Chapter 497: A Love as Old as Time
From the late-night meal to spending quality time under the stars with his plants in the small garden plot to the side of the residence, FengLi had an eventful evening showered by the light of the moons.
He wasn’t confined to human civilization in the least, he was more in-tuned with the earth and nature than many demon beast. The wood element was almost a part of his existence.
The night passed and the day came. He prepared a meal for his handsome prey using the offerings left for him the day before. FengLi felt like a demon beast god being worshipped by the loyal demon beast warrior.
It was a strange feeling, but the butterflies in his heart couldn’t be contained. This was happiness. He was beyond happy. If he could fly, he would fly.
In the ancient outdoor kitchen, FengLi felt a sense of tranquility wash over him as he prepared a simple yet nourishing and delicious meal. The familiar scents of herbs and spices filled the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of freshly harvested vegetables.
For FengLi, the kitchen was a second home—a sanctuary where he felt just as at peace as he did amidst the vibrant greenery of his garden.
With practiced hands, FengLi chopped vegetables with precision, and the rhythmic sound of the knife against the cutting board was a comforting melody. He smiled as he stirred a pot of soup simmering over a low flame, ensuring that it would be warm and comforting when Brother Jian returned.
The fall morning brought with it a slight chill, but FengLi welcomed the crisp air, knowing that the daylight would soon warm things up.
As he worked, FengLi’s mind drifted, lost in the simple pleasures of preparing a meal with love and care. Each ingredient held a story—a memory of sun-kissed fields and bountiful harvests. For FengLi, cooking was not just a task, but a form of expression—a way to nourish not only the body but also the soul.
With the soup bubbling gently on the stove, FengLi paused to admire his handiwork, a sense of satisfaction washing over him. In this humble outdoor kitchen, in the midst of the embrace of nature, FengLi found peace and contentment, his two homes within the shelter of a human dwelling.
Living near the Nanshan Mountain range made the weather chillier than most places in the Dongzhou continent, but FengLi liked it like this. Cold winters, but milder summers. His skin was thick enough to stay at a moderate temperature during the winter months. He could even sustain an entire garden even as snow fell on the earth.
He knew he should be stronger, something in his blood told him he was only at the edge of his potential, but that didn’t matter. His bait of "dual cultivation," was just that, bait. FengLi was never overly invested in chasing power and becoming stronger.
If he could protect himself and his kin, that was all the strength he needed. They only needed to make sure they were fast enough to outrun others and keep a few runes and a talisman or two to enable them to make a quick and untraceable escape.
He was much lazier than Brother Jian who was focused on becoming stronger every day. FengLi couldn’t understand how he could be considered part of the dragon family. He and his brother were two of a kind, lazy to a fault, and often too relaxed for their own good.
FengLi smiled as he entered the plain room. He knew he should have thoughts beyond the now. There were things he should be thinking of... like another life, destiny, the real present... The thoughts tried to invade his peace, but he was too stubborn.
Instead, thoughts of settling down on this continent and remaining a part of this lower realm were much more appealing. He could buy a piece of land a bit further out, but still close to human dwellings. He would only need to go into the mountains a few times to hunt and retrieve some pelts and maybe even some herbs to exchange for gold.
After securing his gold, a home would be easy to secure. Then he would decorate the home and especially his room so it wouldn’t be so sterile.
A garden with plants that bloomed year-round was a must. He also needed to have a nice kitchen so he could make many delicious meals for Brother Jian. He wouldn’t make the other stay with him but instead would make sure he knew his doors were always open to him.
Or maybe Brother Jian would decide to stay in this lower realm too and take him on some adventures from time to time. Maybe they would even adventure to higher planes as they grew in strength, but they would always come back here. This would be their den together.
The bubbly feelings were almost overwhelming. The sweetness was unrestrained and lulled FengLi into a sweet sleep. Even with the daylight shining its rays on the world, he closed his eyes to dream of even happier days.
.
.
.
"Feng Feng..." The whisper was sweet, but there was a hint of something else in the call. Was it nervousness? Why would Brother Jian be nervous? FengLi stirred from his rest, his hand shooting up as he stretched his spine like a bowstring.
"You’re more of a cat than any cat demon beast I’ve ever encountered." The laughter in Brother Jian’s voice had returned and with it that tender emotion and vulnerability had long disappeared.
FengLi wanted to know what could possibly be troubling the other, but on the other hand, he would rather all Brother Jian’s troubles disappear and fade away.
"A radiant cat beast who shines in both the day and the night. A beauty so stunning that the moons’ glow is sad when it cannot touch my skin and the sun’s rays are extra gentle against the nape of my neck to encourage me to frolic under it’s domain."
...
Brother Jian was clearly speechless, but FengLi could only smile in triumph. He was so witty! Words love him as well.
"Hahah," Brother Jian smiled down at the content cat lying in their bed. Yes, there were multiple rooms in this rented house, but they always shared a bed. "Even the sun and moon conspire to steal my mate."
With that the Dragonborn turned around, his neck flushed red as he made his way out of the room with a deceptively confident stride. FengLi froze for a moment. He could pretend he didn’t hear the pet name the other man had used on him, but could he really pretend he didn’t just hear that last statement?"
’Even the sun and moon conspire to steal my mate.’
....
"Even the sun and moon conspire to steal my mate!!!!!" He repeated it aloud this time. Should he confront the other man? When had they agreed to mating? He wasn’t an easy target!!! He was FengLi and many dragons, phoenixes, and other strong of bloodline wanted him to be their bed partner and mate!
They might not know him by name... but still, he was desired...
FengLi rolled his eyes as he sat up in bed, brushing the stray hairs from his face. He was the predator. He was the one hunting this prey. He needed to remain calm in front of Brother Jian, or he would ruin everything.
