Chapter 525: Two Buns and a Play
"I want to finish trading quickly so we can find a room to rent for the night," Yujie said, her voice carrying. "I heard we can do long-term rental for houses closer to the center of the base with the nuclei we got. We’ll have somewhere safe to live even after this zombie tide!"
Xu Feng blinked in surprise, but when he saw her playful grin, he understood. ’She’s putting on a show.’
There was an audience nearby, lurking just out of sight. Yujie’s loud, exaggerated words were meant for them.
"Yes, where’s the last place we need to trade?" Xu Feng asked, playing along, though a hint of hesitation crept into his voice.
"We’ll go to the official base trading window and see what we can eat," Yujie replied, still overly loud. "We need to use our nuclei for a place to live! We didn’t come all this way to Aran Base just to struggle outside!"
Her boys continued into the van, leaving room for Xu Feng to enter seemingly unbothered by the over-the-top conversation, while Yujie kept up the act.
Xu Feng couldn’t help but admire her cleverness. This woman knew how to navigate dangerous situations and her children were so well behaved. It was a dream team.
Then again, for a family...no, any group of people to survive in troubled times, they needed to trust and match each other. This family had clearly been doing this over the last two years.
Xu Feng chuckled under his breath as he crawled into the van to help the boys with their tasks. Almost immediately, Mingjun shut the van door behind him, without turning on any lighting.
The space was dark and for a moment, Xu Feng almost thought he was about to be kidnapped by two half-grown shorties, but luckily his eyes adapted before his brain could.
Before he made any moves to help the two boys, he quickly decided to get rid of his own goods, depositing them into his space and only leaving seeds he had duplicated in his space in the newly vacated space.
With his unnecessary items completely removed from his bags, Xu Feng decided maybe a few jars of jam would be a good addition. It could be a trump card again. He was trading with fresh produce, one processed item would bring a bit of diversity, wouldn’t it?
He didn’t have much else to trade with at the moment, luckily food was a big commodity. Xu Feng also took the time to sprout more potatoes, he thought about leafy greens and added some lettuce and cabbage to the mix.
Anything else could be sprouted last minute.
They traded openly on the street, but now they would be trading directly with the base management. Hopefully, things wouldn’t be out in the open, and no one’s security would be in jeopardy.
In a few heartbeats, Xu Feng’s items were rearranged. Looking up, the former lady of Nanshan Estate was met with two boys staring at him hungrily once again.
With his play still in action, Xu Feng took the time to whisper to the little cute boys. "Are you hungry? Do you want some fruit?"
They weren’t in sight of anyone outside the van, only Yujie was visible from the passenger side of the vehicle as she rummaged around doing nothing in particular. She had already passed her bags to the back.
There wasn’t anything, in particular, to be weary of anyone seeing, he could offer the two helpers some sweets to sate their hunger.
He could germinate some fruit seeds for the boys. Although Yujie seemed more reliable than he could ever be in this environment, there were things he could do that a wind ability user couldn’t. Surely it had been a while since they had fresh fruit.
’Maybe they don’t even remember what it tastes like,’ Xu Feng mused. The fact they had piping hot food was already a rarity it seemed.
Mingjun tilted his head as if he were contemplating if he wanted this "fruit" or not, or if there was something else he would rather have.
Mingyue seemed to know exactly what he wanted, and it wasn’t fruit... well not exactly. He pointed to the backpack filled with mostly produce but also had two smaller jars of jam.
Xu Feng lifted a brow, thoughtful but amused. He nodded at Mingyue, not understanding the boy’s preference until he pulled out one of the jars of jam from Xu Feng’s backpack.
He should have known. Sweets, of course. Jam was probably a far more exciting treat than simple fruit.
Mingyue had bolted over to the bag like lightning and grabbed one of the jars of jam before pointing to the other one and then at his older twin brother.
Xu Feng couldn’t help but smile and nodded once again. These boys were something else.
Mingjun hesitated at first but finally took the second jar of jam, his face flushing with embarrassment. His younger brother, on the other hand, seemed utterly pleased with himself, showing no signs of shame.
Mingyue didn’t even seem to know what shame was, and that made Xu Feng happy. He was willing to indulge the boy—both of them, really. One until he became a bear child, and the other until he graduated into something even more pampered.
The jars were quite small, and more decorative than anything. These were packaged to be taste testers, and sold individually at a high price, while the larger jars in his space were meant for restaurants.
’Before I leave, I’ll offer them more jam to keep as a treat.’
Xu Feng’s smile softened as he watched Mingjun clutch the jar, still slightly flushed, while Mingyue beamed with triumph like he’d won a treasure. It warmed his heart to see them so content, reminding him of what his own children might be like.
Even as he fawned over the two boys, Xu Feng couldn’t ignore his play with their mother. He couldn’t help but add to the fake speech and add more affection and his real feelings.
"I hope the boys will be able to become even more willful in the future. They are such good boys." Xu Feng said aloud for all to hear.
Mingjun’s face flushed and a huge grin graced Mingyue’s face.
"Yes my buns are... our buns are the most deserving of being pampered little dim sums,"
Yujie laughed with too much pride to hide.
