Chapter 134: 3.02.4 I wanna be a hero.
"You are weak, boy!" Those were the first words his master said to him. A weak man was kicked out of his family after they couldn’t afford to feed him anymore.
Which when compared to some other families was a lot better. At least, he was not killed and then sold to his neighbors for the body parts of their child, so as to be eaten during the drought.
He was a lot luckier in comparison, his family was kinder in comparison, they let him leave for the city where there were loads of refugees looking for food and dying on the streets.
But Max had somehow survived that time, he had noticed a man that never ate and always sat in the same place. Never getting up to do anything, while sticking to a tree.
This man was his master. And when he had tried asking the secret, the words he spoke were pure derision.
"I.. Am.. not."
"But you are, your body is too weak to accept the gift."
His master had said those words, but in the end, he had relented and shared his gift with the boy. A generational gift that rarely carries over by an offspring and one can only sire one disciple through their life.
And Max was one such disciple. "No matter how hard you try, you will never be a bear..." His master always used to say this. Looking down on him due to his strength.
But Max was natural at what he could do and that was to copy reptiles. Moving like a snake and hiding like a chameleon, was almost natural to him.
A nature that he used now.
With a single throw, the vials in his hand burst over the face of one of the three dwarfs at once, causing a sizzling sound to come out from their helmets.
"Shit.. who?" They asked in confusion, drinking in the poisonous fumes that rose from the liquid. But with their Knight physique, they were easily able to fight off the poison. But these vials were never for them to begin with.
The moment one of the men turned to the man who threw it at them, a volley of bullets rained down on his face. Each accurately hits the helmet, causing cracks to form on it.
Before the revolver was emptied out, the last bullet in the chamber directly hit the center of the dwarf’s eyebrow, causing the metal plate around it to crumble like rubble and then slowly penetrate the outer layer of skin, before being stopped by the hard skull of the Knight.
But this simple attack still put him in fear as he was thrown off his feet and cried in pain as blood started to pour on his face.
"It was brittle acid..." The leader of the dwarfs shouted, putting his hand up to defend his helmet. While they started their offense against the new enemy, who seemed too slippery and like a snake, dodging their attacks, but never attacking again.
"We will kill him first, then go after the sniper." The sniper used normal bullets, so he didn’t pose much threat to the dwarfs as long as their now weakened helmet was properly protected.
But this knight, they can feel he was similar to them. No, he was a bit weirder, his skin would change colors, and scales would grow out sometimes. Making it hard to pinpoint what kind of Knight he was.
And worst of all was the slime his body produced, making it almost impossible for them to hold him at all.
He was like a loach, a snake, and a fish all at once.
The only great thing was, his attacks hit like feathers. He was too weak for him to be considered a proper adept-level knight.
It was then that the man said, "What are you waiting for? Keep shooting."
’Shit’ the dwarf thought, as he hurriedly put his hand on the back of his head, though the one that got shot was his other companion and directly on the head at that. Though not dead, the back of his armor was not able to handle the impact of a sniper bullet, causing it to fall apart with blood flowing out of the dwarf’s head again.
"I.. I am fine." His companion said, while the other one, who was showered with bullets from the revolver, showed some fear in his heart.
"We have to go away, this is not a fight we can win." In a few minutes, the police will be here. And in a few more they might just be dead.
And yes, he believed it, if not for the lack of bullets in the revolver, he might already be dead. He just got lucky.
"I understand, we will run." Spoken in a heavy dwarvish tongue that rarely is used in this day and age. The group of tree dwarves made up their plan that Max couldn’t possibly understand, while the woman that had been hiding had no way of being able to hear it.
But for me, I knew it. "They plan to run, each in a different direction." An easy-to-see to see the outcome from the body movements of these people and with Max being an assassin, he was prone to noticing the body language that his targets were used to exude when death was close.
What Max can’t know is the direction and how they plan to run. I exposed it all to him, letting him do what he wished to with all that knowledge.
But to my surprise, hearing my answer, he jumped at the first dwarf he fired his bullets at almost giving up any defense, a punch came to the side and hit him in the shoulder, but like a slippery loach, the punch hit almost nothing, his shoulder was like boneless fish, causing the first punch to slip.
Then came the saber attack, which was aimed at his stomach. But then with a swooshing motion, the angle of the attack was changed, barely missing Max.
Then came another sound, directly at the face of the dwarf, causing a thin line of blood to cut open from one ear to the other.
But that’s it, it was a shallow attack and it might cause some bleeding, but it won’t be much of a problem with a Knight’s physique.
Or so the dwarf thought.
"Noaa." His face went numb, the physique of a Knight that he had protected him till now almost seemed useless in front of this simple attack.
Turning the standing dwarf into a wobbly figure who couldn’t maintain his position and then slowly broke out from the group.
"Run." The other two dwarfs said, ignoring their companion, who they considered was already far gone and they chose to run in different directions as they had discussed before.
Leaving their companion behind.
A companion, who was shot in the head from the dark even before Max could complete his work. Then it turned to the other one that ran and was trying to escape the sight of the sniper. "Focus on the other, I incapacitate him, I will end the other."
"Master, after I grow as strong as you. I will be a hero that helps others."
"World is not so simple .....cimo. It’s complicated, the perceived evil is not always bad. But if you still plan to carry on this dream of yours. Then never fight in the light, you are too weak for that."
"There is no shame in darkness, it’s where I was born and you will find yourself in the coming future."
"So enjoy it, enjoy the hunt for the corrupt ’Perceived evil’. Let them know what true fear is."
These were his master’s words to the young Max, beautiful words that Max couldn’t even follow due to the need for the path he chose at the end. He was a killer for hire, done in a bid to earn enough money for a good life for his family.
Now, when his family was gone, he was finally doing something. Something they can be proud of.
Something his family can be proud of.
But they were no more, and he was alone, he was alone to enjoy the hunt for the evil, the corrupt, and the heinous ones he had always wanted to kill.
His body was like a blur, which suddenly appeared in the back of the dwarf who had just turned around the corner and hence saved himself from the sniper.
That was it, that was the peak of his hope as a whisper came in his ear. "Are you guys skinning humans?"
A whisper filled the dwarf with fear for almost no reason. No, there was a reason.
Max has just pointed out the details of their operation, causing him to be fearful of their enemy.
And that fear was all Max wanted, that expression was all the answer he needed to finally let go of his hands.
"Say hi to all those that you killed in hell." Then, before the dwarf could turn and defend the back of his head which was exposed due to the sniper, a transparent blade slowly slid into the back of his head, turning him immobile in an instant.
"A clean death is too much of a mercy on you."
"Hoho, I enjoyed this one. But I don’t want to ruin your enjoyment, but one of the targets is running away." I said in a worried voice, but the sounds of bullets were an assurance that the dwarf was still in the sight of the sniper, meaning he was in a close distance.
But what Max said to me in return was something absurd. "Two names, I want two names for this time’s kill."
"You will get no names if the main target escapes."
