Chapter 88: Stolen Dowry

Chapter 88: Stolen Dowry

Xu Feng remained uncertain about the kind of the gift Xuan Jian had in store for him. He considered the possibility of receiving some new toys or maybe other forms of...adult entertainment.

He couldn’t help but acknowledge that he might be letting his more indulgent and playful side run wild. He was only a little bit of a pervert.

Just a tiny bit.

In truth, he hadn’t been expecting anything else from Xuan Jian. After all, the man had already been quite generous by sending over a substantial "educational" dowry gift. However, it appeared that Xuan Jian had something else in mind.

Xu Feng had a sense that the dowry he had received might not have been entirely complete. There had been signs that Steward Wu had siphoned off some of the more valuable items for himself, and it was no secret that Lady Xuan had been less than generous to begin with.

Yet, in the midst of all these uncertainties, Xuan Jian had somehow managed to put together a rich dowry gift for a country ger, making it even more substantial and educational than what Xu Feng had seen.

What remained unclear was the extent of Steward Wu and the older servants’ greed. Xu Feng couldn’t help but wonder what more might be hidden beneath the surface of their schemes and greed.

As Xu Feng dug into the smaller pile, he was met with a surprising discovery. The stack contained a significant amount of wealth, primarily comprised of at least a hundred taels of silver.

It became clear that this money had been collected by Auntie Lan and Lifen, who had been assigned by Steward Wu to ensure that Xu Feng remained in check. They were to keep the ugly village ger in check.

As they begged for mercy Xu Feng saw through their tearful pleas. He was not one to be swayed by such emotional manipulation. Neither Xuan Yang nor Xuan Jian needed to persuade him on this.

After Xu Feng looked away from the women and back to his confiscated dowry, Xuan Jian took action. The two women were promptly escorted away by Xuan Yang’s guard, who had been dispatched to the servants’ quarters for this very purpose.

There was no room for soft-heartedness when it came to dealing with those who had conspired against him.

In addition to the sizable sum of silver, there were numerous items that hinted at the depth of the schemes of these two women. Among the stash, Xu Feng found cotton stuffing, new thick blankets, and even a few pieces of golden jewelry.

These items were swiped from the betrothal gifts and secretly accepted as bribes by the two women.

It was clear that a significant portion of these ill-gotten gains had already been put to use, as evidenced by the finer clothes they were now wearing and the healthy flush of their complexions.

In contrast, Si, San, and Erlang had been neglected, left without new clothes for the winter season.

Fortunately, Xu Feng had thought ahead, and he had made provisions not only for himself but also for the children.

As he continued to sift through the hidden stash, he couldn’t help but recognize that this was just the tip of the iceberg. The depth of Steward Wu’s hoard was staggering, filled with a substantial amount of gold jewelry and trinkets that a ger would typically appreciate.

Additionally, the collection included items that could have been of great benefit to Xu Feng, such as the four more luxurious fur coats he had been deprived of.

This revelation left him grappling with mixed emotions—both resentment for the deceitful actions of these individuals and a growing sense of empowerment knowing that he could finally reclaim what was rightfully his.

There were now a total of six coats, two of which were pure white. One was made of rabbit fur, and the other was crafted from the softness of fox fur. The four coats that Steward Wu had selfishly kept were nothing short of extraordinary.

Xu Feng marveled at the delicate craftsmanship, far superior to anything he had seen even in the modern era.

The pile of hidden treasures didn’t end there. It included leather gloves, makeup—that he wouldn’t be using, hairpieces and a selection of elegantly tailored clothing that was tasteful and less gaudy than what was originally left for him by the steward.

These were garments befitting a noble young mistress from a renowned household. It was evident that someone had taken great care in selecting these items, keeping Xu Feng’s complexion and height in mind.

The colors and fabrics seemed perfectly matched to Xu Feng’s features, with some pieces even made extra long to accommodate his height.

As he watched the collection of treasures in awe, Xu Feng couldn’t help but express his gratitude. "You chose all of these for me."

In response, Xuan Jian beamed with a wide grin. The disgust he felt having to be in the same space as the women seemed to wash away. "I selected most of them, and Xuan Yang has an eye for jewelry."

Xu Feng looked over the bridal gifts once again and even touched a few books on immortal bloodlines. Nothing profound, but these books would still be hard to come by and were great enlightenment tools for young immortal bloodline carriers in large and noble homes.

Touched by the thoughtful gifts, a tear streaked down Xu Feng’s face, which he quickly wiped away.

Xuan Jian offered an apology, regret evident in his words. "I’m sorry you received such a meager dowry."

Xuan Yang chimed in, his voice tinged with anger. "I didn’t expect Steward Wu to dare openly cheat my bride-to-be so boldly."

Stewards in large homes would often skim from the top, but that wasn’t what Steward Wu had done. He had taken a lion’s share and had no regard for his masters. It was as though he wanted to ride around on their heads.

Both Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian felt he had gotten off light. But they didn’t want to keep him in Nanshan estate just to torture him further.

Getting as much of the dowry as they could was thanks to Xuan Jian’s skills in martial arts, trailing the sneaky steward, and beating him black and blue until he confessed where he’d hidden the dowry.

Even now, Steward Wu was bed ridden in one of the servants’ rooms with the two women in not great condition. They hadn’t touched the women, but Xuan Jian had added ice lavender, a plant that grew in the fall time, where lamb and sheep were usually found in mountainous areas.

This was the real reason Xuan Jian had gone hunting the day before. The itching wouldn’t take effect until 24 hours after it touched their skin. It would be unbearable for the three thieves and would be an extra punishment they were forced to endure on their road to the capital.

Once they reached their destination, Lady Xuan would not be kind to them. For her own benefit, she would most likely use them to let off the steam she accumulated due to Xu Feng’s "willfulness."
