Chapter 498: Beauty & the B...

Tripping over his own legs not once or twice, but three times in a row was enough to make FengLi pause. He took a deep breath in, then he let it out slowly. He needed to be calm. They had gotten this far already.

He was going to keep it together to make sure his prey didn’t escape!

Looking out the open window, FengLi tilted his head assessing the time. The sun had already risen to its highest point and looked like it would set sooner rather than later. It would likely set no later than two incense sticks of time.

It was perfect timing, they could share a meal together. And if Brother Jian was going into the mountains again tonight, FengLi would offer to go with him this time. He needed to strike while the iron was hot. He was no iron smith, but he was an excellent predator!

After getting himself together, his hair in place, and his clothing straightened to perfection, FengLi exited the room and headed for the kitchen where he felt Brother Jian’s smell the most concentrated.

No, it wasn’t the kitchen. The pots were clean, and the food he made was cleanly swallowed up. Everything was tidy, the way FengLi liked, but there were three new jars of very fine and expensive spirit wine placed in the corner of the room.

There were also new food items, but the wines seemed to signify something to FengLi... no, to Xu Feng, the wine was the start of something. The memory was just barely there, but he was unable to grasp the wisp of it.

FengLi continued on, Brother Jian wasn’t in the kitchen, he would pinpoint his location and acquire his target!

As soon as FengLi entered the reception room, two hands wrapped around his waist making him tense up for a moment before relaxing into the touch. This was his "dual cultivation" par... no this was his mate. They hadn’t talked about it, but they were already on track.

"The meal was delicious." Brother Jian whispered in his ear, his voice going more gruff with each passing second. This was how it often started, as soon as the distance was closed between them it was like their instincts took over.

It was likely a desire for power for Brother Jian, but for FengLi he felt like he was home in the other’s arms. Like they were meant for each other. Brother Jian was the Sun to his moon, the ying to his yang. He was incomplete without the other, but he would never admit that out loud... because he was the predator...

"I want to have another meal," He whispered as he nibbled FengLi’s ear, "But we’ll have company in a bit."

In only a few seconds, Brother Jian’s voice had that bit of hesitancy once again. He seemed to be unsure of his next steps, nervous about something.

FengLi wanted to stare the man down to his soul and understand what was causing him to be so nervous. Breaking free from the warm embrace, he did just that. Brother Jian had a confused look on his face but seemed to collect himself under FengLi’s scrutiny.

"What’s bothering you?" FengLi asked cautiously as if asking too aggressively would scare the other man off like a small animal easily spooked by loud noises.

"I don’t know. I feel like I’ve met him before, but I don’t know where I know him from." Brother Jian’s face was deep in thought but also showed a hint of pain. "I feel as though knowing him is good and right, but at the same time I feel like it’s the worst thing I could do."

FengLi wanted to know more. He also felt puzzled and confused. His instincts were pointing him in multiple directions at once. Something good was about to happen, but it would also bring about something bad.

The foreboding feeling was impossible to ignore, yet FengLi wanted to meet whoever would come over for dinner. Without any context at all, his heart was singing as if he would finally be whole again.

Looking up at the sky, the sun was still visible, hanging high and shining bright, but to the wayside, one could still see the moons. Both moons were almost spectral at this time of day, mere shadows of themselves. Still, all three—the two moons and one sun—shared the sky all the same.

He was like the moon. He was but one moon when there should be two. For the moon to be whole, there needed to be two, and with the two they eventually learned to share the night. While the moons ruled the night, a sun was needed to shine during the day.

The moons balanced each other out, but they also balanced out the sun. All three were important, all three played a role. And when they were all in harmony everything should work out for the best, but there were always those who interfered.

"Feng?"

"FengLi!"

It was only at the final call that FengLi came back to himself. He had just touched on something so profound, but still so fleeting.

"Are you alright? If you’re not up to cooking for a guest tonight we can take him out for supper, or I can go alone if you don’t want to entertain." Brother Jian seemed hesitant, knowing full well the strange feelings he got weren’t his alone.

They both seemed connected to this stranger in more ways than the obvious. Whatever good or bad that was coming would affect them both equally.

FengLi smiled up at the handsome Dragonborn. He took some time to appreciate the sharp lines of his face, and the concern etched into each feature. This was a splendid man. This was his splendid man.

"I’ll start cooking now." FengLi began moving toward the kitchen, he would allow fate to play out as it was meant to. His instincts had never lied to him, but he wouldn’t run and hide from the unknown. He paused before he got too far from the other man. "Thank you for my gift."

He smiled sweetly. The breakfast was a sweet gesture, and the small confession earlier made it even sweeter. If he had his way, FengLi would like to get to the bottom of things and define their relationship, but he would bide his time and do things right.

First, he would entertain their guest. When the guest was gone, he would corner the handsome dragon on their bed and play with him until he uttered only the words FengLi wanted to hear.

"...You haven’t gotten your present yet, our guest will bring your present."

At this, FengLi raised a brow curiously. What was his present then? Was it something Brother Jian had hunted? Was it something he traded with the guest? Had the other noticed his desire to settle down and build their own den?

FengLi’s mind was all over the place, trailing all potential possibilities. He could do this all day, but their guest was joining them for dinner, and he wanted to be a good host for the person bringing his gift!

"I’ll get started on dinner!" He took another step before teasing, "It better be a good gift for the meal I’m going to make tonight!"
