Chapter 527: Ling Ling’s Man Pt.1

Ling Ling looked like a decent person, with a calm and almost innocent look, but a killer body. She was well-figured and relatively healthy for someone living in an apocalypse, especially someone without any abilities.

Even so, she wore shiny pink lipstick, and her hair was beautifully styled. Despite jogging after Xu Feng, she still looked put together. The standard of "put together" had changed since the world had fallen apart, but even so, she was clearly well taken care of.

Not as much as Yujie, but then again she was wearing a dark sweat suit under her cloak with a pair of running shoes, nothing glamorous, but very well equipped for the times.

Yujie seemed more practical in his eyes, but that might not be a good thing for women in these times. Xu Feng remembered that being thinner was the standard of beauty. Before the world went to hell, slimness was the ideal, but who knew if these things had shifted too. He didn’t.

Yujie wasn’t thin—she looked healthy, with naturally fuller cheeks. If thinness was still the standard of beauty, then perhaps Ling Ling was considered more ’pampered.’ Either way, the girl in her too-tight outfit—skin-hugging jeans and a green blouse—was eye-catching in Aran Base.

She didn’t seem to care about the looming zombie tide. Instead, she was here looking for ’Zee.’

"Zee! Is that really you?" Ling Ling stepped forward even more, her voice filled with disbelief, and something else Xu Feng couldn’t quite place.

’Zee?’ Xu Feng was confused for a moment. She wasn’t addressing him, was she? She was definitely looking for Xu Zeng, but even Zhang Wei and Li Hao could tell that he wasn’t Zeng and they were only trying to get rid of their loose ends.

Xu Feng wanted to pull away from Ling Ling, but he had a child—Mingjun—cradled in one arm and the other was now held tightly by the woman.

How could she even tell he might look like Xu Zeng from afar? He even had a cloak on. Ling Ling might have noticed his odd hair color, but she was still jumping to conclusions, ignoring the obvious details. Details like his companions and the fact that ’he’ was left for dead months ago.

She only seemed to have eyes for ’Zee.’

Before he could respond, another girl appeared beside Ling Ling, scowling. Several men lingered nearby, their expressions sharp and unfriendly. Whatever pleasant thoughts Xu Feng had been entertaining about the storage bracelet or trading were quickly dashed.

’This doesn’t look good,’ he thought, instinctively stepping closer to Yujie, who had stopped a few feet ahead of him.

’Is this some sort of setup?’ Xu Feng’s thoughts raced as he shifted Mingjun behind him, all while attempting to free his hand from Ling Ling’s grip.

"Xuan, what’s going on?" Yujie said calmly, though there was a sharp edge to her tone now. "Is there a problem?"

There was caution in her delivery. She used the name Xu Feng had given her, but she had clearly heard Ling Ling call him ’Zee.’ She also knew Xu Feng’s real name. Was ’Zee’ one of his fake names? Did he know this woman?

Xu Feng could tell that Yujie was reassessing the situation, deciding if this was something she wanted to get involved in. Even though her children were talented, and she could handle herself in this dangerous world, it didn’t mean she would invite trouble for a relative stranger like Xu Feng.

Xu Feng made up his mind.

Ling Ling’s eyes flickered between Xu Feng and Yujie, and something unreadable was in her gaze as she studied their faces, which were now visible under the cloak. She seemed to completely ignore the two boys as if they were beneath her notice.

"Zee? Do you know Zee? I’m looking for my brother Zee!" Xu Feng responded with as much acting skill as he could muster. He was pretty sure he knew where his brother was—almost 100 percent certain—and it wasn’t here. It wasn’t anywhere in this world.

Ling Ling froze for a moment, and her fingers slowly released their grip on Xu Feng’s arm. The other woman remained scowling, clearly angry but just as curious about the gossip she wasn’t aware of.

Both women were dressed too cleanly as if the apocalypse wasn’t happening, as if they had no clue about the suffering most people were enduring. And, perhaps they didn’t. Even within the base, they had a group of men following them, possibly protecting them.

Ling Ling clearly had some kind of backing, or she had sold herself to a very high bidder. Xu Feng couldn’t help but think back to the children he had seen earlier, positioned at strategic corners of the market. Pretty boys and girls offering themselves like goods for trade. These two women were much luckier than them.

Still, Ling Ling was here looking for his brother—possibly to make trouble. Maybe it had been a sincere relationship—

"Bro—brother-in-law!" Ling Ling called out, unsure at first, but then her confidence kicked in once again. Confidence filled her voice, almost impossible to deny.

Xu Feng’s lips twitched in response.

’Bold. Very bold.’

She likely hadn’t caught up with Zhang Wei or Li Hao yet. They were playing their own games in the background.

"Brother-in-law?" Xu Feng repeated in confusion, looking down at the boy in his arms. "My cousin," he emphasized the word cousin, changing it from the title of brother, "doesn’t have a wife in this life. He only left behind hungry mouths to feed."

Who were these hungry mouths? Xu Feng felt too ashamed to throw Yujie and her children under the bus, but he wasn’t going to let Ling Ling off easily.

If infidelity wasn’t a big deal in these times, Xu Feng didn’t care. But he wouldn’t let this woman cling to his brother. Whatever obsession she had with Xu Zeng needed to be curbed. If she was looking for a tree to climb, she couldn’t climb Xu Zeng.

He wasn’t even in this world anymore, and Xu Feng wasn’t about to let himself be her next target either. The way she was rubbing his wrist made his stomach turn. For such a thin woman, she had a disturbingly strong grip.
