Chapter 526: Another Secret

Xu Feng liked a good play. That had always been true and always would be. Yujie wanted to put on a show, and he was happy to oblige. The boys had put him in a good mood, and he was more than ready to act his heart out!

"We’ll have to sell any food you can grow after we rent a place long-term. It’s the only way we’ll be able to raise the children properly," Yujie went on as she casually repositioned herself outside the van.

Xu Feng, Mingjun, and Mingyue were all tucked away in the back of the van with the door mostly closed, hidden from prying eyes. Yujie continued fiddling with something in the passenger seat.

If Xu Feng didn’t know better, he wouldn’t have questioned the situation at all. But the strange play they were putting on had his instincts on high alert. Even with the rear van door shut, the conversation flowed smoothly, though their amateur performance would have been obvious to anyone paying attention.

Xu Feng’s relaxed demeanor was hard to ignore, so it was likely that sharks were circling, waiting for them to slip up. Xu Feng wasn’t naive enough to think the people lurking nearby had good intentions. They were walking banks that hadn’t been tapped yet, and the longer they lingered, the more vulnerable they appeared.

Whenever possible, Yujie asked loudly about housing and cheap food at the two markets they had visited. She left a clear trail, making sure anyone watching knew their little group of four was ready to become even more vulnerable sitting ducks in a new place, one where they had no connections.

"Yes, I wonder how long we can rent with the crystal cores I traded," Xu Feng grumbled, rolling his eyes for dramatic effect. "If only I had a better ability."

"It’s okay," Yujie chimed in, her voice filled with exaggerated optimism. "I’m useless as well, but we can survive together!"

The cringe in their conversation was almost unbearable, but it should be working. Xu Feng knew they had to appear weak, unprepared, and worth targeting.

"After we go to the base trading area, we’ll have to find out how much we need to pay for daily base food. The guard told me dehydrated bread is a good price," Yujie continued.

Xu Feng was supposed to respond, but his attention shifted. The two boys were busy again. Mingjun had pulled out a bracelet from a compartment in the van, and Mingyue was moving Yujie’s spoils toward his brother.

Within seconds, thanks to their teamwork, everything of value was placed into what Xu Feng recognized immediately as a space object.

Xu Feng’s face lit up in silent approval. ’Nice! Nice!’ He wanted one of those too.

He had his own space, of course, but a storage object was much less suspicious. Xuan Jian had one too, a convenient, almost common tool in higher planes.

While having an entire dimension like Xu Feng’s was rare, space objects like the bracelet were something even the moderately powerful could wield in some of the higher worlds. His space and the Xuan...Dong Yang’s space was one in a million or even a billion, things that you needed to be powerful to protect.

Xu Feng was "special™️" and had lived many lives. Perhaps in one of those lives, he and his brother had been powerful dragons, but honestly, he couldn’t remember that far back. Right now, he was just another survivor in a dangerous world with a particularly energetic ability and a lot of mismatched memories.

Having a space object wouldn’t solve all his problems, but it could still be useful. He watched with admiration as Mingjun pressed a button on the bracelet, and the items disappeared from view.

The two boys stared at Xu Feng as if waiting for him to do something equally impressive. Their bags were empty now, but they seemed excited by the possibility of more surprises.

Xu Feng smiled, amused by their enthusiasm. He decided to indulge them a little. He emptied out all his crystal nuclei in one motion, watching the boys’ eyes widen. He’d transferred most of his belongings into his personal space already, one bag at a time, but now he made it clear he had a sizable stash.

The boys exchanged a look, their excitement evident.

"I guess we’ll have to make the best of what we have," Yujie’s voice cut through the moment, continuing the play. "We’re running swelling our food supply, so we’ll need to make a living here on the base."

They had lingered long enough. Even Yujie figured that Xu Feng and the boys had completed their task by now.

"Let’s go to the base trading station," Yujie commanded gently, her tone leaving no room for argument.

The four of them moved slowly, locking up the van and leaving behind a "full" vehicle. As far as anyone watching was concerned, they had left their goods behind. But Xu Feng, Mingjun, and Mingyue knew better—the van was empty, but their belongings were safely stored away.

As they made their way from the parking garage toward the trading station, Xu Feng was brimming with excitement. He wanted to ask the boys where they had gotten the bracelet but thought better of it. Maybe he could get one in this world, or perhaps Dongzhou had something similar.

"Zee?" A woman’s voice suddenly called out, pulling Xu Feng out of his thoughts.

It was obvious by the strained gentleness of the woman’s voice but the annoyed look on her face as she jogged to keep up with them really solidified she had been trying to get Xu Feng’s—no, Xu Zeng’s—attention for a while.

Maybe the puzzle pieces he’d put together weren’t exactly right, but Xu Feng had a good picture of what this woman was after. She was after his little brother! And at least some of the blame for what happened to Xu Zeng was on her.

Xu Feng turned, noticing Yujie’s stiff shoulders, he needed to get rid of this woman. Who was the woman? It was Ling Ling, the woman he had narrowly avoided crossing paths with the day before.
