighth target. And high chance, he might just end up being her final one as well.

’Need to inform him.’ With those thoughts, she left the scene. With her feet, it was impossible to follow a car and besides, according to the rules, she had to inform Max as fast as possible if she found something suspicious.

’Though, he won’t be there at the moment.’ Just like her, he too would be out stalking his target, making her wonder if she could do something else in the meantime. ’His father, where is he?’

With those thoughts, she left the scene.

Krotal’s father was on Max’s list. So she can’t stalk him. But considering the speed at which Max was doing his job, it might take a while. ’A little look won’t hurt.’

With those thoughts, she left toward the Smeltvers office building.

*****

I am Krotal Smeltver, a man with many hopes and dreams, but my father for some reason keeps pushing me in a certain direction. A path that I don’t wish to walk.

I dream of one day climbing the mountains with my own hands, sailing across the ocean on a dingy boat, and exploring the curious cuisine of the world. There was so much I wanted to do, but my father kept saying the same things.

"Danger lurks everywhere on the outside. You live in riches so you don’t know..." The regular lectures that parents usually give and he had become bored of all of them.

But what I never told my father nor the stalkers he had sent after me is that I had seen the real world on my own multiple times. I have seen how empty life can be, people that live day by day to extend their misery.

A life so empty that almost feels hopeless.

Why stay doing the same thing again and again? Why bother working a job you hate, if you are going to die anyway?

All of these thoughts combined gave rise to my desires, I wished to see more of the world, and experience the misery and love the world has to give to me.

Something I might never experience if I keep living under my father.

It was for this reason, I had planned an escape route for myself. I wished to leave my family behind and go on a journey of wonder and see all the bizarre things this world can throw at me.

However, all plans came crashing since the new bodyguard. "Hey man, can you speak?" He asked, but the bodyguard only gave him one look toward him, before focusing on the road again. "You are a human right?" At such an obvious question, Krotal expected some kind of response, but the man just ignored him, while focusing on the road.

"You are so boring."

"Young man, do you want to have some fun?"

"What did you say?" Krotal asked the driver, thinking he had finally caused this weird man to speak. But the driver didn’t turn his head any longer, he didn’t wish to deal with this problem child anymore.

"Don’t act like that... didn’t you say something about fun?" He asked again but got no response from the driver, instead, the back of the driver’s head contorted into fine lips with clear teeth, as they moved and asked the same question again. "Fun, do you want something fun?"

Panicked, he backed off, while trying to open the car door, but it didn’t move. "Don’t panic, I am here with a great proposition for you."

"Help..., Help.. a demon!!" He cried and tried to break the glass of the car, but none noticed his panicked actions. All of them just smiled at him, an ugly smile as they passed by the moving car.

"You demon..." Seeing no other option, the young dwarf finally picked up his bag and threw it at my face, which just happened to be his driver’s skull. Causing the car to slide across the road and then coming in front of a truck.

"Sigh... let’s meet again tonight.’

With those last words, the car was hit by the truck and Krotal woke up from his sleep in panic.

"??" He looked around, the weird Driver was still there without any lips on the back of his head, while the outside looked normal, compared to before. ’Just a dream?’

He thought, slowly forgetting about the dream as it usually happens. Bar one thing that is.

"Who am I going to meet again?" He asked the driver, who didn’t even respond to the question.

But it did put a smile on my face.
