Chapter 89: Many Gifts

Chapter 89: Many Gifts

Xu Feng, a modern man who often watched period and wealthy CEO dramas with his mother and had a love for online novels, was no stranger to the trope of the thieving steward or butler.

The actions of Steward Wu, while involving a significant sum of money, didn’t surprise him too much. He understood how a greedy person like Steward Wu could take such risks when an easy target (Xu Feng) was placed in front of them.

If Xu Feng had some kind of backing, Steward Wu might have held back a bit.

In his eyes, the more disgusting ones were Auntie Lan and Lifen. Their pitiful pleas and their involvement in Steward Wu’s scheme repulsed him. These women had no familial ties to Si, San, or Erlang, yet they were the only adults the children had ever known.

These orphans had been sent to work at the countryside estate, and their lives were dominated by adults who acted like monsters. It was a wonder that the children had managed to survive the harsh winters of the north. But then again, people from ancient times were known for their resilience and toughness.

Villagers lived in poverty every day; this was no longer the 21st century.

*SIGH

Xu Feng took a deep breath. The sight of the women pleading and the missing dowry didn’t evoke much empathy within him.

When it came to Steward Wu, he had no intention of prying. Xuan Jian purposefully allowed him to see the women, but Steward Wu was not part of the equation. Whether he had faced a severe beating or something even worse, Xu Feng didn’t have any sympathy for him.

Xu Feng couldn’t help but recognize that the women and Steward Wu were getting off lightly. In this world, where a servant’s life was entirely at the mercy of their master, and where individuals could willingly bind themselves with life-long contracts, the fate of servants often hung by a thread.

What happened to them was simply not his concern. In an odd way, this realization made him realize he had the makings of a mob wife.

Xu Feng turned his gaze towards the two men, a sense of gratitude and disbelief washing over him. He didn’t understand why he deserved these generous gifts. They were entirely uncalled for, but they spoke volumes about the men who had given them.

"Steward Wu..." Xu Feng began, but the room’s atmosphere suddenly shifted. Xuan Yang’s brows furrowed, and Xuan Jian tensed, interrupting before he could finish.

"He’s still alive, and he wasn’t harmed too severely," Xuan Jian explained, "but he can’t go unpunished for his disrespectful actions..."

Xu Feng’s laughter surprised the two defensive men, but he couldn’t help but find their concern amusing. He laughed deeply, from the bottom of his belly, and wondered what he had done to make them believe he was such a delicate flower.

After the laughter subsided, Xu Feng gazed at Xuan Jian with a grin on his face. The nickname "iceberg" no longer seemed fitting for the man, as he was proving to be far warmer and sweeter than his initial impression suggested.

While Xuan Jian’s face still retained its icy charm, it often held a softer, more welcoming expression. His grey eyes seemed to have a hint of a sparkle, reflecting the genuine warmth within him.

Xuan Jian watched Xu Feng with gentle and intense eyes. Xu Feng, displaying an unexpected speed that contradicted his usual unhurried steps, moved into the taller man’s body.

Their eyes met, Xu Feng’s filled with gratitude and Xuan Jian’s with a bit of confusion. Xu Feng wrapped his hands around the much more muscular man, not focusing on the sensations against his fingers.

This was a nice chaste hug.

Xu Feng was already grateful for the educational materials, even the toys were useful, and now there was more. How big was Xuan Jian’s heart?

The effort Xuan Jian had put into reclaiming his stolen dowry rivaled the actual dowry itself. This kindness and warmth from a relative stranger left Xu Feng to consider the idea of becoming sworn brothers.

Overwhelmed with emotions, Xu Feng couldn’t contain the tears that welled up in his eyes. He quickly wiped them away, determined not to let them fall.

With steady steps, he approached the slightly shocked young master, Xuan Yang.

Hugging Xuan Yang tightly, Xu Feng felt the warmth at the core of the young master’s icy exterior. Xuan Yang had used his influence and official means to reclaim the carriage, and this wasn’t the first kindness he had shown Xu Feng.

Xu Feng marveled at how this couple seemed to be warm-hearted despite their cold exteriors. One using brute force and the other status to bully the bullies.

As he stood between Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian, Xu Feng couldn’t help but wonder what he had done to deserve such kindness from these strangers who had come into his life in such a bizarre and unexpected way.

"Thank you, I love both gifts." Xu Feng rethought his words, "I loved all the gifts."

Xu Feng had been gifted in more than one way. It was true the men were also in a beneficial relationship with him, but they didn’t need to go nearly as far as they had.

He suddenly wished he had something to offer Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian in return. A hug wasn’t enough. He would wish them an even happier relationship and give them plenty of opportunities to make up for the lost time they missed as a couple.

The silly grin on Xu Feng’s face wasn’t new to either man, but today it felt different. It carried a different weight. This time the ger wasn’t being a pervert or being playful. He was seriously touched.

The atmosphere was warm but also uncertain.

"Young master," came a call from one of Xuan Yang’s guards, breaking the mood, "The carriages are packed."

"Escort the Nanshan servants out," Xuan Yang answered still looking between the ginning ger and his lover, "we’ll join shortly."

No matter what the next few months and years brought, Xu Feng would remember the start of his "first marriage," and the kindness of his "first husband," and the "second husband."
