Chapter 431: We Ride at Dawn

Jie understood the desire for security and stability, but he couldn’t condone the underhanded tactics and backstabbing that seemed to accompany them.

Certain human traits were interesting, but others were too much for him. While Xu Feng was strange, he thought about the collective not solely focusing on individual needs.

This was the difference between heard like demon beasts and solitary and majestic beasts like dragons who only care for their mates and little else.

Jie wondered who his young masters would take after in this respect.

Jie felt a sense of pride as he watched the four brothers he had met and trained in Dongzhou grow into adulthood.

In many ways, he had raised them as his own sons, instilling in them the values of loyalty, honor, and resilience.

As they prepared to settle into their roles within the estate, Jie couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction.

The passage of time was inevitable. They would leave the continent soon, as soon as the barrier weakened in the next five to seven years. It was only a blink of an eye.

If they missed their chance, they would be stuck on this continent for the next half millennium when the barrier would weaken once again.

Before Jie could go over to Min and Lee Hua to poke the hornet’s nest he heard a call from within the main house.

He didn’t want to enter the shura field, but he needed to heed his master’s call.

While Jian still slept in the building, he no longer slept in Xu Feng’s bedroom. He wouldn’t even spend time in that section of the home. But the voice was coming from that area.

This wasn’t a good sign.

In Xu Feng’s room, Jian stood near the large bed holding a small plant from the birthing room—the last room Xu Feng’s body was seen in.

Jie knew his master was taking another memento of his mate with him as he left the estate. He wasn’t sure why the master had taken his lover’s body into his space bag, but it wasn’t his place to judge the grieving dragon.

While there was only one item in his hands, Jie was sure the man had more things in his space bag than just the body.

His master was too attached to Xu Feng, he needed even more keepsakes even for a short to the capital and back.

More than the relics, seeing Jian in this state was painful for Jie. His master was much thinner than before, much colder. He was more impartial like a dragon should be, but somehow Jie felt like it was wrong.

Still, a dragon must be tempered. This was why they were adventuring.

Dragons weren’t like other demon beasts. Not in this lower world, or in any lower or higher world.

Dragons must always be the neutral party. They keep the balance between all the kingdoms, realms, and parties. This loss of a mate is hard, but Jie hopes it makes his master stronger in the end.

"Is the bed ready yet?" Jian asked flatly, his eyes taking in every corner of the room slowly as if stuck in a trance.

Jie had put in an order to the carpenter who made the original King sized bed. They wanted an exact replica. His master wanted to take this one into his space and keep another in its place.

"It is all in order. The bed and other items should be ready in a few forte nights. Even the wood will be harvested from the same source."

Jian nodded and a small smile played on his lips. Jie was excited by this reaction. When they reached Jinghua, he would find some time to speak with Steward Wu to make sure no details were missed.

There was also the matter of the young lovers. "Ah..."

"Mi..." Jie didn’t know where to begin. It was awkward bringing this topic up. He couldn’t help but stutter.

"What is it?" Jian asked more patiently than he’d been in the last few days. He was clearly in a better mood.

"We should clarify... those ambiguous relationships..."

"Bai Mo and Xu Zeng?" Jian asked in confusion.

"No... They are together?" In his confusion, his gossip heart got the best of him, and Jie rid himself of his nervousness.

"Xu Hu Zhe?" Jian continued, wondering who Jie was referring to.

"Hu Zhe???"

"He seems to be preoccupied recently. He should be interested in one of the gers." Jian elaborated, his smile growing bigger as he judged Jie’s gossip heart.

Jie was confused. ’How can Xu Hu Zhe be seeing someone?’

Wasn’t the newest recruit coming with them when they left Nanshan? From what their master had explained just the day before, it would be him—Jie, Brother Bo, Master Jian, Master Yang, and Hu Zhe, and of course, their young masters.

Then there would also be Master Zeng... would Bai Mo come along if they were also in a relationship?

The group leaving Dongzhou was getting larger and larger.

"If he is with someone, he can choose to stay behind with Jia, Jun, Min, and Liu." Jian added nonchalantly, "It would be more people to protect those left behind in Nanshan and... Xu Feng’s resting place. We need to build a memorial shrine on the property."

"Lee Hua and Min?" Jian’s eyes widen for a moment before nodding. It was a strange connection, but maybe it would be good.

Min was always his own man, it was hard to make him change his ways.

"If they are both agreeable, we need to arrange for a wedding."There was nothing to question in Jian’s mind. "Are all the preparations for the trips ready?"

"Yes, everything is ready." Jie affirmed, "The carriage from Bai Mansion has been cleaned up and strengthened for their trip south."

It was better to take the strong carriage and it would distract those watching the mansion.

"We ride at dawn?"

They needed to make sure their watchers would see both groups leaving Nanshan. Both Jie and Jian knew Min and Liu would do their best.
