Chapter 553: Nanshan’s Madam

Chapter 553: Nanshan’s Madam

Children could only fight a nap for so long, and the same was true for Xu Feng. Napping was his weakness... also food... wine was a super weakness... okay back to the point. In Dongmen, napping was a luxury—sleeping in general even. But luckily he had Feng Yujie.

Now, when he was back home, and clearly exhausted, Xu Feng’s body would barely let him rest!

Even the breakfast that had taken longer than should have been normal, wasn’t pleasant... to him anyway.

Xu Si, Xu San, Lee Hua and Min were able to eat rather heartily. Lee Hua was the one who ate with the most restrains, but his enjoyment was hard to cover up. The ger was clearly relaxed even as their main topic was so annoying.

There would be times he grew somewhat fidgety, but he added to the conversation willingly, sharing pieces of information, the other three active participants didn’t know.

As for Xu Feng, he knew nothing and the food he had been looking forward to suddenly tasted bland in his mouth. Still, he ate, but, Le sigh, he couldn’t even die in peace for three months! Being the mistress of Nanshan Estate and the husband of Xuan Yang—and Xuan Jian—was so troublesome.

Eating was like a chore, but at least he was able to function as a robot. After Xu Feng mechanically shoveled food into his mouth until he was full, the others around him made everything else flow smoothly.

Xu Feng was almost completely unaware of the flow time as he listened and asked questions. He hadn’t truly registered when Xu Si and Xu San excused themselves to clear the table, wash dishes, and clean up the kitchen.

When there was a diaper related emergency, or the children needed a snack, it was Xu Si, Xu San, or Lee Hua who sprang into action.

To be fair to the all mighty mistress of Nanshan Estate—who was clearly very observant of his surroundings now that he felt comfortable... NOT—the three were working together to take this burden off of Xu Feng’s shoulders.

They couldn’t keep all the servants of Nanshan Estate in line, nor could they keep the main Xuan family from wreaking havoc when Xu Feng was gone. Caring for the young masters? Now that they could do!

The strange diapers were a bit of a learning curve, even the lid of the apple sauce seemed to be hard to maneuver at first, but their efforts weren’t wasted. It wasn’t until Xu Feng looked over and saw four heads lulling suspiciously on the futon, that he realized so much time had passed.

From morning to early noon. Even the sun had shifted—as it did, time stopped for no man... or dragon.

Lee Hua wanted to take her children back to her room for their noon nap. They’d had breakfast and one too many snacks prepared by Xu San during the long conversation.

The breakfast had effectively turned into a long brunch for the children, and putting them down for a nap now wasn’t the issue. They could always have a light meal when they woke up and then have dinner with the rest of the estate’s inhabitants.

Of course, Xu Feng agreed with the plan in terms of food, but he insisted that all four children sleep together.

This seemed to be the last thing keeping Xiao Momo awake. He was waiting to see if his dad or Xu Feng would win. When the little ger realized his Uncle Feng had handled things smoothly, he simply shut his eyes and tipped over on the futon with a small smile on his lips.

A true sleeping beauty. Or maybe more of a sleeping cutie?

...

Xu Feng was exhausted from his journey, but more so from all the mental gymnastics he’d just done. His always-overthinking brain was doing what it did best.

He lay in his bed, not feeling the comfort he had longed for, for so long. At the very least, watching the four sleeping faces in the middle of the large bed had some effect on him. His mood was lifted and he was healed watching the cuties.

Even with several pillow on the other side of the king sized bed, he was initially worried about the children’s safety. Luckily the bed was large.

Lee An slept at the farthest end from Xu Feng, followed by Lee Mo, then came Da Long and finally Xiao Long. All four looked like little cherubs in Xu Feng’s eyes—too cute for words, with little hands and feet that were pinchable and soft.

All of them also seemed to have good enough sleeping postures—at least today. There wasn’t too much stirring or any wayward arms and legs. At least one worry of Xu Feng’s could be laid to rest.

In his absence, the trouble inside Nanshan Estate had begun simply enough. It was mostly about the servants with too much time on their hands.

Xu Feng hadn’t overworked them, so they seemed to have the audacity to do everything but explicitly go against one of his few rules as soon as he was absent for some time...

Okay, that wasn’t true, it had nothing to do with being underworked or overworked, but many servants had been trying to climb into Xuan Jian, Xuan Yang, and even Xu Zeng’s beds in the last few weeks. Covertly of course.

Not just those three, there was also Xu Hu Zhe...

Lee Hua seemed to be shocked that this was an explicit rule Xu Feng was against. Wealthy households were pretty uniform in this matter—the masters of all ages and the serving men of any kind of standing always had several bed warmers.

Steward Wu, Lu, Gu—whatever his name was, was a good example of this.

Xu Feng smiled slightly as he remembered Lee Hua’s face as he apologized. The fact that Lee Hua seemed to go after Xu Zeng in this same manner would normally have been a red flag, but at the very least, he saw fit to own up to this to Xu Feng and apologize wholeheartedly.

Honesty AND accountability mattered.

The look on Min’s face as the midwife apologized was also something. One shouted Brother Min while the other called out Hua Hua... something smelt fishy.

Fishy or not, Xu Feng had bigger fish to fry. And since one had apologized and seemed unaware of his rule, he would put this behind them.

The servants of Nanshan Estate were not just riled up in chasing after the position of bed warmer, there were also ’two’ confirmed informants in their midst.

In Xuan Jian’s absence, Min was in charge of getting evidence of these two’s involvement with those outside their walls. During this time, the two informants became three...

Who were they informants for? Two for the Xuan family in the capital, and a third for a certain family that Xu Feng had a run-in with their young ger previously... this third variable was also the source of some of the rumors in the town...

Xu Feng couldn’t rest. He just got back, and now he needed to be the Mistress of Nanshan Estate once again.

When would Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang return? Xu Feng’s eyelids grew heavy as he finally dozed off. Min said they sent word only a day earlier. They would meet soon.

His lips quirked upward.

There was much to deal with, but his sleep might actually be sweet. This was just a useless thought though, Xu Feng himself didn’t know he would soon be startled from this sleep.
